I was wondering if anyone else took a portable cd player with them and

if they did did you really use it? I was thinking I could use it while

walking? Thanks

I prefer to walk with someone else so that I don't

poop out too soon, plus walking while talking is an

additional benefit. However, when I walk alone I

definitely take an ipod. Upbeat music to keep my pace

consistent. I see this lady who wears hers, and she

is a skinny mini, the funny thing is she sings and

wiggles her bum while running...it's a hoot. She is

in great shape, a real pro!!!

I didn't make use of anything I took w/ me except my lip balm. HAHA! I

took a couple of books, word search puzzle & cross stitch. None of it

ever made it out of my bag!

**MEN STOP READING HERE*** LOL

Although, I would recommend for the ladies to make sure & take some

" feminine hygiene " products just in case. I was on my period during

surgery (sorry guys, TMI, I know) and was thankful I took something w/

me. And sometimes if it's almost that time the stress of the surgery

will make you start.

,

Definitely take the lip balm and a few other suggestions include:

Your protein - I hated the protein flavor they added to the foods, in fact it

made me sick, so they allowed me to use my own protein

Underwear and pajama bottoms - after the first day, I felt strange walking

around in just a gown with nothing underneath and at night I would get cold, so

they allowed me to wear my underwear and pajama bottoms

Shower products - you may want to take a shower while you are there and may want

your own shampoo, soap, etc.

Goodluck !

Definitely some pjs! That will make you feel a little bit more human.

When they helped me get up that first time I had them help me get my pjs

on too! Made me feel so much better!

I am beginning to believe that the stress of surgery does make you start, many

of the women here seems to have experienced the same. Interesting.

I didn't even feel the pee bag. I was actually glad it was there because I

couldn't pee on my own due to all the pain meds!

I didn't bother to bring my iPod. I brought a book, but never even

opened it. When I wasn't being checked by nurses or walking, I was

sleeping. It seems like as soon as I was in bed, my eyes would

automatically close because the pain meds made me drowsy. I even fell

LOL!!! Too funny Mike. I didn't have to suffer thru that thankfully!

They took my cath out before I even left recovery! But, I did have to

use the dreaded bed pan once. The doctor was kind of mad when he came

in & found out they didn't let me get up to go pee. He helped me get up

& changed into my pjs & let me go to the bathroom. Ahhhhhh...

Hi Dana,

I am a Kaiser patient too, I will be having my surgery

at Kaiser in Fremont in August!!! I was such a silly

duck, I really thought I would have had my surgery so

much sooner, but I got hung up on the last pound I

had to loose. Anyway, I can't wait, Dr. Dennin will

be my surgeon, and the man I love most after the

Husband!

Keep up the positive attitude, you are going to be

awesome!

LOL! I suppose it would probably be more painful for men seeing as I didn't

have any pain at all associated with my catheter. Oh and as for the Versed that

was being discussed in another post, I don't remember even leaving my pre-op

room. I was out! before even getting to the operating room and then I don't

remember a thing until I was in post op and woke up freezing my butt off and

wanting my husband. No was allowed to visit me in the post op room, but

apparently I was so upset about it that they moved me back to my pre-op room so

that I could see my husband until my room up on the ward was ready. I remember

going to my pre-op room after surgery but I recollect very little about it and

for that matter I remember very little about the first day at all because after

I was given the PCA, I was out. It made me very drowsy...I slept alot! The

first time I got out of bed was on the second day for the stand up X-ray with

that nasty tasting drink that made me gag.

My cath didn't come out until the second day after my X-ray. My second night

stay was the worst. I had no catheter and I had these massaging leg things on

my legs, so in order to go to the bathroom I had to call a nurse or nurse aid to

take my legging things off before I could use the restroom. Well, during my

second night, I woke up having to pee really bad so I paged for help and no one

came after 15 min. so I paged again. Another 30 min. went by and by this time I

was in so much pain with having to pee so badly. I paged again and still no one

came so I painfully forced my body in half to undo those darn legging things and

got up from the bed. I went to the bathroom and then went outside my room to

scold some staff for not responding to my calls. For pete sakes I could have

fallen and been hurt or something even worse! When I walked out my door, my

nurse was sitting right outside my door performing turnover with another nurse.

Let me tell you, she was ripped a new one. I was so angry and when the head

nurse came to visit me the next morning, I told her the story and told her I had

better not see that nurse in my room again and I didn't. When I had to return

for pancreatitis and was hospitalized for 2 weeks, I thought I had better not

get that nurse again and I didn't, but I did see her. When they had to put my

TPN line in my neck for nutrition, she did have to come in to assist and it was

quite awkward, but at least she was providing direct care to me.

That is definitely uncalled for . I'm glad they took care of the

situation for you. Like you said, what if it had been a real emergency?

I had the greatest nurses. :-) Of course I couldn't understand them

because they only spoke spanish; but the care was superb!

Well, I had asked the nurses if I could get up & go to the bathroom; but

I guess the doctor hadn't wrote on my chart that I could get up. Then

when the doctor came in he was upset when I told him they wouldn't let

From what I have been told it is not dragging the pee bag around

that hurts the men. I have been told to breath in very deeply when

they REMOVE the bag.

I also told they keep it in till the third day because of the

epideral they give for the surgery

Yeah removal of the bag.........I could have gone my whole life without

doing that! But its only for a few seconds and by that time you really want

it out.......Then you can get up and walk and everything is so much better.
