Guest guest
I am a little more than 3 months post op, and I noticed something similar. But the farther we get out of surgery, the more we need. Not excessively more, but a little more...keep in mind for the first month you feel like garbage, and the second month you are too scared to eat...*G* I was told that in order to keep metabolism up, you need to eat. I found that I ws able, thank God, to find a swift balance between too much and too little. I rarely snack between meals, and I found that I was able to do this by cutting out refined carbs. Totally. I think in the three months out, I have eaten refined carbs twice...Point is, stick to the regimen, and you cannot help but lose! Good luck in your journey! If I eat until I am full at each meal, that usually holds me over to the next meal without any snacking, which of course is the goal. But I feel like I’m eating more than I should at meals…however, if I eat the portion that I think I should, then I feel like I’m starving within 2-3 hours after the meal. I drink tons of water (more than the required 64 oz on some days) – drinking more does not help to curb my appetite. What is the right thing to do at this stage – eat until I’m actually full or limit my portions to specified amounts? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks. - Lesa - __________________________________________________

Guest guest
Hi Lesa Some days I am so hungry when I have my meal tht I think that I will eat more, but still I am filled with my food. I have a regimen for lumch and dinner that I I always try to include my protein of course, some salad or a veggie, and some fruit.....and either a few crackers or a piece of potato or some toast. we went out for lunch yesterdat at the Lion and Compass (very accomodating place). And we did our usual "buddy ordering". He wanted an appetizer and I suggested the grilled ckn salad instead of the trad appetizer. too funny, the waiter thought she was bein sooooooo helpful and split it in 1/2 on two plates ....I had only planned to eat a few bites so I could have a few bites of my lunch. so i had to wait so she would not see me shoveling it all on his plate but one bite of ckin and 2 bites of cabbage. but I think she peeked cuz when she brought our dessert it was one plate and two spoons. (fresh berries YUM!). If you are loosing wt, then I think that you are prob not overdoing it....but if you think you are eating too much, talk to the nutritionist.... bee Lesa wrote: Bee yikes! I can eat like a cup of chopped lettuce with ¼ cup of tuna and a ¼ cup of cottage cheese on it! I think I’ve been eating about 1 to 1 ½ cups of food at lunch & dinner (I have a protein shake for breakfast). OK, not SOLID food (usually a cup is something leafy like lettuce, which is kind of airy, but certainly more than two leaves! I thought that seemed like a lot and compared to what you just described, it seems like too much!?!?!?!? You know, I’ve been slacking off on journaling my food intake – I think I’d better get back to doing that. Perhaps seeing it in print will help and will also give me a better idea of my daily calorie intake. Thanks for sharing where you’re at. - Lesa - -----Original Message-----From: bl z Sent: Thursday, November 18, 2004 9:03 AMTo: gastric-bypass-support-kaiser-patients Subject: Re: Re: How much to eat? i still eat my same protein but I now have more than 1/2 of a lettuce leaf for my salad...now I am up to about 2! and I can eat a bit less than 1/2 of a piece of fruit (very small one) also.... bee Diane Duenas wrote: At about 6 months out I was up to about 4 oz. Guest guest
Hi Lesa, At about the 6-month post-op mark, it seems like we can suddenly eat a whole lot more and that it takes that much more to fill us up. As Dr. Baggs explained it to me, it has a lot to do with the swelling in our pouches subsiding. I hadn't thought about the fact that there would, of course, be internal swelling from all the slicing and dicing, but it certainly makes sense. A lot folks evidently get a bit freaked out and start thinking that their pouches are stretching, but that is very seldom the case. I do worry that I may eat too much, but that is most likely just the worrier in me - nonetheless it does motivate to keep track of what I eat and my calorie and protein totals for the day. At 6-months out, I think that I was eating about 4 to 6 ounces at a meal - it varies a LOT depending on the type of food, of course. My calorie intake was about 650 calories a day. In my opinion, you should eat until you feel no longer hungry (full but not overly so) - just use your best judgment in making choices about what to eat. Things like dense sources of protein will stick with you a lot longer than a salad, for instance.
