Guest guest
Betsy, News of wild fires spread faster and louder than days of sunshine and beauty (my implication- the negatives on the procedure are much more dramatic to most than the successes). Don't let the poopers rain on your parade. If it were so bad and so dangerous, insurance companies would not cover this procedure, and for the record, have you ever witnessed someone in the midst of a heart attack? I have and frankly, not doing this will leave me with 95% chance of a fatal heart attack in the next 3 - 5 years , so what you and I are bravely undertaking makes us smarter, braver and optimistic than anyone who speaks poorly of our choice. We are chosing LIFE!!!! So ROCK ON, be brave and know that you aren't alone. Debi --- clippers1101 wrote: > My name is Betsy i'm 24 Years old and my surgery is > on August 9 th and > I'm going crazy. Guest guest
Betsy, Hi, I just want you to know that I am a recovery room nurse, and I help people wake up for a living. In the 14 years of doing this I have only seen a very few folks " not wake up " and they were traumas (folks from severe accidents who were critical to start with). 99.99% of folks do just fine. I myself have had 11 surgeries in the last 6 years and my Roux will be # 12. I am not worried about it a bit. As far as the pain goes, yes, it hurts. But today's medications are great! If you are having an open ask for an epidural, this will help you in a huge way! If you are having a laparoscopic it will not be very painful because you will only have a few very small incisions, but if you want to, ask for a PCA (patient controlled analgesia). With a PCA you push the button and give yourself narcotics when you need it. Another thing you can do is ask for Versed before surgery, If they give you Versed it causes short term amnesia and you won't even remember going back to the OR. Hope this helps! in Bristol, Indiana http://www.myspace.com/womanhead

Guest guest
Those are understandable emotions Betsy!!! I went thru the same thing before my surgery. But, the morning of my surgery I was suprisingly calm. All went well. I knew I was making the right decision. And I'm now almost 4 wks post op & feeling great! This morning I've officially hit the 40lb mark! :-) 380/340/160 clippers1101 wrote: > My name is Betsy i'm 24 Years old and my surgery is on August 9 th and > I'm going crazy. Guest guest
, I had the button and, I thought, the Versed. At least that's what they told me they give everyone. I had LAP RNY too. Maybe Versed doesn't affect my memory because I remember, quite well, everything up until I passed out on the table from the anasthetic. Hmm, now that I type this. I wonder if THAT wasn't actually the Versed? Maybe there was more after that and I just don't remember it? That's an interesting thought. Weird. Anyway, I did like the push button thingy. I did have pain but it was short lived and well treated. I've certainly had worse pain and longer term. I think back on it this way, at least I was right there in the hospital, with staff who were expecting pain, etc. Most of the other pains/cuts/etc. in my life resulted in having to go some where else, then wait, then being " treated " by being told just to wait it out. For example, I had what my PCP doctor diagnose as a " pinched nerve " where my tricep was constantly flexed in my left arm. Also my neck was hard to turn and it was all very uncomfortable and increasingly painful. He told me it should clear up in 3-4 days and if I had pain to take Tylenol. Sheesh I could have gotten that over the phone buddy or dreamt that up by myself. Maybe I'm a bit cynical but the hospital I went to seemed top shelf compared to a lot of the average doctor or doc in a box experiences I've had. That's probably why it costs tens of thousands of dollars too though. Mike > > Betsy, > Hi, I just want you to know that I am a recovery room nurse, and I > help people wake up for a living. Guest guest
Hi Betsy, I haven't had my surgery yet but I can relate to how you feel. I've heard all the negative stories and others fears for me but I decided this is what's best for my boys and myself. I have to say that once I decided to go through with this everyone in my family has been silently supportive(they are keeping their negative feelings and fears to themselves). There are still a few people who have an opinion on what I'm doing as something that's not right but I've adopted the new group signia and the attitude that most of those people don't have to wake up fat and miserable and sore and tired and ________( fill in yours here) every morning of thier life. It will be one of the best things you can do for yourself! You will prove all the negative people in your life wrong!!! I know you can do it!!! Prayers and best wishes Laurel

Guest guest
I had the same experience in the hospital Mike. They were great! If I needed anything they were there. They never gave me anything before surgery. I was pretty calm. Which surprised me! :-) I remember the whole time in pre-op. I remember being wheeled into the OR & going from the gurney to the table. I remember the anesthesiologist telling me he was starting me off w/ a couple of margaritas and asking what kind of dream I wanted. I told him I was going to dream about getting married. That's all I remember. Next thing I knew I was freezing my butt off in recovery! I was SO COLD!! As for pain, I too had minimal pain. I didn't have anything for pain once I woke up. I hurt like I had been beat in the belly w/ a baseball bat. But, it sort of felt good in a way because I knew that this was going to be the worst of it. That this was the beginning of my new life! I welcomed the pain. The nurses always asked me if I wanted something but I always said no. 380/340/160 Mike wrote: > , > > I had the button and, I thought, the Versed. Guest guest
Hi Betsi, I am in the process of getting approved and in the beginning I was nervous as well. I decided to take a practical view of my situation. I have done so much reading and I see all of the bad things that CAN happen as a result of the surgery. These are possibilities, but have low statistical probabilities of happening. Then I look at the probabilities of what would happen without the surgery. It is almost 100% certain that I will end up with hypertension, diabetes, apnea (already have it), congestive heart failure, mobility problems, etc. It seemed silly to worry about what might happen as a result of the surgery when the weight could cause me to have a heart attack tomorrow. Then look at the pros of the 2 options.....the only pro to not having the surgery, is not having the risk of the surgery. The list of pros to having the surgery is almost limitless. If I have the WLS and follow the lifestyle changes, these things will very likely now be prevented and my life will be so much better. When I started looking at it this way, I just stopped being fearful and started looking forward to my new life. All the best, > > > My name is Betsy i'm 24 Years old and my surgery is > > on August 9 th and > > I'm going crazy. Guest guest
Hi Leanne, When I finally had my spinal surgery in 1991 after 4 years misery it was a big relief. Back then I only had OTC pain relievers to use. Haven't had that type of pain since. Mine was C5-C7, neck surgery which was scary but well worth it. hugs, Debbie J > > Anyone who has disc surgery, can you tell me if it helped with what > ever problem you were having?
