Anyway I went to the Internet and looked up Ohio then I went to the site for State Agencies and then I search for disability benefits and there was a long list of the rules and guidelines for getting disability benefits. It says you had to have worked 1500 hours in the last 12 months and then a bunch of stuff that I didn't read. Guest guest Posted March 24, 2000 Report Share Posted March 24, 2000 Hi Tammy F, I myself am getting prepared to start the application process for SSI. I asked our fellow members this very same question not too long ago and got great suggestions and answers. The best one I got was to get an lawyer that specializes in SSi. I'm not sure who it was (I promised once the address/telephone list is completed and I print it off, I'll make notations next to everyone as to what their expertise is) but someone posted that a lawyer cannot by law take more than 25% of you first check. From all the posts it looked like it averagly took 6 months to a year. I am fortunate in the fact that I live in California and we do have state disability and I've obviously paid into it. So at least I will have some kind of income and the fact that I am now married helps too. Before I got married I wasn't real sure how I was going to survive finanacially myself during the process. You will get some great advice from everyone here! I am planning on starting it soon. I am dragging my feet I know and I don't really know why. I think I'm afraid of not working. Guest guest Posted March 25, 2000 Report Share Posted March 25, 2000 HI Donna, I am the Central Scheduler for the hospital. I am the only scheduler for the entire hospital. I think I answer at least 100 phone calls a day. Patients, doctors call me to set up procedures in all dept in our hospital. Xray-MRI Cardiopulmonary . Anything that can be done at a hospital besides surgery comes through me. Can be quite hectic at times. I am very proud of myself though that I can manage so well, being ill. Everyone that fills in for me when I am sick says that they would not want my job and don't know how I do it. It's getting harder and harder to do though. I have two phones one with three lines, and one with two lines. Well, i hope that gives you some Idea about what I do. Thank you for your concern and help. I appreciate everyone of you. Guest guest Posted March 26, 2000 Report Share Posted March 26, 2000 I have been in SSI for about 3 years and was approved the first time. As I told you before, I believe this was due to the documentation and the doctors reports. I reported every little thing that I couldn't do. It may not seem important and we sometime have lived with things so long that we fail to mention them. I have a hard time blow drying my hair, brushing my teeth, getting out of the bath by myself, lifting things from shelves etc. ( because of weakness in arms.) I can't sit or stand for long periods of time, (making any job hard to manage) Brain fog! Remembering! Not knowing how you will feel day to day. Every little thing should be mentioned and made clear that this is what makes working and being reliable almost impossible. I have all of my paper work. Youshould feel proud that oudo it o well. before i go ill wa a social worker working with severely emotional disturbed inner city children and hei famiies. we were always " puttng out fires " butte work was very ewarding. and yet became too demanding. te last year oftat job i was always sick alwayson pain killers and antibiotics always draggin yet i pridedmy self on keeping up withthe work. and the ner ending paperwork. bt it did get to be toomuch. You seem to be a very compassionate person so I'm sure you were the best at your office also! Maybe you can help me to understand something that happened to me a few years back. My daughter had found out that one of her old friends (she lived in the neighborhood we lived in when I was still married to her father) and her mother were living in their car (believe it or not it was parked in the driveway of the mothers boyfriend. He would not allow them to " live in the house " the driveway was okay) anyway, she came to live with us until her mother could get her life together. The mother ended up in two seperate institutions during this time. It was difficult for me as I was a single mother not getting support for my own children much less the friend. Anyway after about 8 months of this I requested a hearing to get legal custody of her. The mother only came around once a month if that and when she did it would just mess up the girl (I don't want to get into names). Well the outcome of this was the court told me I had to give her back to her mother. They deamed that the child was better off living with her mother IN A CAR than with a single parent. I have NEVER been able to understand this and it has been many years now. Well I know you really can't give me an answer, I guess when I saw you were a social worker I just needed to vent. This is what they give to kids who are disabled etc... so the other one is SSD - Social Security Disability. The SSI is only for those who never worked or had a very low income, like student etc...
