Guest guest
Help!!!! Rach has had real bad gas lately and it's really starting to be embarassing for her. We are eliminating the following things for a few days: olive oil, probiotic that she's on, butternut squash and the monster nut cookies in the BTVC book. There's a scent in my kitchen that smells like her gas, and I'm thinking it's the olive oil permeating the walls. I may be wrong. But I'm betting on the olive oil is causing this gas. I'm giving it 2 days. Is that enough time to see what is causing gas? Here's her basic food intake: chicken, beef, steak, pork chops, carrots, green beans, baked apples, ripe bananas, sometimes spinach, butternut squash, distilled water, monster cookie or pancakes made out of ground pecans with raw honey. She's on a multivitamin, probiotic, L-Glutamine, Paxil for anxiety, and an iodine pill. I've checked and all are legal. If you have any ideas what could be causing this really bad gas, PLEASE let me know. Also, I mentioned last week that the chiro was going to clear her for goat's milk so she could have the yogurt made out of it. Well, she hated the taste. and also, the clearing didn't stick so the chiro said not to eat it. So we're back to what do I do to get her to gain weight? Can you make the yogurt out of coconut milk? I doubt it, but thought I'd ask. Also, I tried making her ginger tea last night and that didn't work. I cut a piece off the root and boiled it but it didn't do anything. Just tasted like hot water. Any suggestions with that? Is there a absorbing enzyme that you guys recommend? She was on AbsorbAid but that was illegal. Thanks in advance for anyone out there responding to my email. Guest guest
I can only add something about the ginger tea. I slice it in thin pieces from the root itself or grate it. If I slice it: I put the sliced ginger in the mug, then use a mortar to punch it up a little bit, fill the mug to the top with water. Microwave on high until water is hot. You can leave the ginger in there or take it out, but if you leave it in and steep it a little longer, it should flavor the water. If I grate it, I use a fine grater and scoop it into a tea filter (for loose tea). Heat the water by microwave or tea kettle. When hot, pour into mug and plunge the tea filter with the ginger in it into the water to steep. Stir it around a bit and there you have your ginger tea! YOu can also put all the grated stuff in the mug and pour the water over it straining the ginger by using your teeth as you drink it, but some people don't like things floating in their tea. Good Luck!! I tried making her ginger tea last night and that didn't work. I cut a piece off the root and boiled it but it didn't do anything. Just tasted like hot water. > Any suggestions with that? Guest guest
What are the high carb foods that Rach is eating? Are they not ok to eat? Also, I hate to sound stupid but what is filtered water? - what you buy in jugs at the grocery store? I have no idea why she's on distilled other than that is what the nutritionist told me to have her drink after she found out that we just have always drank out of the tap. We live in Chicago area so it's Lake Michigan water but we have no filter or anything on our house water thing. We just drink from the tap and the nutritionist freaked out when I told her that. You have to realize that this is all new to me as far as major healthy eating. We eat like most Americans eat. But maybe not as bad. Plus we've eaten better since her celiac diagnosis in 06. Anyway, I had my husband smell the pork chops that I fried in olive oil and he did also think that they smelled like 's gas. - which sounds weird but it does show me that it's probably the olive oil. I pleaded with God last night to help Rach so she could go today on the youth group outing. And by last night, I really didn't notice her having gas. This morning she was crying about being sick of these foods and also that she was going to look like a freak taking her food with her while everyone else in youth group get to eat shakes and burgers. But I really didn't notice gas this morning with her either. So, she went and I'm praying that she has a blast. I pick her up in a few hours. Anyway, I see God working in little things lately for Rach and it's been pretty awesome. Just thought I'd share that. Guest guest
The high-carb foods I referred to are: carrots, butternut squash, bananas, monster cookies. They might all appear to be tolerated, but based on my own experiences (the only one of these I can tolerate is cooked carrots once a week) might still be having problems with these foods over several days. It might be helpful to have only one serving of these high-carb foods per day for a while, until she's seeing more improvements in her lower GI. I would start first cutting back on the monster cookies. That much fiber can be difficult to digest, especially when you're first starting SCD. Olive oil can also be tricky for some digestions. I can't handle anything but extra-virgin olive oil first cold-press. It's a lighter olive oil, both in appearance and taste. I'd use gas as a symptom of having either a problem food or a supplement. You may have to do some more testing, or cut back on having all these foods in one day, or even over several days. Might help to skip a day now and then. Might also help for to have probiotics every other day for a while, see if that helps any. I'm afraid we all have to go through lots of trial and error during the first year we're on SCD. It takes a bit to figure out which foods our digestions can cope with. And most of us have to stick to a small group of the permitted foods until we've gone through a year or two of healing and detoxing. Then we can start adding in more foods. I use a Brita filter pitcher to filter out any city or well water I drink. I get my pitchers and filters at Walmart, but you can find them in drug stores too. You can also find filters made by Brita and a few other companies that fit on sink faucets or in refrigerators that dispense water on the door. Or if necessary purchase a house- sized filter system, but that's expensive. I also get spring water in plastic jugs from the grocery stores since I go through a lot of water per day and the Brita filter pitcher can't keep up with the volume. I get the 3-gallon size plastic jug and recyle the plastic, of course. I have learned to get only spring water, as the other types of drinking water (reverse osmosis) upset my upper GI. I tried using distilled water a few times when making a batch of electrolyte drink. My primary doctor encouraged me to used distilled water when making electrolyte drinks because the minerals will bond with the water molecules, so my body can absorb the minerals better. Or so he said. Apparently distilled water bonds quickly with any minerals introduced. I've wondered if distilled water when drunk might not leach out or absorb minerals present in the upper GI, which might affect digestion in some way. Haven't looked further into how distilled water behaves in the digestive tract since my upper GI reacts badly to distilled water, either by itself or when used with my electrolyte drink. Hope had a great time on her outing. Kim M. SCD 5 years
