Guest guest
In Oct I will be having surgery. They told me to quit taking asprin, vit e and any herbal supplements 6 weeks before the surgery. The asprin I understand. So I told them about all the other stuff I take, they said I should quit taking all but the mult vitamin as they have canceled surgeries over this. Anyone ever heard of that? Not that they don't want you to take them, but maybe they will cause different reactions to the surgery?? Interesting... Maybe knows this one. Guest guest
St. s wort can prolong the effects of some narcotic drugs andanesthetics.Ginkgo biloba and feverfew may reduce the blood's ability to clot.Ginseng may be associated with high blood pressure and rapid heart beat.Patients should stop taking these supplements 2 to 3 weeks before surgery. Ah ha! This is what I thought, . Our herbs DO have an affect in us, huh??

Some of the supplements may therapeutically thin your blood and most of the time, as with aspirin, it is a good thing (helps prevent stroke, etc.). HOWEVER, if you are going to have surgery you will need the strong clotting factor to help keep you from bleeding profusely during and/or after the surgery and that is why they are suggesting that you stop all supplements for a few weeks before. The Multi-vitamin is probably safe but even high levels of vit C and E alone (additional--which is how most of us take them) can cause depleted platelets. Everyone reacts differently to supplements and anesthesia and clotting drugs and the doctors need to have as " even " a playing field as possible to be able to administer drugs or whatever to make your surgery go well, if you had different dietary supplements in your blood at the time they are administering other drugs they might react the wrong way and increase bleeding or increase clotting to the point that they put you in danger. Guest guest
Susie, Will say some prayers for you and I know a lady who had a lump removed and they did some type of iodine treatment--and she is doing real well! Did your dr. say anything about that? Sending you well wishes! BIG HUGS! Sue Me I saw the dr. yesterday for post operation follow-up and the biopsy > came back with cancer. Guest guest
Sandy, I go back in a month and if the swelling has gone they will do a CT scan. Then I will continue to have a scan every six months for a couple of years. If nothing shows up in three years then I will continue to have a scan once a year. So it is just a wait and see thing. The surgeon said he got all he could see with the eye but there could be some cancer cells that he couldn't see. I feel the odds are in my favor and so trying to look at the glass being 2/3's full rather then 1/3 empty. It was a shock to hear but with the help of all the prayers I have received I am doing good (mentally and physically). I am getting stronger every day and I thank God, all you good people, for that - SusieQ sandy grooms wrote:Susie, That is what friends do for one another. When is it that you find out that they got all the cancer? Still praying, Sandy Re: Re: Surgery Jen, , Sandy, Donna, , , , and all that have been, and are, praying for me. I really appreciate the prayers and warm wishes. You are a great bunch of people that are always there for whoever needs it. Thank you, SusieQ Oh SusieQ, you've been through too much already. I'm sorry this was added to your load. You have my thoughts and prayer. Love you, Donna - PLS-NC
