Guest guest
Hi Pam! I went to Elkhart Hospital in Elkhart, Indiana. I stayed there for two and a half months. (They tried to send me home twice but was back w/in 48 hours each time.) Finally, on Demerol and Morphine, not getting any relief from the pain that was going to my back, they sent me to IU Med Center. My doc there was Dr. Sherman (Stuart Sherman). From what I understand he and dr. Lehman work closely together. I LOVE this man - Sherman. First, welcome to our group! I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. I live in Warsaw, Ind. I am glad you have been to IU Med Center. I saw Dr. Fogel at IU. Karyn is our group leader and founder she lives in Indy. She has been off line for a bit due to health and comp problems. Any way I just wanted to welcome you. It is nice to have you! Becky

Guest guest
Hi Kathy, No she was never diagnosed with that, I'm not sure her doctor even knew about that symptom. She died suddenly during sleep 4 years after she was diagnosed with OPCA, the cerebellar form of MSA. I'm glad Dave got a trach, I'm sure it's saved his life. Hugs, Pam Pam Hi Pam, Was your mother in law diagnosed with vocal cord paralysis? Dave was diagnosed by accident. He was sedated for a Gastro and when he went to sleep, he started making that awful noise and the doctor looked at his vocal cords. His airway was very small, just a slit. The doctor said he didn't know how Dave was still living. Less than a week later, He had a trach. If he hadn't had that test done, he probably wouldn't be a live today. Take care, Kathy
Guest guest
Pam, Was the cause of death sleep apnea? Dr. Jankovic suggested that Daddy have a sleep study done to check for apnea as it's a leading cause of death of people with MSA. I know there has been a lot of talk about sleep studies on this list in the past. I need to go back and read up on it. I didn't pay a lot of attention to those emails at the time. --- Pam Bower wrote: > Hi Kathy, > > No she was never diagnosed with that, I'm not sure > her doctor even knew about that symptom. Guest guest
I think it was related to sleep apnea, but to my knowledge no doctor ever said that and I'm not aware of what formal cause of death was given. My father-in-law described what happened in that she was sleeping, he and the caregiver were up and in the next room. They heard her snoring stop and went to check and she was already gone. Ambulance was called and the caregiver did mouth to mouth until they arrived. He said there was pink frothy blood coming out of her mouth and that she had coughed up some blood in days previous. Yes do read up on sleep apnea and respiratory stridor and vocal cord paralysis. All of these can contribute to death in MSA patients. Guest guest
Pam, I just talked to my girlfriend in Olympia, too, and she said she had a ball with her five year old in the snow today. She said they had about ten inches; but I don't know if I heard her correctly or not. She is soft spoken and my hearing is declining. (I have promised myself to take care of this issue this year...I keep putting it off) I so wish that we could have met while you were up here. I didn't realize how close Olympia really is. I need to get back up there and also to Oak Harbor to visit a cousin I haven't seen in fifteen years. I do have a cousin in Mesa and I owe her a visit so if I get down there, I will ask her to bring me to Tucson. I hope you are feeling better these days and so is . I think of you both a lot. Also how is your son? Keep us posted as you feel is appropriate. It took Bob over an hour to get home tonight--normally a ten minute drive. They closed I-5 for about a sixty mile radius south of us and many of the truckers spent the night on the interstate or at a nearby Walmart's parking lot. This morning Walmart had free coffee and breakfast snacks for them. I know that they did it more than likely for publicity but I thought it was a nice gesture anyway. I will almost bet money that we have no school tomorrow. The weather man keeps saying it is going to warm up but the thermometer on my back porch keeps declining!! Take care. Hugs to both of you.
