Hello ,

How does your rash looks like? is it red, bumpy and itches? is it mostly on

swollen joints or on your trunk? does it come and go?

I got a rash while on cefalexin; it went away when antibiotic was stopped.

Diane,

Do you think it could have been a yeast related rash? Were you taking good

probiotics daily to keep yeast in check?

Take care,

Ute

take a probiotic.

I lso had a bout with pneumonia. Went back to my family doc yesterday who put me

The answer is yes.  The z-pac is of short and decreasing duration and you need

that to get the inflammation down. I had to do the z-pac twice while I was on

the antibiotics.  It is not good to take those two medications together on a

long term basis, but for a week, you need the extra boost. The antibiotics

weaken the offending microorganisms, while the immune system kills and discards

them.  The medication in the z-pac reduces the inflammation so that the

antibiotic can do it's job.  Good luck to you.  Hope the rash goes away

soon.  Did the doctor give you any topical ointment to put on to stop the itch,

if there is one?  I use small amounts of hydrocortisone creme 1% when I get

itchy mosquito bites.  I live in the tropics and that helps.  Best to you,

Dolores & Mike

Hi Dolores,

I take 100 mg Minocin T/W/F morning..... 250 mg Zithramax Tu/Th morning.

Backtracking a bit, I was on only Minocin for a long time (much more often

though), then Dr. Brownstein switched to Doxy (I felt I had reached a

plateau) but that didn't work well for me, and even Flagyl mixed with the

minocin

and zith for a short while. Dr B tweaks and adjusts accordingly.

So, about 3 yrs ago he put me on this protocol (Min and Zith) and I've felt

better these last three yrs than I have since being diagnosed with RA 10

yrs ago.

Of course, I can't swear it's the protocol b/c....might be the combo of

supps I take or just the fact that it's taken a very LONG TIME for me to get

these results.

I know you do a great job in investigating and looking at all your options.

Hope this helps a little.

Dolores, you asked also about lab reports. My blookwork has been better and

better slowly over these last few years and normal on some numbers, still

elevated slightly on a few. Am continuing to work on this.

Hi Judy, Thank you for your prompt reply.  I have scleroderma and read that S/D

people do not herx as much as people with some of the other diseases of the

immune system.  In my case, I found this to be true.  It was easier for me to

distinguish a herx from the usual disease symptoms I had experienced which led

to the diagnosis of S/D.

the very last symptom I still have is inflammation of the G.I. tract and off

and on again diarrhea.  I just learned that my new HMO will cover OTC Lactaid,

Immodium, Prevacid, Benadryl, and Probiotics.  I take these last medications,

except the benadryl, as necessary for the indigestion problems.  Dairy

products are my worst enemy.  And homemade Limeade is my salvation.  I try to

keep my PH level at around 7.5. by using the saliva strips prior to

breakfast.  All other symptoms are gone and my ANA & RF is normal.

Everything else remains within normal limits. I was diagnosed in 2005.  So, it

took me about 4.5 years of using A/P (alterating various antibiotics) to get to

this point.  I started out bedridden and now I'm fully functional although a

bit slower due to the aging process.  I am 73.  I have aged at least 10 yrs in

the past 5 and it shows on my face.  This is due to the collagen I have lost.

My once round face looks drawn

and elongated.  R there any other S/D people with this same facial thing going

on.  Dolores

Thank you Judy for this information.  While I was on the Marshall, I took the

Zith at 1/8 th of the 250 dosage every 10th day as per the protocol.  It was a

mini dosage, but enough to bring the RF, which was the last lab test to go back

to normal.  I am no longer on anything but Mino 100mg MWF.  Onto another

question:  Is there anyone using a CPAP machine?  I have been sleeping with

one for a year and a half.  I recently moved to a remote Island in the

Caribbean off the coast of P.R. and no longer have a neurologist.  Do I have

to sleep with this machine for the rest of my life?  I developed sleep apnea

somewhere along the way and find this machine cumbersome while traveling and a

nuisance to scrub clean every night. I don't always have hot water and need to

boil some to clean it and for humidity.  Are there any other alternatives?

Hi Dolores,

Dr Mirkin puts his patients on 6 months of mino 100 mg twice a day.

after that he changes the protocol to mino on MWF, twice a day and adds 250 mg

zithro once a day on Tue and Thur.

you may want to go to his website and research:

Hi Judy, Thank you for your prompt reply. I have scleroderma and read

that S/D people do not herx as much as people with some of the other diseases

of the immune system. In my case, I found this to be true. It was easier

for me to distinguish a herx from the usual disease symptoms I had

experienced which led to the diagnosis of S/D.

the very last symptom I still have is inflammation of the G.I. tract and

off and on again diarrhea. I just learned that my new HMO will cover OTC

Lactaid, Immodium, Prevacid, Benadryl, and Probiotics. I take these last

medications, except the benadryl, as necessary for the indigestion problems.

