OT- finger nail strangeness

Hi all,

I don't know where else to ask this, so I thought I would try here in the hopes

that maybe

someone else has experienced it too. Just so you know, I have already

researched on the

web to see what my problem is, but none of the photos and descriptions match my

particular issue. This has been happening since August 2008 and it happens if I

take

vitamins or not, so I don't think that is a deficiency in any particular

vitamin.

When it begins, there is a darkened pink spot of color beneath my nail (so far,

both

pinkies at the same time once and 2 times at the same time on both ring

fingers), then

the the center of the spot goes paler but the outside of it is still the darker

shade. At this

point, the nail separates from the pink nail bed and creates a pocket like

opening. There

is no pain whatsoever. The 3 times it has happened so far, the pocket is at the

nail line,

where the nail leaves the bed, so that if I were cleaning my nails, I could

reach about 2 or

3 mm further down into the nail bed than my other fingers. The nail kind of

warps to the

side but there is no nail discoloration, no pain, no bleeding, no trauma

whatsoever. After a

couple of weeks it seals up again and looks normal for a short while and then

the cycle

begins again. The first time it happened was right before I miscarried a baby,

I thought

that it might be connected somehow, like a nutritional deficiency or hormonal

imbalance,

but the closest thing I can come up with is a thyroid issue. I spoke with my

endocrinologist about it and showed her my nails, she didn't say or do anything

but

consented to test my thyroid in a blood test so I could see it was normal. I

cannot seem

to pinpoint anything different in my diet or activity, so I am stumped. Has

anyone ever

had this happen?

Sorry for the off topic question, but really, after asking my doctor, you guys

are the only

people I know who might have some clue about the weird things our body does with

UC

and Crohn's.

Thanks,

Thanks for your reply Eileen. My nails are really strong and in good condition,

so this is

just a huge mystery to me. I have learned to really look at and listen to my

body and

notice when something isn't right and this worries me because I think my body is

trying to

tell me something, I just don't know what!! Selenium...I can look into that.

The thing is, I

have tests run all the time for various things from hormones to vitamins to

blood stuff, at

least every 8 weeks and everything " looks good " or is " normal " according to my

doctors.

Clearly something really isn't " normal " or I wouldn't have the problems I do.

Do I see a

relationship with my cycle? I could probably make a connection by saying it

seems to

become worse right before I begin to bleed, but since the deformation lasts

longer than a

month, I cannot say that with certainty. I will post at Healing Crow and see if

anyone over

there has experienced anything like this, until then, i will continue to check

for things on

my own and request a selenium test from my dr the next time I see one of them.

thanks!

Do you have copies of your test results? A doctor may tell you your

blood results look good, even though you may have a thing or two

that's a little high or a little low. For example, an old GI always

told me my blood results looked normal, even though my hemoglobin was

only 10. He considered that normal " for me " . I had to go around him by

telling my PCP that he thought I should have something done about it

(lies, lies), and then my PCP referred me to a hematologist for iron

infusions.

Couple that with the fact that our bodies needs don't always fall into

the " range " established by the medical community. For instance, a

normal range for ferritin is between 12 - 150 for females, and 12 -

300 for men. That's an incredibly wide range! I've read that many

people feel fatigued if their ferritin is under 20, even though it's

still in the normal range.
