Guest guest
, I don't think any of your fears will be a problem. I eat berries, high fiber foods and anything else I want. I am 6 months post op and do not have a major problem with loose skin yet. I have some " flab " on my upper inner thighs, but not what I would call a serious problem yet. Guest guest
Hi : I'm Frances in Chapel Hill. I had the MGB 03/05/99. I have lost 90lbs. and have not had any complications. It is wonderful. Hopefully you will have someone that you can send to the drugstore when you are released from the hospital. And you can go ahead and purchase your juices and soft foods. I didn't need any pain meds. Used the pump only once right after surgery while in the hospital. If you would like to talk to me call me at 966-1396. Guest guest
1. If anyone's every had a c-section....How does the pain of this surgery compare to that???? I didn't have a C-section but I did have an ectopic pregnancy that necessitated a hip-to-hip cut across the bikini line. That pain was significant. With the MGB I had some discomfort when coming out from under the anesthesia, before the PCA (patient controlled analgesic AKA pain pump) was installed. Dr. R had a shot of Toradol on order and I was soon very comfortable. That was the only pain shot I took. I did have a pocket of gas in my left shoulder immediately post-op but I just refrained from using that arm and got up to walk as soon as I could (7 hours post-op). With this activity I was able to belch the gas out before morning or about 14 hours post-op. No incisional pain. Some topical tenderness, kind of like doing a bunch of sit-ups. The day I was released I was able to lift luggage and walk three different airports all with no pain meds. 2. Once the healing process is over what do your scar's look like???? I am only 2+ weeks post-op but my scars are beautiful! I am someone who generally keloids, or has raised scar tissue. I had my staples removed by my PCP on day 7 post-op. I still had to use one butterfly suture across each incision but only for three days. They all stayed together and are tiny fine pink lines. I may even show off my midriff someday. I have pictures from 2 days post-op and 2 weeks post-op. I'll try to post them to the onelist site before the end of the week. 3. Is hair loss something to expect or does this only happen to a small percentage of patients????? I believe Dr. R's literature states somewhere between 20-30% of WLS patients loose hair. He will talk to you about Minoxidil if you like. I truly didn't agonize over this tradeoff too much. I have yet to hear of anyone who didn't regain their lost hair in short order. 4. Other than vitamins are there any medications you have to take for life??? The only regime I am aware of is 3X the daily dose of multivitamins and one dose of metamucil daily for life. 5. If I am from out of town will I have to stay for the whole week or are there some of you that Dr. R. has released early????? There are some who have left early but my experience is the Dr. R will not commit in any way to an early release. It's got to be a " we'll see " situation because everyone's different. If you are from out of town he's even specific that flight plans at 7-10 days should be able to be changed if necessary. I personally had surgery 12/27 and was home 12/29. I flew from Tulsa, OK to Durham. My understanding is that the first 7-10 days are the most vulnerable insofar as leaks, infections, etc. Good luck to you and let us know what else we can help you with! Sincerely, na (hathfrtt@...) 272 on day of surgery 252 19 days post-op

Guest guest
Stef, I'm 6', not much taller than you are, with a large frame and my goal weight (for myself) is 170 but I'll be satisfied with anything under 200....149 does seem awfully low...did you get that from your doctor or did you set that yourself? Guest guest
, My Dr's nurse calculated it. I plan on questioning this goal. I was thinkin that 170 would be good for me. I checked my BMI at that weight and it is at the low end of normal. I am big boned, (seriously) my wrist has little fat around it and it is just under 8 inches. Thanks, Stef RE: Just a few questions Stef, I'm 6', not much taller than you are, with a large frame and my goal weight (for myself) is 170 but I'll be satisfied with anything under 200....149 does seem awfully low...did you get that from your doctor or did you set that yourself?
