Hi

I am 31 years old, soon to be 32 next month. I have a 15 month old little

boy. I have been overweight all my life, and by the time I was 18 I was 200 lbs.

I was 311 lbs when I got pregnant with my son. I lost weight during the

pregnancy, and got down to 289 lbs. While I was pregnant I started thinking

about surgery because I had a friend online who had it in Dec 2003. I was

jealous

of how great she looked in her pictures. Then last September of 2005, my

half sister died of primary metastatic liver cancer after being diagnosed at the

beginning of that summer. She was just 14 years old. Losing her made me

realize how important it is that I take care of myself and be there for my son.

After I had my son I shot up to 326 lbs fairly quickly, and that was my weight

when I got into a bariatric surgery program at Kaiser Permanente. This is the

BEST thing I could have done for myself and for my family. I just had my

surgery 2 weeks ago today. It's not easy, but it is SO worth it. It is hard to

give up the junk foods I loved, but are they really worth dying for? I don't

think so!

Good luck, and I am here if you need to talk! This is the right group to be

in!

I was right where you are just one year ago.....I weighed in at Kaiser

at 401 lbs. I had my surgery just over three months ago. I had to lose 40ish

pounds in order to have a safer surgery, and I have lost over 60 since the

surgery. This morning I was at 297.......I'm not saying this to toot my own

horn, I just want you to know it can and will happen, the weight will come

off if you follow the program. When I was 400 pounds the thought of losing

over a hundred pounds seemed like some sci-fi movie idea, it could never

work on me, cuz nothing else ever did!

This was the best thing I have ever done in my life. It sounds like you

have a life, with a little girl and all that. Don't let food take that

little girl from you early.........I'm sure you would get people from both

sides telling you what they think you should do. Just do what will make you

and your little girl happy. I'm sure you being around for her wedding is

what's going to make her happy.

I had the RNY surgery, laporoscopic. My husband didn't want me to get the

surgery when I first told him I was thinking about it, but when I explained to

him that I felt it was the only way I could get the weight off and keep it

off, he came around. Is your best friend overweight, too? Often people who are

overweight are the most negative about surgery, because they aren't ready to

lose weight themselves or don't want to commit to giving up a lot of foods,

and are jealous or envious. You have to do what is right for you, not for your

friend. I have an Aunt who didn't think I should get the surgery. She asked

me why I couldn't " just stop eating. " I had to explain to her that it is an

addiction, and she should know very well how hard it is to fight an addiction,

as she is off and on methamphetamines for years and years. That made her

shut up!

Good for you about the pool. I go to my local YMCA and do water aerobics and

lap swimming. Today my mother-in-law and I took my son swimming there, and

it was great!

Mike, I am so happy that you are doing so well, that is wonderfull news

and keep up the good work. Yes I have ppl telling me that I should not

have this done, but my doctor says it is up to me but that this is the

only way. Yes I want to be here for my daughter , she is a true gift

from God and I can't let her down. I have made a life choice to change

and to live and NOT for food, but for me and my daughter. I have faith

that I can find a way to get this paid for and get it done. I have also

really started watching what I eating and eating healthy, but due to my

back I can only do pool exsersize. I have found a inside pool that I can

become a memeber of and go everyday like my doctor wants me too....

Thank you and God bless

It depends on the individual. My husband took a week off work to care for

our son when I got home from the hospital. All I wanted to do was sleep the

first 4 days. By day 6 I was able to care for him. I am not weak, but I do get

tired sometimes, as my body is still healing. No matter what surgery, you will

need someone to help you with your child during your recovery. Some surgeons

give you lift restrictions. Mine did not. Some people are prone to hernias,

depending on body shape and type, so there may be a lift restriction from 2 to

6 weeks. You have to decide that you will work it out, no matter what.

Let me put it this way... Would you rather die young and not be there for

your daughter because you didn't want to get someone else to care for her for a

week or so? What's a week or so, compared to her having a lifetime with no

mommy? My son was just fine with me being out of it for a few days. He didn't

care a bit.

You are also lucky because your daughter is still so young that she won't

remember you being a " fat mom. " She also won't remember that you needed someone

to help you take care of her for a week or so after surgery.

I am really glad that my son won't remember that I was ever fat. He won't

have to be embarrassed of me when he starts school in a few years, and he won't

have to deal with other kids making jokes about his mom because she is fat.

Another great thing is that by the time she is old enough to want to go

camping and to amusement parks, you will be able to take her and fit on rides,

and be able to walk and be active. Think of all the fun things you can do with

her that you wouldn't be able to do at the weight you are at now.

When I started this process I couldn't clean the apartment we were living

in. I couldn't stand for very long because my back hurt, so doing dishes was

difficult. I couldn't carry my son for long or hold him on my lap, since I

didn't have a lap. Stairs made me huff and puff and turn red. Walking anywhere

was horrible, so I didn't even want to go grocery shopping or go anywhere.

You bring up the most painful part of being

overweight. We live in a very wealthy community, full

of barbie doll mom's who train their children to be

just as heartless as they are. I can't tell you how

many times my youngest would come home heartbroken

because kids would say to her, " erin, your mom is

soooooooooooooo fat! " and they would;n't play with her

or let her join in their play groups. Then I met one

of the Mom's because our daughters were ont he same

soccer team, and she verified that alot of the Mom's

didn't like me because I was fat and wouldn't let

their girls be friends with because of my

weight,,,,how freakkin mean is that?

