Titanium Plates, Screws-Safe?

Hi all...I'm scheduled for surgery this Thursday for lower jaw

advancement (6mm). I understand that there will be 2 plates plus

screws used to secure the bone cuts. Has anyone had any problems or

heard of any negative long term effects from having this metal in the

body for 30 plus years?

I don't know about 30 years, but I had this surgery 10+ years ago and

no problems for me with the screws or wires, I don't think I have

plates. I don't think they used them too much then.

Hi Kattwoman!

Best of Luck with your upcoming surgery. My surgeon says that the

plates themselves usually don't cause any problems but after the bone

is healed, it's no big deal to remove them if for any reason you are

not comfortable with them. He says that some people who are very

petite with hardly any fat can feel them thru the skin and want them

removed... I don't have that problem, ha, ha.

AS for them causing any side effects, I haven't heard of any and am

not bothered by them at all (surgey almost 7 mos ago).

Yikes! I'm not the one with the upcoming surgery! At least I hope not

in the near future anyway! LOL

This may be a stupid question, but where exactly are the plates put?

I just had genio a week ago and had a plate put in. Are the in the

front or on the bottom? When I touch underneath my chin, off to the

side, I feel something hard. I am also pretty unhappy with how I

look right now. My dr. said that it would take about a week, and I'm

almost in panic mode if this will be my final result!! Also, when I

try to smile I look awful.

Hey i would do a search on yahoo for the genioplasty and you get alot

of hits, i remember finding a few pages, which i did not save but

gave me a ton of pics of exactly what they do and where they put

plates etc.

As for your smile, not to worry, i posted the same question last

week, right when i was post op, i was scared and my smile is still

crooked, like elvis type smile, it scared the hell outa me, but

people on the board assured me as well as my surgeon that all is

well. My surgeon said its just from the numbness and hte nerves being

compressed from the swelling, he assure me that the nerves

controlling ur smile are not even touched in this surgery so just

give it time and ull be good to go.. remember swelling takes months

so as far as appearance goes give it atleast a month. good luck

If your surgeon took post-op xrays, ask to see them. I'd also suggest

you don't go poking around looking for the plates. Things are still

healing and you don't want to cause problems. Myself, I couldn't

stand to touch my chin for several months, and even now, I gingerly

put it on the ground when doing certain yoga postures.

I actually thought my surgeon might have put plates or implants up in

my cheeks since I had these lovely matching nike swoosh bruises under

my eyes. When he showed me my post-op xray (upper/lower/genio), there

was a plate in the center of my chin where it had been cut,

connecting upper to lower portion (on the front, not below the chin),

and there was also wiring on the right side. Next time I see him, I'm

going to ask why he put wires in - so far, all we can figure out is

that maybe he's bugged me or something

If you look at my album (linda's) in the photo section you will see

my xrays which show the location of the plates & screws. I can't feel

mine at all. Course my chin is still pretty numb except on the

bottom. I think the plate on the chin is directly on top of the front

area which was moved forward... (i didn't state that very clearly but

if you look at the xray you will see it.)

I think it takes a long time to see the " finished product " cause all

the muscles in your face & mouth have to readjust so don't panic.

Just give yourself time to adjust to all the changes.

I didn't have a genio, but I did have an upper/lower w/hip graft for

overbite. On my upper jaw, the plates are attaching my upper jaw to

my cheekbones, they are right below my eye sockets. I can feel screw

tops, but just barely when I run my fingers across those. On the

lower right, I can feel the gap where my lower jaw was cut and moved

forward, but not the metal and on the lower left I have a lump and a

gap. I had a bone callous from a previous break which I think is the

lump and the gap is where they put the bone from my hip. Looking at

the xrays, I've got enough metal in that side to rebuild an engine,

several strips that angle from in front and in back of the hip graft

to keep it in place. I tried counting my screws at my last surgeon

appt, I think I had over 30 when I lost count.

BTW, your surgeon is crazy if he thinks that you will be able to see

your final result in only a week, even with just a genio. I still

have residual swelling around my lower cheeks and I'm 4.5 months post

op. While my face did undergo a lot of trauma and I didn't have a

genio, a week is not nearly enough time for the final settling of the

bones and everything. I took pics back in October and I look very

different from then until now and that was just 2 months ago. Hope
