Eye Prisms Am wondering if anyone has experienced what I call "eye prisms". From time to time lately, usually in the morning, I have been experiencing phenominal geometric shapes in colors of every hue. There is no pain, but it does block my vision (usually in only one eye at a time). I can see the colors with my eyes open as well as closed. Would appreciate any info available. Have seen a neurologist, had scans for brain turmor, and seen an opthamologist. They have no answer for the prisims and see no obvious problems. Anyone had this problem? Thanks. Guest guest Posted April 28, 2000 Report Share Posted April 28, 2000 Carol: here. I have worked as an opthalmic technologist for 16 years. What you describe sounds like an ocular migraine. It is really something that is happening deep in the brain such as a blood vessels spasm and you can see all kinds or wierd things. Alot of people describe it like broken stained glass. Can start in the periphery and work itself inward. Usually is in a semi-circle or circular pattern. This may or may not be accompanied by the usual migraine symptoms such as headache nausea etc. It can present with just the ocular symptoms though and is very unnerving when it happens. They can last from 5 minutes to usually 20 minutes then gradually subside. They can however last longer. One way to check your eyes when you are experiencing this is to cover one eye at a time. Usually you will notice the symptoms in both eyes but one eye is usually more pronounced. People will swear it's only one eye but when they cover the eyes individually, it is in the same place in both eyes and they didn't realize it (ie: left side of vision). One big clue as to if it is the eye causing the problem or the brain, is if it is in both eyes. If symptoms are noted in both eye, it has to be occuring somewhere in the brain. It can present in one eye only but is mostly some type of symptom in both. Other sx of ocular migraines can be like looking through heat waves or seeing a bright white light in front of your vision like a bright lightbulb. Often we have patient's panicking on the phone with sx. Always better to have the symptoms check when happening, but very unlikely able to do that. Have been told by patients that if they take some asprin and lie down it is gone when they get up which does make sense since if a blood vessel is in spasm causing sx then thinning the blood helps it to go through. Hope this provides some insight. If you have more detailed questions, I'll try to answer them for you. I thought it was just me and that i was going crazy, when looking back i now realize that i always " see " the prisms before a relapse of my MS (when my brain swells) just thought i'd add that little piece of info. I'm surprised that the neurologist didn't give you more to go on. I started having them when I was pregnant in 1979. I too was concerned since it started while I was driving one day. Eyes open or closed, I could still see them. After having all of the same tests that you have had. I was finally told that they often precede a headache. Like a Migraine. As time has gone on, I have found this to be true. Just try to relax and take something for a headache before you get one. The older I get the less I see the prisms. Guest guest Posted April 29, 2000 Report Share Posted April 29, 2000 Hi everyone: With ocular migraines you can actually lose portions of your vision for a while when they are occuring. I've only had one but was at work doing an eye exam on a patient and all of a sudden it looked like she didn't have a left eye. I started closing one eye at a time without realizing I was doing it to see what was going on and patient was giving me a really puzzled look. Forgot she was seeing me winking at her. I then explained what I was doing and we laughed. The blocked out vision is very noticeable especially with reading. People say they will be reading and not be able to see parts of the words. Typical time it lasts is from 5-20 min Prisms can start from the outer periphery of the vision and work inwards too. Looks like kaleidascope (sp?) described by one. Really not anything as eye docs that we can do for it other than make sure its isn't another problem. Typically optic neuritis doesn't present with the same symptoms, more of a blurred type of vision and this can easily be seen if the optic nerve is swollen by a dilated examination. Every person though experiences different sensations with things. You can also usually see the prisms, colors etc with your eyes open and closed. If you see them with your eyes closed, it is going on in the brain because there is no visual stimulation to cause you to see colors without the eye being open. Our vision is interpreted in the occipital lobe region of the brain. If there are blood vessel spasms there you can experience the visual sensations described above. I have an eye condition called " Pseudo Tumor of the Orbit " which was the name they gave to my chronic and painful pink eye condition that (at the time) was undiagnosed - it turned out that it was RPC.
