Do you mean gastric band?

If so, it doesn't have the same quality of results as Kaiser's preferred

surgery--Roux-En-Y (we abbreviate it as RNY). And if a hospital/program

or MD doesn't usually do a procedure or is new to it, you don't want to

be in their first 25!

Kaiser in California, where many of us are, does the surgery and I would

think that the policy would have to apply nationwide. If it has been two

years, try again and see if they are doing it, and if they tell you that

they aren't, then tell them that you know that Kaiser does it in

California. Go to membership management and tell them your problem as

well. As for doing the after surgery diet, I couldn't recommend that

because post-ops have an issue with malabsorption of food that we don't

have. Instead you should do the pre-op diet that is just a basic 1200

calorie diet, or some people do the low carb diet as well. Hope this

helps. LaWanda At 05:14 AM 11/19/04, you wrote:

Hi . . . (eh, uh . . . how should I address you? "Hi, Frustrated in

GA" seems a bit odd.)

Anyway . . .

Welcome to the group. I think that you are our first Georgian. It

will be interesting to hear how things work with the Kaiser back

there. I hope that you find this group to be as helpful, informative

and supportive as I have found it to be. This is an amazing group of

folks.

Have you checked with your Kaiser recently? Gastric bypass surgery

seems to have gained a lot of acceptance in recent years - and, with

obesity now being officially considered a disease, it should be easier

to press Kaiser for an effective treatment (as opposed to the old

diet/exercise routine with its 95% failure rate).

About trying to do "the post op diet" without having WLS surgery -

well, there are several variations of post op diets that given to folks

for when their new tummies are healing from the surgery. These diets

are only meant to last for a very short time and following these

extremely restrictive diets for very long would almost surely result in

malnutrition. Once WLS patients progress past this newly post op

stage, we aren't really on a "diet." We eat small portions with

emphasis on protein. We are also monitored by our doctors and

nutritionists and with lab work to make sure that we are not getting

into trouble nutritionally. I would caution you against eating as

little as most post-ops do unless you are under a doctor's or

nutritionist's care and supervision. And, even with a doctor's

involvement, I'd be concerned about the regain that seems inevitable

with most dieting. Whatever changes to your eating patterns and

relationship with food that you make will need to life-long changes if

they are to result in long-term success. At least, that is my 2 cents

worth.

Please, do check out what Kaiser may be offering these days. If they

don't have a WLS exclusion specified, then it would seem that you have

a good shot at having them either perform the surgery or possibly even

pay to have it done elsewhere. Don't give up. It may take some

research and pushing, but don't give up.

All the best,

Kay
