Hi Wayne,

I was dx PLS in 1999. Like you, I have a persistent cough that is

triggered by talking. The cough developed several years ago, after onset

of PLS but before I had any symptoms of it in my throat. My ENT has

treated me aggressively with acid reducers (Nexium, etc.) on the theory

that the cough is caused by irritation resulting from acid reflux. He's

also given me Nasonex and antihistamines on the possibility that

drainage from allergies may be a complicating factor. The medications

sometimes seem to work, but then the cough comes back in spite of them.

I have suggested to several doctors that the cough might be connected to

the PLS, but no one seems to agree. One neurologist told me flatly that

he saw no way PLS could cause coughing. He may or may not be right, but

something surely causes it, and it's about to drive me crazy! If I

thought botox would help, I'd be willing to try it, but I'd want some

assurance that it wouldn't " render me speechless " (so to speak).

PLS

Hello,

I don't post much but read almost everyday. I've been dx with PLS

last year and again this year, but still doubt it. I'm fairly quick

for a PLS person because I'm affected in all areas and my first real

noticeable sx was in Dec 2001. I still walk but very unbalanced and

uncoordinated.

My main concern now is my throat which is affected by drainage which

is caused by allergies. Talking seems to illicit a coughing response

all the time now. I saw this in the spring, it went away mostly in

the summer and is now back. It seems like a spasm or reaction to the

talk. I read somewhere that botox can be used to relax the throat.

Has anyone on here used that. Does it work? Thanks.

Thanks Don. My throat seems to spasm and I remember Lavon Lockwood

talking about this awhile back. I have slowdown now in my speech and

mild slurring but its really this throat spasm that is annoying me.

Thanks again.
