A question to anyone that had or has an open bite...

Hi everyone,

My questions is this... For all of you that have or had an open bite,

did you always have it? Or did you notice chnages in your bite at a

certain point in time? I ask, because my bite was perfect until

about 1994, that is when I noticed it starting to open. I did wear

braces as a pre-teen but not for an open bite, I had them to

straighten my teeth. What causes an open bite? My denstist scared

me because he suggested something like bone overgrowth, which makes

me think if that is the case, even if i have it corrected with braces

and surgery, what if the bones grow again and then cause another open

bite? That would be just awful. If anyone has any thoughts on this

I would love to hear.

You can email me directly at elijahdoll@...

Thank you,

Robin

--- Hi Robin,

What a coincidence! I began to notice my open bite in 1994, before

that it was fine. I also wore a brace in my early teens for about

eight months. I am not one hundered percent sure about what causes

an open bite. My ortho said that my upper and lower jaws developed at

different rates, apparently your jaw doesn't often fully develop

until your early twenties??

Anway there are many of us on this site with open bites, check out

the photos.

Good luck

Annie

Hi!

I have an open bite. I am actually going to have a third surgery to

correct it cause the first two relapsed. They think what caused mine

was joint degeneration. They are keeping tabs on mine, hopefully they

are stable at this point. I don't know how old you are or if you're

still growing but normally the doctors wont do this type of surgery

unless you're done growing.

Good luck!

Robin,

My open bite developed around the time my permanent teeth were coming

in. At first, it was minor, but through my teens and twenties it

continued to get worse. It got to the point where it was difficult to

eat many foods, especially in public! I had many headaches that were

linked to the malocclusion too. So, I started my treatment in July of

1999 at the age of 31. I had braces put on and then had surgery

(upper and genio) in April of this year. The braces are still on, but

hopefully not for much longer.

My surgeon said the cause of an open bite is mainly overgrowth of the

upper jaw. In my case, they removed a wedge of bone from the upper

jaw and things lined up fairly nicely.

USUALLY, unless there is a hormone disorder, or something else

malfunctioning, I think the bones stop growing sometime in the early

teens... Docs can check whether the growth has ended, usually by a

series of either x-rays or bone scans of the hand. Unless I am

mistaken, in which case someone who knows better will give you a

better answer, and welcome it is!

And I thought it was just the long bones that quit lengthening at the end of the

teen years/early 20s. Bones can still grow in width throughout one's lifetime.

Can I claim that's why I'm two dress sizes bigger now than I was a

year ago? " My bones got wider! "

tee-hee!

Hi, Marsha! How are things going for you since the removal of your

hardware? It's been a while now, hasn't it? Has sensation returned

for the most part? Was getting the hardware out an answer to the pain

you were experiencing? My daughter's still considering asking about

one plate/screws being removed due to what may be a bone spur. She's

finding the hardware is noticeable now with the colder Michigan

weather--quite a bit of snow today. (Fun.) Give us an update on your

situation. Hope you're doing well! Sue in MI

Hi Robin,

I see you got lots of responses-- which I fully intend to read but am

responding without having read a one so I can offer my totally

unbiased opinion. I was told that (at least in my situation) the

overbite (which was pretty extreme) resulted from a developmental

problem that is , at the most fundamental level, genetic in nature.

In other words, my jaws were " pre-programed " to grow at different

rates due the genetics I inherited from birth. My open bit occurred

during the rapid growth phase from about 11-12 to 15 or 16... I have

seen photos of myself earlier & things appear pretty normal before

that. I don't think you need to fear the problem reccurring because

you are no longer growing as you do in those developmental years.

I have heard lots of theories about tongue thrusting, thumb sucking,

bottle vx breast feeding etc, but in my opinion those are unfounded.

Of my 4 children, the one that was a thumb sucker has perfect bite &

teeth and the two that never sucked their thumbs at all had severe

open bites like me... As to tongue thrusting, I think that is

inherited and it does contribute but I don't think it will cause

relapse and if it is severe, there are methods of treatment...

Intervention in the developmental years can keep the overite from

forming (if it's diagnosed & treated) but back then (when I was

young) we didn't have any kind of dental insurance and I rarely saw a

dentist let alone an orthodontist...

that's all I know..
