Hello ,

December 10th huh? Good luck and keep us posted. In response to

your 2 questions is: Talking: I could talk and open my mouth

immediately. However, most people had a hard time understanding me.

I had a splint on the upper jaw. Pain: I was not really in any pain

due to numbness. When I had my wisdom teeth out it hurt! and was

unbelievably swollen. With this surgery I had swelling but not at

all what I expected considering what they do to you. The first week

is the hardest, especially day 3 (not counting surgery day). After

that, every day it gets better. I'm 3months post op upper/lower.

Hi Pam,

Nice to hear that =) so basically having wisdom teeth out is more

painful yes? oh that sounds so nice lol cause I handled my wisdom

teeth extraction pretty well. So did you have an underbite too or

something else ?

Later ;)

Hi ,

I'm Carin and I live in the US..... I'm in braces almost 2 years now and

still pre-op. Hoiping this coming February or later for my

upper/lower/genio..... *crossing fingers*

I can tell you this much..... It will be difficult to talk right after

surgery. And as for pain compared to having wisdom teeth pulled.......

hhhhhmmmmmm might be more like super numb. I have read to keep a grip on

the morphine drip from others in here who are post op.

You will have your good and bad days post-op (not like the good and bad days

pre-op) but do remember that it only gets better each day.

And please please do remember to REST!!!!!!! And when you get home to

follow doc's orders. Any pain once you leave the hospital, have someone

call the doc for you and let them tell the doc what is going on......

good luck!

Carin

I only had upper surgery, so I can't really compare to the upper &

lower surgery, but I could talk after surgery. The pain was little

when they finally got me on pain meds that my body would tolerate.

However, when I had to stop taking the " bad " pain meds in the

beginning, the pain was intense. It was like someone had hit me in

the nose with a sledge hammer as hard as they could. My advice - be

sure you have good pain meds and take them on time. Then you should

be okay.

Good luck with your surgery. Keep us posted!

p.s. I'm from the US, but I really got a kick out of your post.

There are so many people here from so many different places, but

our " cultural differences " rarely seem to come out. I just love it

when people from different parts of the US or from England or

wherever, let a little bit of their " home " come into their posts.

And when I read your post, I could almost hear your accent - it was

so neat! :)

Hi ,

I had upper/lower/genio on Aug 27th. I could talk post-op, as a

matter of fact I started calling out as soon as I awoke in the

recovery room - " hot, hot! " and " change tape, change tape! " - then I

went back to sleep (I was not hallucinating - I was sweating, and I

also wanted them to change my audio tape).

The problem is whether people will understand you or not. I was

banded with elastics, not wired. Apparently I mumbled a lot in the

beginning. I do know that I got tired very quickly from talking. Make

sure you buy an erasable whiteboard - you'll find it very handy.

People do not seem to ask simple yes/no questions! Even after 5

weeks, going back to work, I got quite tired from talking.

For me, there was no pain, just a kind of muscle soreness. Nothing

that the good drugs they gave me in hospital couldn't handle. All I

had after day 1 was tylenol with codeine, and I managed just fine.

Good luck!

hello every1, anybody from Oz ?

Hi,

My name is and I am from Sydney. I am 20 years old turning 21

in Feb. Me too is going to have upper and lower jaw surgery and

possible genio. Before I write any further though, I wanna

congratulate the founder of this group for pioneering such a glorious

idea and for the members who have been participating, I say mates you

guys rulez, you have been very caring and helpful.

Ok now I am supposed to have the surgery on 10th Dec this year to

correct my underbite and I am of course scared enough hehhehe. I've

been on braces for 1.5 years and had unforgetable cleaning

experiences with them lol. After reading most of the posts on this

site I have felt that I am not alone and hearing straight from the

people who had actually undergone the surgery is giving me a great

support. I also have a few questions and hope to get some responses.

1. Can you actually talk when you woke up following the surgery ?

(specially when you had 2 jaws surgery)

2. Does the pain associated feel like when you had your wisdom teeth

taken out ?

Thank you for all your support guys ! and just wondering if anybody

here is from Australia too ?

Cheers,

And I only had lower. My pain was never bad, at least not that I

remember -- I did have the clicker though, and believe me, I used it!

I also used lortab at home.

I'd say that for me, wisdom teeth were wayyyy worse -- but then I got

a dry socket with one, and that was the most awful thing I think I've

ever had.

I was away from home for a weekend in Atlanta, had nobody to call for

help, and just had to gut it out.

I was able to talk from the start. Too much so, according to my

surgeon!

Hi .

I'm Amy, 16 and i'm from melbourne!

I also had an underbite, which i had double jaw surgery on 2 months ago and

am doing fine now. to answer your questins let me just say that this surgery

isn't a piece of cake but it isnt too bad either so dont be to worried.

I'm not sure about wired teeth because my teeth were only banded after

suregry so i could talk. Your speech is hard to understand because of the

splint and braces and etc but if you try hard enough and you may also repeat

yourself a few times before you are understood. This goes on for about the

first week then gets better.

To tell you the truth their is not much pain (wisdom teeth hurt a little

more) it's just feeling uncomfortable with the splint, swelling and bands

that's really painful. actually all the drugs they give you in hospital take

the pain away.

It was really great to here that some one other then myself is from Oz and i

hope i helped you with your question, if you have anymore just ask.

Take care

Your close neighbour (neighbours)

Amy from Melbourne

Hi ,

I am from Adelaide and have been following these boards for a couple

of months. Haven't found too many Australians in the groups though,

but it is interesting reading about everyone elses experiences.

I had lower jaw surgery and genioplasty in March this year and

because of complications ( a mini-plate fracture) I had further

surgery in July. I have found that physiotherapy has helped me a lot,

especially after the second surgery when I was experiencing a lot of

pain and lack of movement. If you have any questions I can help

with, please Email me. Good luck tomorrow. ( I will remember the date,

it is my grandson's 5th birthday tomorrow)---
