Roachie, I've had this off and on for years. I don't get welts, but redness. My

sister and I used to write on ourselves, and see whose would last the longest.

We thought everyone could do it...LOL

I have no idea how prevalent it is in the general population or in our

population.

Dermographism is a bit strange to be able to do. isn't it? LOL

I had a friend with dermatographism....it was truely amazing...you just had to

lightly touch her and she would come up in big welts..thus if you could

catch her off gaurd, you could " carve your name " into any part of her and it

lasted for hours!!! (not that I would of course..lol...)..

Hi there,

I discovered I could write on myself as a child. I thought it was neat. I was

surprised to learn recently that it is a condition.

and Roachie,

I didn't know I had it either--thought everyone could write on their

sckin--until I had a skin scratch test for allergies. Imagine how screwy

the results were!! So, to this day, I'm not sure exactly what I'm allergic

to cuz it looks like i " m allergic to everything!

I too could do this, but thought it was normal, I still do get it

(but NOT as bad as in the image that was given). I also get weals

from the elastic and such in my underpands and bra's, sox and the

cuffs etc on my clothes (I though this too was normal) LOL, guess yet

again it isn't. And yes they intch BAd, sometimes I scrathc until it

bleeds :( and sometimes (usually) this makes the welts spread and gt

worse, but it needs scrathcing. I am an allergic person (atopic, I

think is the medical term they use) as I have had eczema since birth

(literally, within minutes or so of my birth) and also allergies,

hives and asthma. So I just thought it was normal or part of my

allergies etc.

WOW, never knew it had a name <he he he> wonder if us EDS'ers are

more prone to this becuase of or ODD skin structures etc.

For me it was eczema, as I was highly allergic to the stuff they

washed me in (and still am, I am also allergic to most soaps) and

worse luck is that my sister was born 15 months later, and my Mum

told them NOT to use it and they did and she had the SAME reaction as

well.

I don't know what roscea is. And as my skin is so allergic etc the

main thing I di is to remove what is causing the welts and itch, put

a cold compress on it or this cream one of the dermatologists made

for me. I would HATE to have my welts biopsied OUCH and I also

haven't seen a dermatologist about it as I didn't realise it was

something not NORMAL.

lace, elastic, things that pinch (or bind in a specific spot) and i

expect my corset will cause abit of this as well, but for the

structural improvements it'll be worth it. i don't wear bras anymore

because they cause welting (even things like hickies and blood

blisters) and pinch my ribcage in an uncomfortable manner.

my son loves writing stuff on my back.

my daughter and i both do this. we can write on ourselves and any amount of

pressure from anything causes redness. ( waistbands, crossing legs,

laying/sitting on a textured surface, ect.) one time katie got hold of some

bubble wrap and ended up laying on it while watching tv and her tummy was

covered with little round dots from it.

Sharon, Thanks for the response. Do you take anything for the itching?

Sometimes I have to change clothes several times a day because it drives me

so crazy. Have you seen a dermatologist for it? I am not in a huge hurry

to go back to my dermatologist for it as he said he would biopsy the itchy

welts to see why they spread. Of course he said that complete with an

eyeroll.

Are you sure that it was eczema you had at birth? I have rosacea and both

my girls were born with it as well. The docs at the time said it was due to

hormone surges during birth; that they soemtimes see,

Thanks again for the response.

Sigh - guess this is something else I should be letting the docs know about

that I haven't. Sometimes it's amazing the things we put up with since we are

going through so much already with our major EDS stuff.

I've always had this dermographism - where you could actually draw on the

skin. But I have to say that along with a lot of other skin things over the last

3-5 years this has gotten worse. Guess I should let the docs know about how if

the bottom sheet gets crinkled the painful indentations it actually causes in my

skin can even wake me up.

I've found when the indentations/welts are " healing " is when they can itch

like made. If you let the source of irritation go on too long - like sleeping on

the crinkled sheets - they get painful then move to the itchy stage.