WELL, here's the good news, eri has bloomed into a

beautiful girl, and I won't be fat forever! Ha!

So many of us know what you are going through. I remember going to Dr

appointments and when the dr came in I told him I know that I am fat, so please

do not tell me that I am overweight I know it.

When I started this journey I weighed 366.6 pounds. I am 36, for years I

tried to lose weight and did not want to have the surgery, I thought that I

could do it on my own. I did not want to take the easy way out, and that is

what I really thought of the surgery. I have now done a lot of research as well

and realize that this is not the easy way. I felt like I am a failure because I

cannot do this on my own. At a seminar that I went to the DR said that I have

less that 1% chance of taking the weight off and keeping it off on my own. I

need to have the surgery if I am going to be sucessfull. I had already come to

the conclusion on my own that this was the best thing for me.

Let me tell you that this is not easy. I was told to lose 30 pounds before

the surgery. Everytime I talked to the program they asked if I had lost weight,

when I told them how much I lost they told me I had to get the weight off or the

surgeon would not do the surgery. I am happy to report that I have lost the 30

pounds and them some. It has not been easy. I have been starving myself for 2

weeks.

I get to have my surgey on July 31, six days from now.

I asked my surgeon last week when I saw him and asked why he did the surgery

and he said that he wants people to have a better life. That is why I want the

surgery I want to live to be old. Maybe one day get married and have kids. I

am happy that I made to the choice to do this. Next week I am going to be a

loser and I cant wait.

One of the doctors in my surgeon's group was conducting a seminar on

the surgery pre-op and told everyone that he likes going to medical

seminars because he is able to tell other doctors that his specialty

is curing diabetes and high blood pressure. Even sometimes high

cholesterol.

Pretty funny but also true.

Good luck with your surgery Barb and . I was 491 or more this

time last year, had my surgery on Jan 20, and am around 332 today.

I'm not even sure how far I can walk anymore because everyone I walk

with gives up or gets tired and wants to rest before I do now.

I wouldn't want my child around such horrible shallow people anyway. It's

their loss to not have you or your daughter as friends. You aren't even as heavy

as some of us, I wonder what they would have thought if you were 326 lbs

like I started out as. I hope when you get thin, if they try to be friends

then,

I would snub them so hard their ears smoke!

Oh man, that reminds me of a time I was in 2nd grade, and it was recess, and

I overheard a 1st grader talking about me. She said to another kid, " That

girl looks pregnant! " I was so hurt and upset. In 4th grade I had a crush on a

boy in another class, and some girl told him. He then made sure to say I was a

" barrel of lard " within my hearing range. I was devastated. People are very

cruel, indeed.

You are so nice, though I don't weigh 300 lbs, I still

have people constantly asking me if I am pregnant.

But beyond my appearance, I do have health issues just

give anyone the time of day after my weight is gone

that found it necessary to traumatize my daughters. I

Dana, I have thought about her growing up with me fat and that

scares me more than anything. I don't want her to go threw hell

because of me.I am so very looking forward to being able to do more

with her. Right now I can't even get on the floor with her I spend

time playing with her on the sofa or I take some of her toys to the

bed I lay right there with her and play with her as she sit's and

plays and climbs. I do as much with her as I can and pay for it alot

of times. See I have 2 hernerated disc's in my mid back, and I have

DDD in my low back pretty bad. But I know once I have the surgery

and start looseing my weight that thing's will be better for me. I

can't work. I am the same way you was and it is hard. I hate haveing

others do things for me so I push myself and end up in ALOT more

pain cause of it. if you would not mind if you have an IM not matter

what one it is I will down load it. it just seems we have a very lot

in commen. I would like to be there for you if you would let me.

Talk to you soon. I hope! Keep upi the Great work and God Bless.

Barb, I am so very happy for you that you are getting your surgery

next week. I will keep you in my prayers. WAY TO GO on loseing the

30 lbs + I have thought about this for about 3 yrs myself even went

to a group meeting and met a Dr. when I lived in Ga. I did not

weight what I do now then. I fell when I was carring my daughter,

down about 20 steps. Was very lucky I didn't lose her. God Blessed

me and she was ok. But I on the other hand.... I have done nothing

but gain weight sence getting hurt with me not able to do alot. I

know my weight is the reason I my back hurts as bad as it does. I

know once I have this done that my life will be so much more

because I will be able to live life and not have my weight hold me

back. I know this is not an easy way out by no means. I am ready I

have to live for my daughter and myself. Please let me know if you

need anything. If I can I will help in what ever way I can. God

Bless

Debi,

It amazes me how ignorant people can be especially with children.

Sometimes I can't believe what comes out of peopls mouths. I know that

it's hard right now that those children don't want to be your

daughters friend but in the end it's a great thing. She won't be

exposed to that type of ignorance. She's unfortunately learned a hard

life lesson but in the end it will make her a more sympathetic and

caring person. She'll be a winner for it and those children will grow

up to be miserable person. She'll be holding her head up high with her

mom and her side with pride!!! Unfortunately those children will grow

up to be ignorant too.......

Dana,

You are so nice, though I don't weigh 300 lbs, I still

have people constantly asking me if I am pregnant.

But beyond my appearance, I do have health issues just

as serious as someone twice my size. Anyway, I won't

give anyone the time of day after my weight is gone

that found it necessary to traumatize my daughters. I

know as a christian woman I should forgive and forget,

but I won't. Anyway, once again, thanks for the

support.

XOXO
