Guest guest
Tina I have been taking Glucophage XR (timed release) 500 mg. twice a day for almost a year. I was for many years a hypoglycemic with LOW blood sugar symptoms all the time. SO, I HATE TO GET SICK AND FAINT, I FEAR IT! So, I was scared that the metformin would cause me to faint with low blood sugar, and didn't want to take it at first just like you. At first there was a slight diarrhea and then constipation problem, I don't remember it being any big problem. (If it is for you, then tell your doctor.) In my case I could manage it and it went away. I would say KEEP TAKING THE MEDICINE. HAVE NO FEAR! I found it wonderful, controlling my new diabetic problem easily. It often felt sort of good after it went in my stomach, like something was " sweeping out " the pit of my stomach. Also, it DOESN'T tend to cause low blood sugars because it doesn't increase insulin. You will only get a low blood sugar if you REALLY don't eat adequately, and then it is easy to feel the low blood sugar coming on (faintness) and get something to eat soon. I got some glucose tablets cheaply at the pharmacy and they don't taste so delicious that I would eat them like candy, but they are there for an " emergency " which I've never actually had. Best wishes for good control of your blood sugar -- that's why your doc gave you the medicine, right? MERRY CHRISTMAS! Love, Janie > > My doctor just put me on glucophage (metformin). I just took the first dose tonight. I'm supposed to take 500 mg in the morning and at night. I was afraid to take it, I've heard people have so much intestinal problem with it

However, it did not lower his BS at all. Still in the 300s and 400s. His Dr. recently added Glyburide and his numbers have been in the 200s and now some high 100s. I want him to check with his doctor to see if he can do a trial of just the Glyburide and see how it affects his numbers and his stomach. I'm sure it's just a matter of you and your doctor finding the right medicine for you. Amber
Guest guest
My husband took this for several months before he had to stop. He was miserable all day long. His bg levels never got near normal (stayed high), probably from the stress and pain in his body. They played with the levels, once a day, twice a day, combined with actos. Finally, the doctor prescribed Glipizide. What a difference! No abdominal pain, no side effects. And the best part of all -- after a couple of weeks, 's bg levels were in the normal range -- even after an occasional indulgence! I think a lot of people do great with metformin. My father-in-law takes it with no problems. I say, give it a try. You might be one of those people it doesn't affect adversely! But there are alternatives if you can't stand it after giving it a good chance :-) Gwen in FL SAHM to 6yo , 3yo & 1yo Audrey
Guest guest
I got a little gas the first couple of days when I started my Merformin. It wasn't painful or excessive. Other than that, I had no ill effects. I scheduled it to be taken right after tha start of the evening meal along with the rest of my meds and that seemed to minimize any ill effects on my gut.
