[living-with-als] Urgent Action Alert CALL THE WHITE HOUSE — EXPAND

STEM CELL RESEARCH!

Urgent Action Alert

CALL THE WHITE HOUSE — EXPAND STEM CELL RESEARCH!

Momentum is building to expand the current federal embryonic stem cell

research policy.

On August 9th, 2001 the Administration announced a policy to permit limited

funding of embryonic stem cell research, (funding only on stem cell lines

derived prior to the date of the President's announcement). However, this

policy

has proven too limiting, and the U.S. National Institutes of Health now

says

that expanding the policy will speed research.

Embryonic stem cells are special cells that can develop into every type of

cell in the human body and could potentially be grown into differentiated

cells

to treat individuals suffering from a variety of injuries and diseases such

as, paralysis, Parkinson's, juvenile diabetes, ALS, Alzheimer's, and

countless others.

These stem cells come from excess frozen embryos in fertility clinics,

donated by couples who no longer want or need them because they have

finished

their fertility treatments. More than 400,000 embryos are currently frozen;

if

they cannot be used for stem cell research, they will be discarded.

The Bush Administration has the power to expand this policy. We need you to

call the White House today to urge the Administration to help find cures by

expanding stem cell research.

Please call the White House Switchboard any time next Tuesday and Wednesday

July 13 and 14, particularly from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, at

.

Please use the information below when calling the White House. Also, please

share this with your friends and family.

Talking Points:

As a voting American, I am calling to ask President Bush to expand his

policy

on embryonic stem cell research and allow scientists to explore the full

promise of this research.

Explain your personal story and why finding a cure is important to you.

Embryonic stem cell research has the potential to treat and better

understand

Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, diabetes, spinal cord injury, and a host of other

diseases.

Currently the NIH says only 19 stem cell lines are available, far short of

the more than 60 plus lines that the Bush Administration in 2001 estimated

to

be suitable and available for research under their policy.

I strongly urge the President to help us find a cure for over 100 million

Americans who suffer from diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, spinal

cord

injuries, autoimmune diseases, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and multiple

sclerosis.
