Guest guest
It is very similar, but the flu has fever and sometimes other symptoms - stuffy nose, couch, chest tightness, headache, fatigue, I know it's difficult to differentiate. I had a horrible sinus infection with fever a few years back, I had fever for a couple of months before I realized my body aches were not fibro but a sinus infection. Take your temp and see if you are running a fever, maybe get to the doc if you do. If it's just a typical flu virus it might just run its course, but make sure it doesn't try to go into your chest/lungs. Make sure you can breathe clearly and if not get to the doc for meds. debra bunt wrote: > For the past 2 days I have felt like I have the flu...more so at night. I go through what you are going through a lot of times and it sucks when you are in flu season and can't tell if it is the flu or not. On top of that, I have pancreatitis and when it is flaring along with my fibro, then I'm throwing up for days and feel like the pits with all of the pain going on, too. As a matter-of-fact, I just went through that about a month or so ago and I was crying all of the time it seemed and wishing that there were some way to go to the ER. Love and gentle hugs, Debi/So. Guest guest
Hi Melody and Debra, I have a difficult time sometimes trying to decide if I have caught something or if it's the fibro. I run a low grade fever with the fibro a lot, so the fever would have to really go up for me to recognize an illness by that. With all the muscle pains and aches and all the other overlapping symptoms, I think it is really hard to tell the difference. sometimes I can tell about a sinus infection because it is located in a particular place and I do get those. The other I can usually identify is the bronchial stuff. those things will take me to the doctor. Hope it's OK to use the large type. I have Sarcoidosis in my eyes and lots of time have a hard time reading - even what I'm writing. Guest guest
Hi Debra, Sorry to hear that you are feeling so crummy! Telling the difference between the flu and a flare is difficult at first. Sometimes I have what I call 'no-pain flares,' when I have lots of aches and run a low-grade fever. Sometimes I have a sore throat. But I am convinced it is fibro because it doesn't progress further with additional cold or flu symptoms and usually only lasts until I get some good rest. If you find that your symptoms are not progressing--chest congestion, sinus congestion/sneezing, etc--then it seems pretty likely that you are having a flare. Sadly, the lack of energy and the aches are classic fibro symptoms, as are (for many people) headaches, constipation/diarrhea, tingling/numbness, etc. To help get through it, make sure you get plenty of rest. Getting enough good sleep is often easier said than done, because fibro really messes with your deep sleep abilities, but it is really crucial. Some people get relief with heat--I love those microwavable ones that are filled with corn or grain--while others find that cold packs work instead. Sometimes gentle stretching can help to loosen the muscles--but be aware that too much exertion can actually make your symptoms worse. Have you tried any pain meds? If you don't have any yet, maybe try some Advil or Tylenol? Sometimes I use the PM versions to help push me into good rest. And maybe some news you won't be thrilled to hear...it sounds like what you are experiencing is actually a mild to moderate flare. When you have a major flare, there will be no question of what it is. The pain will be at times unbearable, coupled with things like burning deep in your muscles. But, and this is important, be sure to do what you can right now to prevent this flare from getting a lot worse. Get as much rest as you can, reduce stress, keep warm (the cold makes symptoms worse for a lot of people), and maybe see your doctor for medication/a TENS (electrical stim machine/PT or other treatments. Note that not every treatment works for every person, but these are things that have worked for me in the past, and I hope that they will bring you relief as well. I apologize if I've given you information overload (or if I've mentioned things that you already know!) I do hope that you feel better soon, and know that you can always reach out to the group with any questions you may have. We're here for you! Take care of yourself!! Guest guest
Sounds like a full on flare! When I full on flare, I'm sure it must be something horrible but it always goes away after a few days. debra bunt wrote: > I think it's just the fibro then. I feel achy but no cough or fever. Guest guest
A couple of weeks I thought I had the full blown flu. I was so very sick that I went home from work and went straight to the ER. I truly thought I was gonna die or something. They re-hydrated me, did cat scan, ekg, blood test, you name it. Well, about $2,000 later (that is after my crummy insurance) I was told I was having a bad luppy day and my fibro was kicking up. The ER Dr was so kind to me and told me he wished there was something to give me to make me feel better. He told me to sleep or at least go to bed for about 3 days, take my regular meds and see my GP. I think it can be a real danger just assuming that what is going on is Firbr and then not do anything about it and then get really sick but I just cannot figure out how to tell the difference. --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Guest guest
I get like this frequently. I don't run a fever but feel so bad and ache all over and feel like I should have a fever of about 103. It's always 96.7 to 97.3. I know that when this happens I am in for a hum-dinger of a flare. It's not fun. I feel for anyone who has this. I hope that everyone has a better week. ~~~~~ _____ From: Fibromyalgia_Support_Group [mailto:Fibromyalgia_Support_Group ] On Behalf Of Marti Boguski Sent: Tuesday, November 27, 2007 9:27 AM To: Fibromyalgia_Support_Group Subject: Re: URGENT QUESTION PLEASE Hi Melody and Debra, I have a difficult time sometimes trying to decide if I have caught something or if it's the fibro. Guest guest
Thanks to all of you that responded. I thought all of these aches and pains would be the fibro but dang, I might as well have the flu. I entire body hurts, I climbed into bed about 1pm today and our bed is up high and I have to use a stool to get there and when my knees hit the bed I thought I was going to just die!! I am still hurting tonight but hope for a better tomorrow. I am taking 300mg twice a day of Lyricia but I guess there are even days that doesn't work. I go tomorrow for a Bilateral Lumbar Medical Branch Block with a possible SIJ....if anyone knows what that means. This is to see if it will help with my herniated disc and then Thursday I go for an MRI of my neck. I did go last week to a different pain management doctor and I really like him alot. As far as my back goes I am about ready to say set my surgery date...I can't take the pain in my back AND the fibro at the same time. Yeah!! I am a wimp!!!! I hope everyone has a peaceful night and peacful dreams and may tomorrow be pain free and restful. Then questioning if taking the Lyrica is working and worth the expense and side effects. I realized I had my flu shot last week and now I'm wondering if that plus the fact that we've had a major drop in temperature, is causing the pain. Guess I'll give it a little more time and see before I decide to taper off Lyrica. Hope you are feeling better soon! Sandysboys
Guest guest
WOW!!! I cannot believe this came up right now. Last night after a very cold day, we went out to eat. When we got to the restaurant, I realized I was burning up, I had a sore throat, and every joint (and a lot of muscles) was achng worse than I could have ever remember. We were with friends but my husband insisted we take our food and leave after he felt my forhead and proclaimed that I had a high fever. We got home and I took my temp. It read 97.9. My husband felt my forhead again and said it was wrong, that I had a high fever. He insisted I get into bed (I wasn't hungry). I took my regular nighttime meds and went to bed. Within an hour I felt better. My pain level was lower and I didn't feel hot at all. This morning I am fine. I think it was a giant flare. I guess the only way to be sure you do not have the flu (which is what I was sure was wrong with me) is to wait and see.
