If I buy farmer's apple cider in England, is it legal? As long as it's fermented juice, no added sugars, yes! (I would kill to have the range of ciders available in the UK!) I think Whitehead's is one which is legal. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Hi ,Are you asking about a specific post? There is apple cider vinegar. There has been discussion about it recently in relation to sore throats. There is hard cider....I believe you all call it cider. Marilyn mentioned this today as an alternative to beer. And there is what we call apple cider (which is non-alcoholic). Go to, http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/apple_juice_and_apple_cider.htmor http://tinyurl.com/ctjqxeand also see, http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/cider_alcoholic.htm or http://tinyurl.com/bms4zhfor an explanation of the difference between what we call cider and what you all call cider and how to tell if it is legal.Hope this helps.Kim H.husband, , CD 1999, SCD 2002To: BTVC-SCD Sent: Tuesday, January 27, 2009 7:32:02 PMSubject: cider! Many thanks. Great! What region is that? (since I want to visit the UK and Ireland again for historical research. Haven't been since 2002. Was going to go last year, and had cancer surgery instead. ) I really like the cider... but remember, it will still qualify as a fruit juice and may need to be limited for that reason. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Hi , I just wanted to say be careful about the alcoholic cider - even the English cider. My son has Crohn's, follows the SCD and lives in the States. He came over to the UK to visit us for Christmas and we did extensive research before he arrived, in order to find him a legal replacement for beer! Very surprisingly, it turns out that the majority of English ciders that you buy in the supermarkets (even the specialist ciders) have sugar added at the bottling stage. We emailed many of the manufacturers and they were great at getting back to us. Marilyn is right - Mr. Whiteheads is a legal English cider and we ended up buying from them, but they are a very small cider maker and their products are not readily available. When I have a bit more time I'll post a list of the ciders makers in the US and the UK who have responded to our queries and appear to be legal. I've been meaning to do this for a while but I need to go back through all the replies to my emails! Bear with me and I will do this soon. Guest guest
My mother is in Somerset in the UK and I have family in Dorset. It's the rougher cider that is made there. The finer cider is made in Kent. I'll not overdo it!! Guest guest
Thank you so much for the information on cider. I'll look out for Whiteheads, although it's not a name I know and when I buy cider from the farm I'll ask exactly how they make it. I have seen some farms advertising mead. I assume this is made from honey and therefore legal. Does anyone have information on this? I'll try asking at the farm in the summer. Mead, so long as it's made without added sugar, ie, honey, water, and wine-yeast. is legal. My niece and her husband made the mead that was served at their wedding reception, and it was delicious! — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund

If Marilyn you going to be in Somerset in May/June, I'll give you my phone number and we can visit some scrumpy farms! Ah, well... my research tends to take me some odd places. <g> Like the year I went to Canada (the Rockies) in February. Got some great airfares going OUT of New Orleans on Mardi Gras Day. As Harry was driving me to the airport that morning, I looked at him and said, " In heaven's name, what AM I doing? Canada? In FEBRUARY? Thanks to a new boss, I haven't worked in most of a year. So, no dollars for vacation. But I would love to go visiting scrumpy farms that are off the usual tourist route. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
