I have to be on clear liquids the day before my surgery, followed by a

Fleets kit the night before surgery. I've heard some people have to be on

clear liquids up to 2 weeks prior!!

Good luck with your surgery - are you nervous? Mine is August 1st, and I'm

starting to get anxious!

Eileen,

I think you're correct to question this. I would call your doc and

recheck your instructions. I have never heard of this. Usually the bowel

should be empty of food or stool to prevent spillage into the peritoneum

(the cavity your gut sits in) to prevent peritonitis (infection). The

only thing that may have made sense is if you were on a liquid diet.

Anyway, check with your Doc, Best wishes,

I too had bowel prep the day before and on a clear diet for 2 days prior.

I'm counting down to July 14 -- my big day in the OR.

I've called & emailed my doc about this but haven't heard anything

back. Not to be gross, but -- did anyone have any kind of bowel

prep/reduced food intake thing to go through before the surgery?

All I've been told is to fast from midnight the night before. It

doesn't make sense that it would be so easy?

I'm having the Roux-en-y bypass, by the way...

I would expect, based on previous surgeries, that I would have to

make sure my stomach was completely empty and that my bowels should

be pretty clear as well. I would hate to get to the OR and be told

that since I hadn't prepared myself properly, my surgery would be

cancelled. I've never been this nervous before surgery, so maybe I'm

just being obsessive...

Thanks, all!

Different doctors have different pre-op plans. A friend of mine was

having the surgery a couple of weeks ago & her doctor didn't have her

follow any sort of pre-op diet. I had to follow one based on my BMI. I

went 6 days on a liquid diet & did a laxative the night before.

Not to be - um, indelicate - but isn't it risky, taking a laxative the night

before surgery?

I don't have any instructions as yet, as I don't have a surgery date, but I

imagine my stomache will be nervous enough without adding laxatives to the

mix...I'd be afraid of not making it through the surgery, if you know what I

mean...

Hi Eileen,

I had my surgery on 3 May 2006 and I had laparascoic RNY. The only things I had

to do before the surgery were to not eat anything past midnight the night

before, take a Zantac 150 before bed, and another Zantac 150 when I woke up.

They did the job because I had a bowel movement before my surgery.

Hi Eileen,

My surgery is Monday the 10th, and my doc only has me taking a

Prilosec (actually 2) before bed on the night before surgery to get

rid of any stomach acids. Then, nothing by mouth after midnight, not

even water or a mint or gum.

I wondered the same thing about bowel prep and he didn't mention it,

so I asked about it. He says bowel prep isn't necessary.

Since he is the one working in there, I am not going to argue!

Good luck to you.