Dairy products are my worst enemy. And homemade Limeade is my salvation.

I try to keep my PH level at around 7.5. by using the saliva strips prior

to breakfast. All other symptoms are gone and my ANA & RF is normal.

Everything else remains within normal limits. I was diagnosed in 2005. So, it

took me about 4.5 years of using A/P (alterating various antibiotics) to

get to this point. I started out bedridden and now I'm fully functional

although a bit slower due to the aging process. I am 73. I have aged at

least 10 yrs in the past 5 and it shows on my face. This is due to the

collagen I have lost. My once round face looks drawn

and elongated. R there any other S/D people with this same facial thing

going on. Dolores

Hello Delores. Long time no see. I hope you are eating all the Lechón and arroz

con pollo that you can hold. God, I love the food down there! My wife was

diagnosed with apnea and put on CPAP immediately before her lupus manifested

last April. I have always wondered if there was any correlation between the two.

She was also put on allergy shots (also a concern, but she has been freed from

the allergy problems) due to multitudes of sinus infections. Turns out she was

allergic to quite a few things here in the south and they were not bacterial

infections. Anyway, due to the lupus, polymyocitis and (we just found out about

in December) malabsorption syndrome (LGS), she has lost about 100 lbs. Now she

no longer snores without the CPAP and had not used it for about two months. Her

EENT doc says she should still use it and she has started recently, while trying

to see if it may improve her sleep habits. She was on sleeping pills for about 4

months with relatively small favorable results. Her EENT finally pulled her off

of them and made her start getting up when she could not sleep, read or watch TV

(or work on the computer, in her case) until she got tired and then go back to

bed. It " seems " to have gotten better but it is still a problem. But we are both

happier having her off of the meds. Other than that she is doing much better

being on the mino and zith plus the multitude of supplements and probiotics she

is on. She is still on the Imuran and Dr. Whitman (I think that is where we left

off before you left) also put her back on Plaquenil with the plan of weaning her

of the mino, Imuran and as low a dose as possible on the prednisone. We are

hoping to get her weight turned around and she has been stable for about two

months and feeling more of her old self ever since we saw Dr. Whitman and her

naturalist has been working on her LGS. The DO also found out that she had a

systemic yeast infection which she has just finished her treatment for. Lot's of

" STUFF " . All for now. Glad you are doing well on the isla.

Hi Judy. How much Mino and Zith did you take? How long was it before you

I went from Mino only to the Marshall Protocol where I added Clindamycin,

and zithro along with Mino and then for a while I took Bactrim and

substituted Doxy for Mino. I am back on straight mino now MWF-100mg/day. Just

started that recently and have not noticed any further changes. Dolores

Hi Rick,  so sorry to hear about the new diagnosis of lupus for your wife and

the polyomyositis. Dr. Whitman is a good doctor, but it will take time to

unravel all the symptoms.  Yes, I have had sleep problems since childhood.  I

sort of outgrew them in my middle years because I worked at a hospital (nursing)

and would come home so exhausted.  In those days, there was no computer and I

had kids to take care of so there was not leisure time and I would drop into bed

exhausted and sleep like a baby.  It wasn't until my retirement, that the old

bad sleep habits returned.  I didn't know I had sleep apnea till my husband

woke up and found me not breathing.  It scared him.  The overnight sleep lab

testing confirmed that I was definitely in danger of not waking up at all one of

these days.  I didn't connect the Scleroderma with the apnea.  But, I still

have awful sleeplessness.  It seems like just when I get comfortable, and ready

to doze off, my

body jerks me wide awake.  There are times when I go two or three days without

sleep.  Then there are days when all I want to do is sleep.  It is a horrible

situation.  I used to take ambien, but found out that I had no recollection

about mornings, so I stopped taking any drug and just try to sleep whenever I

can.  I hate and love that CPAP machine.  I hate that I have to use it and

yet, I am confident to fall asleep with it, knowing that I will wake up in the

morning.  My best to you and your wife.  It is freezing in N.Y., but I miss it

so much.  I wish I knew how to make lechon and arroz con pollo.  I was not

raised with my parents, so I never learned much about the Puerto Rican

culture.  I am learning now.  It is very different down here.  Everything is

slower and sometimes it gets to me.  I have to learn to calm down and get on

Island time.  Take care and good wishes to you and your wife.  And good luck

with the digestive problems.

I develop irritable bowel function if I don't watch what I eat also.  I find

simple food to be the easiest to digest.  No dairy, no white, no fried.

Bananas are good especially right off the tree.  Our best to you and family,

Dolores & mike
