I agree that white popcorn is nice. Not that I've had any lately, mind.

Yeah, and a real Coke. The OLD sort. Do you remember when Coke first came

out with " new Coke " ? I remember it was a game among friends that lived

nearby (Belleville, IL at the time) to seek out sources of the " old Coke "

and buy it up. Old gas stations along rural routes were good for that. Then

they came out with the " Classic Coke " again but it's not the same with that

new formula. The only reason I manage to drink diet soda is that I went so

long without *any* when I first started Low-Carb that it'd forgotten what

it was supposed to taste like. It all tastes too sweet to me now, though.

I feel bad that I can join in when we get silly and way off-topic. I wish I

could offer up words of wisdom about various things to do with diabetes,

but at less than a year since diagnosis I don't feel that I have much to

say about much of anything.

Yum for popcorn. I am not promoting a brand but the only kind I found that even

without

butter is very good is 's from Tim's Cascade snacks. I get the one that says

low

saturated fat and low salt. I do really try to watch my salt but then I ruin my

cholesterol and BP by using salted butter when I am really bad. But I have to

honestly

say that they have a regular; cheese one and this one and by itself it is very

very good

and I plan to just eat it that way next time. I just eat too much butter and

none is

better.

One of my good habits is purified water and I use a big Berkey from England

which makes

my awful water very safe and tastes good.

Enjoy your popcorn Stacey.

Stacey - I remember that from about 1955 when I was in high school - the

real butter, no high blood pressure so lots of salt, and of course, a coke

in the bottle. Those were great times and I am glad to have those memories.

Barb in NH

PS - I still eat popcorn, of the microwave variety and if I have a coke, it

is diet. Close, but not the same.

I'd ask your surgeon/doctor as to when it's allowed. I would think

since you're over two months out it'd be okay. I have a 1/2 bag of 94%

fat free Orville Redenbacher's popcorn every week or so as an evening

snack. While it does have carbs it's very high in fiber. It's whole

grain too.

In the program Mike and I go to, one of our nurses, Joyce Salinger NP, told

me her popcorn story and why they tell us no at my pre-op appt with her. She

had one patient who was 4 years post-op, and she went to a group where someone

talked about how it was okay to eat popcorn. Well, she went ahead and ate

some, and lo and behold, her astomosis got blocked thanks to a kernal of corn.

She threw up over and over again, and finally had to be hospitalized due to

dehydration and given fluids via IV. Eventually the kernal went through her

system, but it made her sick as a dog for 2 weeks.

Joyce also told me to expect to hear some people saying it is just fine and

they eat it all the time.

So popcorn for me? No thanks! There are healthier and tastier choices out

there!

I have tried popcorn, it was a-ok, but you only can

eat a small amount. Some things taste so darn good and

this is one of them, only a handfull will do to!

Thanks everyone for your responses! I found an air popped huskless version that

tasted good and just melts in your mouth. I tried a little of it today and it

was a nice healthy treat! I won't eat it often because its not protein, but it

makes a nice alternative to chips and other unhealthy snacks when you have the

craving.

Hi Mike,

I've had sunflower seeds. I just don't eat the shell. I crack them open and

eat the seed only. They are a source of protein and help keep me regular. I'm

not telling you to go out and eat them, but just letting you know that I have

tried them and did fine. But, as I've learned from this group...where one thing

might work for one person, it may not for others.

Mike,

I must be tired. I just reread my post and realized I mistakenly said I've

eaten sunflower seeds. They were actually pumpkin seeds.

I ate sunflower seeds a couple times this summer at my son's baseball

games. It was about the only thing at the concession stand anywhere

near something I could or would want to eat (what garbage, can't a

guy get some jerky?).

Anyway, I ate them shell and all. This was about April/May and I had

surgery Jan 20. I chewed a lot of course. The salt, of course, was

awesome. I swear I could just carry a salt lick with me and use that

sometimes.

I ate roasted pumpkin seeds just last week. I've eaten almonds,

walnuts, and a lot of other nuts. Raw brocolli, carrots, lettue, etc.

Basically at my 3 month appointment the dietician said we could eat

anything we wanted. They seemed to do this as a warning to caution us

from slipping back into bad habits. Good warning because I have eaten

small amounts of dark chocolate and could eat more, worse foods.

Granted it would result in dumping but it would have been eaten none

the less.

Just check with your doctor on the timing. Mine seemed to ask me

questions about what I was eating and would say things like, " So did

you try any such and such? " When such and such was on the menu for

the following weeks not the weeks we were meeting about. I would

respond with a yes, a few things, a little bit, it went okay and

they'd say, " Ok well take it easy and if you want to try some of the

six week stuff during the 3rd-4th week you can but chew and do so in

moderation. "

Maybe my doctor was a lot more casual but it was nice to be able to

ramp up the varying of my diet. It was also a quick lessen in eating

in moderation because I did get sick when I'd eat chicken as fast as

something like cottage cheese or withoout chewing enough.

So are the almonds or cashews OK to eat? My weakness is salty, crunchy

foods, not sweets so I'm going to have the greatest problem there. I

just found a website with almonds with all sorts of flavors. If

they're OK, that might help with non-sweet cravings. It's funny that

even though you can't have sugar, it's easy to find sweet things to

eat. Non-sweet seems to be the problem. I found that when I was on the

Atkins diet.

Mike,

I eat popcorn now but I am 2.5 yrs post op. Early in my recovery,

popcorn bothered me so much, that at one point it put me into the

hospital due to an obstruction. I caution you on it. Now that I am

this far out, I can eat a few cups worth than I am done or I get a

stomach ache. It is one of those complex carbs that is converted to

sugar so moderation is the answer it eating it...as with everything.

Almonds and other nuts are great but high in fats and calories and

tho, they have some of the amino acids required for our bodies to

make protein from them, I again say that moderation is the answer.

The only true things you can eat and eat and eat on, are fresh cut

vegetables. I find this far out that my diet has many little

splurges....you know the salty foods that once and awhile I just

want. But other then that it is mostly meat, dairy, fresh fruits in

moderation and vegetables.

I have now maintained my ideal weight for nearly 2 years and for the

most part my labs have been great (recently my potassium was low but

I take a diuretic because my legs still swell up and it causes our

bodies to excrete extra potassium). You can eat popcorn when you are

far past your surgery..just remember...too much and its gonna catch

up with you.

Hugs,

Kat
