Chad,

Glad your dr's appointment went well. Get yourself some protein from

Vitalady to curb your hunger while shedding those pounds pre-op. Remember

that whatever you lose pre-op helps your doctor during sx and you for

recovery! I started walking pre-op and really think it made a difference in

my stamina and recovery~ walking need not be a marathon, start with 5mins out

- 5 minutes back,if not possible walk in your house or driveway, just find

some exercise and commit to it daily.

Keep us posted!

Chad, I'm really REALLY worried about this. Your body NEEDS calories. It just

depends on where the calories come from. I think thye figure that " liquid "

calories will run right trough you, however, PROTEIN calories from liquid are

absorbed, as PROTEIN, not calories as there is little to no sugar in the protein

shakes. Please reconsider what the doc is saying. He will save your life in

doing the surgery, yes, but most docs are just that " surgeons " and great

" cutters " but know near to nothing about nutrition. I even went and saw a

nutritionist, and she hadn't a clue as to how to help me start eating again.

She showed me portion sizes with plastic foods, and her thing was to stay away

from milk... and get on soy (blech) protein. The only thing I really followed

is a visual of the plastic food so I could " eyeball " my portions.

We are all here to help you and are living the postop phase and walking the

walk. We KNOW what works, however, many of the surgeons out there (and really I

don't know of ANY of the surgeons out there) have never had gastric bypass

surgery, and don't know what we go through day in and day out to stay healthy.

They need to walk in our shoes, for one month, no maybe SIX months, and just see

what makes it work. I am out 7 years, and I know for a fact, that NOT doing

protein shakes WILL make you sick. Of course, I am a distal bypass, and I do

have more malabsorption, but with a bypass surgery, you are PAYING to not absorb

- therefore, you won't absorb all of your nutrients.

Think this through. I do have paperwork on exactly WHY we need protein

supplements, given to me from my surgeon, and geesssh, it sure opened up MY

eyes!

Take care,

B

Chad - I agree with . Your new surgeon thinks that protein drinks are high

calorie, but they're not. The stuff that Vitalady sells is all low carb and

fairly low in calories. We mix with water, not milk, so that adds no calories

either. I add peanut butter to my shakes, the no sugar all natural kind, but

still it is added fat and calories, but since I malabsorb the fat, it's not a

big deal. We are all speaking from experience on here, but I know it is hard to

not listen to what the doc says. You have to decide what is best for you. Try

it his way and see if you can stick to a diet. If it proves too difficult, then

add some protein drinks and see if it makes it easier. If so, he doesn't have

to know that you are supplementing with the protein drinks. Good luck with the

pre-op weight loss.

B it is so sad that DR's don't give enough protein a thought and how

it can affect all of the body and just think the heart is a muscle and if we

don't feed it ? well I choose to feed mine and That is not an option I am

going to risk and I do not eat nonsense food when I do my protein

Do you think Chad's doctor is " thinking " Ensure, Boost, Slim Fast,

CIB, etc? All the stuff we would say to avoid, too?

Just a thought; perhaps Chad can clarify " protein drinks " with his

doctor.

>>Boost, SlimFast, etc.,

Good thinking, Elaine! That would make sense.

I know my dietitian (at my surgeon's office) had no idea what I meant when I

said that I'd like to supplement my diet with whey isolate protein powders.

When I told her about the kind of protein powder I wanted to use -- less than

2 g of sugar per serving, etc. she was more understanding but still warned

me, " Not to use protein drinks as a crutch, "

You know.. I realized that she just didn't get it. I had already

asked about the malasborbtion problem and the litmus test question, " If my

digestion system has been bypassed, how can I continue to get all the

protein/vitamins I need from regular food? " with her encouraging me to eat

high protein foods.

I think that some surgeons/doctors UNDERSTAND because they've

researched it and some haven't. I'm going to do what's best for my body

without hurting it.

I know just where Chad is right now. You want to follow your

doc/surgeon's advice because, heck, they're cutting you open and sewing you

back together. They SHOULD know everything there is to know about this

operation AND recovery/lifestyle, etc.,

Protein powder/supplements are a good thing. You keep your muscle

while you lose fat/flab. It protects your heart and other organs. It helps

you fight sugar/carb cravings. If it was loaded with sugar/and or carbs then

I would agree with Chad's doc but since it's not -- bring it on.

---Hi TJ, I am also a shivering North Carolinian. I don't think my

post is the one you were looking for, but a while back I asked about

taking some good hair supplements in preparation for surgery. I was

on Atkins for two years and had hair loss issues so I took biotin and

L-cysteine to help, and it did. I had wondered about starting taking

the supplements a couple months early to help prep my system for the

dietary shock. I am also starting to take a good multivitamin.

Where are you having surgery? I will be going to UNC Chapel Hill, I

was hoping to go to Duke instead but couldn't. I am still waiting

for my PCP to send paperwork to insurance. He insisted on waiting

until all of my tests were back. Its been 2 1/2 weeks! I can't

stand waiting. Well, hope you find to info you were looking for.

Stacie in currently sunny NC, check back in 5 minutes cause it'll

probably be raining.
