I chose not to tell very many people about my surgery because of the various

reactions I received and I didn't want it to play a factor in people's judgments

about me at work. As people are watching me drop weight, they want to know what

I am doing. I just tell them that I have changed my eating habits, which is

true, but not the whole story. When they ask specifically what I have changed,

I tell them that I have cut out sugars and watch my fat content and eat smaller

portions, which again is all true.

So, I guess what I am saying is don't feel pressured to tell the whole story and

don't feel like you have to lie either. Just tell as much as you want to tell.

Re: Two week post op

Congrats on the 15.2 lbs Bridge! Have you figured out what is causing

the nausea? Sometimes it can be dumping. Are you noticing it comes

after you eat certain things?

As for the people who look down on you...just ignore them! You'll be

the one w/ the last laugh when they see you in a year or so & see how

great you look & feel! :-) I've been lucky enough so far that I haven't

encountered that. I'm sure I will when I go back to work. But, so far

everyone has been very happy for me. They see it as a positive change

in my life.

I could not agree more, I dont plan on telling anybody that does not

already know. I am very comfortable with just saying the things you say

about eating smaller portions and all that. How do you explain it if

somebody sees your scars?

I don't worry too much about people's reaction at work that I had the

surgery. There's another lady that had the RNY and the " boss " had the

lapband last year. I think where I'll get the reaction is that I went

to Mexico to have it done. I will probably just tell them that part for

shock value! HAHA! :-)

I work for the Marine Corps, so many of them think you just need to have the

discipline to exercise and eat right. Their perceptions about the surgery and my

having it could have stood in the way of my getting the promotion I just

recently received because they might have perceived it as the easy way out or I

was just too lazy to work hard enough to be thin. You know all those negative

perceptions people have about those who struggle with obesity. I only told a

select few because I am close to them. Now that I have the promotion I'm a

little less worried about it, but still would rather keep it discrete.

I'm glad you have the type of work environment in which you can be open about it

and not have to worry about repercussions.

Hi Mike,

Nobody has seen my scars except my husband and close family members who know

about the surgery. I can't think of a scenario in which anyone would be seeing

my scars unless I show them. Besides my scars are nearly gone. I only have one

that is still dark and I think that is because it was in one of my fat creases.

Hopefully it will go away too.

Hi,

Personally I'm proud to tell them I had the surgery. I think it is

the most amazing gift and love to share. Yes, now and then I get

some not so good reactions (I HATE when people say I took the easy

way out) but all in all most are very intriuged and want to know

more. As for those who don't believe in it etc., I remind myself

they are entitled to their opinion and WE know it was anything but

easy!!!

I am still waiting on approval and am trying to decide what to do

about telling people when the time comes. I have told 4 friends at

work and have to decide what to tell a few other people that will miss

me for the 2 weeks I would be away from work. I am so bad at flat out

lies that I don't want to say I'm going on vacation.

It's not really that I want to keep it a secret and I don't really car

what anyone thinks. The problem is that I have the insecurity that it

won't work and then I feel like everyone would look at me like I'm a

loser (and not the good kind). It's one thing to fail at something and

another to have it be so public. I don't think there is any chance

that I would truly fail to lose weight, but after carrying it for so

long, my self-confidence is a bit lacking.

Assuming it worked, though, I agree with the finger idea for critics!

Mike

I agree!!! As a matter of fact I work at a daycare and my boss told

one of the parents I was having this done. She had some very negative

comments about the surgery. She's one of those people who knows

everything and anything.....I had a few words to say about her

opinions and ended my tyrade with the finger(discretly of course...lol)

I feel the same way. Don't know how to explain missing 2 weeks or more

of work without flat out lying and that bothers me.

I figure that I would rather people think that I took the easy way out

(but see me eating healthy, exercising, and looking good) and not

think " look at that fat, lazy butt who can't seem to be able to stop

eating long enough to lose weight. " I don't know in fact that this is

what most people think, but I can imagine that it does cross some

people's minds on occasion.

I was a little upset with her for telling this particular

person...She's a very negative person. I understand somewhat why she

told her. We work in a small daycare and because of quotas she's going

to need an extra sub when her mom can't fill in. This person sometimes

fills in for me when I'm out. I just wish she had let me make the

decision on whether or not to tell this person. Some people I've only

told I'm having gal bladder surgery( my grandfather...he's 85 a bit

hard to explain this too) others I have no intention of telling. My

boss usually means well but sometimes she doesn't think before she

talks. oh well....it's done and over with now.
