There seems to be a connection between the sugar craving & more symptoms from my Crohn's & arthritis. I don't know if one causes the other, or if they're both caused by the same thing. When I push myself too hard, haven't been sleeping enough, etc.; then I crave sugar (probably for energy to keep going?) & have more tummy problems & joint pain. Pushing myself too hard could be causing both symptoms & cravings. I need to get back to keeping a record of symptoms, what I'm doing, & all that stuff - maybe I could figure out the connection better.

-- Re: Starting the New Year's diet, etc

I definitely see a link between my craving for sugar and my arthritis, I'm trying my best to cut down.

I feel better on lots of water, but I don't have Crohn's.

I'm also convinced that there is a link between my cravings for sugar and my arthritis. Do you see any connections, ?

Robyn, it's sad but my docs are the same way. They know I can't do any exercising at all so they don't even mention my weight. Every once in a while one will ask me if I want to weigh in but I don't even do that anymore. Why bother? I need to go through my closet again too. It will save a lot of anger and frustration. I was looking for a sweatshirt yesterday and everything I tried on (from last winter) was too small. I needed a nap after I finished all that ranting and raving! Ronnie doesn't understand why someone with so many clothes still needs to buy more. I'm too ashamed to tell him it's because none of them fit after about 3 months. So I shop and he yells and I feel worse and ..... it's a vicious cycle.

The doctors know I need to lose weight but I think they just don't mention it because they know it's a losing battle on the pred. I suppose I could start that "2 year old's diet" but I'm not sure how the gut would cope with the carpet fluff and dirt. But I certainly like the sound of all that sugar they seem to be able to sneak into their diet.

Christy,

Just buy big clothes that don't touch you anywhere & you'll fit them longer. And get rid of the too-small clothes - no point upsetting yourself with reminders of what used to be.

Yeah I do need to get them out of the closet anyway! I've been buying everything 3X lately and Ronnie says "Do you wear that size?" I just say yes. Rather than saying "No but I will....." I just tell him I like things baggy.

Just tell him! I tried not telling Denny for a while when I was gaining all the weight, but then one day when I was going somewhere and none of my dressy clothes fit I burst into tears with frustration. I finally admitted why. He said "So buy new clothes!" And of course he'd noticed the weight gain anyway.

Kathy,

The house is a series of stops and starts. We haven't even got the plans drawn up yet. The builder we are using has suggested several plans but because of the unusual shape of our land, plus the fact that we need a separate self contained flat for my M-I-L we are having difficulty in getting a house that fits on the land, takes advantage of the views we have and accomodates all our needs etc. that ALSO fits into our budget. We've drawn up about 4 major plans to date (plus changes to each of these along the way) but they are all OVER budget by thousands of dollars. Eventually, just as the builders were going on annual Christmas holidays (everything in Australia seems to shut down for a few weeks over Christmas / summer holidays) we decided that we really loved our last plan and would just have to get more finance to cover the cost of building it. It is approximately the same size as we have here where we live, so we know it will fit us. So . .

.. when the builders eventually return to work next week, they will find a letter from us telling them to proceed with drawing up and fully costing this last plan. Our hopes are that that will be done by the end of January so that the plans can go to council in February and so that the actual building can start before the end of March. That way we are still hopeful of moving in by September.

But in the meantime we need to get our current home ready for sale (some general maintenance and clean up). We hope to put it on the market in early February. Please everyone keep your fingers crossed for us that it will sell quickly. The market in Australia has suddenly dropped in November and worse still in December due to interest rate hikes. We are all waiting to see what happens when real estate agents start work again in the next week. We HAVE to sell this house in order to finance the building. So, keep your fingers crossed for us that it does sell or we are in dire straights.

LOL--thanks Robyn!

How is the house coming along?

My son is getting the kit for his log home Jan 16, so this week the contractor will be setting the pins and I think starting the foundation. I know that they are anxious to get out of the mobile home. LOL--it's older than they are. In fact I think it's the same year as the one I lived in for two years when he was first born.

Yes, it sure does feel good to get a good night's sleep. I've never been a good sleeper, in fact I reckon I could count on one hand the number of night's good sleep I've had in my life. I remember them so well because they are SO different!

I know the feeling well about "not sleeping". I find I have one good night and then several where I hardly sleep at all. If I have a good night then I can just about depend on the fact that I won't sleep at all the next night.

What level of pred are you on now?

We sound so similar. Yesterday I nibbled on some chocolate caramels all day to give me the energy to cope with what I needed to do and the extraordinary heat we've been having of late. Today I've woken up with joint pains real bad. I've got to cut down on the sugar. I'd be interested in following your records on sugar / joint pains / stomach pains etc to see how we correlate. Could you keep me informed? It may help both of us.

Kathy,

Although we have to get building approval, it isn't as stringent as dictating what colour Christmas lights you can put up. I gather Australia must be different to USA in that all building must get council approval in Australia. They check that the building meets safety specifications, health regulations, suitable structural requirements. The council has building inspectors who check the original plans and then make sure that the building is built to those plans etc. Perhaps this is all done by some other government organisation in USA?

It is the developer who makes sure that your style of building fits in with the quality of homes in the area and that your landscaping also does the same. It would only be in extreme situations that they would try to change your colour schemes etc. But then again, I don't think I'd like to live near a neighbour, either, who wanted to paint their house bright orange for example.

What your council does is done by our building inspectors.

It's the individual developments that make rules about colored lights, etc.

The big thing I like about living rural is that you aren't bothered by neighbors (not that I don't love people, but I DO like to walk around naked, LOL). I don't bother them, they don't bother me, but we're there if someone needs something.

PS, If a neighbor decided to paint their house bright orange--which wouldn't happen with the two we can see, LOL--We'd just put an out-building such as a barn between us and them to block the view.
