Guest guest
I'd suggest applying in person if possible, and bring all your paperwork (with copies for your files, they sometimes lose things) and reports from the Drs. Unfortunately, I tried very hard to maintain my lifestyle long after it was reasonable to do so. I tried to golf with my husband and friends, but what a joke that was! It took all my energy to focus on hitting the ball so I ended up wetting my pants with every swing. I could only last a couple of holes and then had to sit out the rest. I mentioned that to my P.T. and it went down on my record that I could still golf. I don't call what I was doing golfing!!! Anyway, because I attempted to golf, they determined I wasn't disabled until much later than was actually so. Be careful what you say to the medical professionals, and be careful how they note what you say. I've read my medical records and found so many errors in what I'd reported. Either the Dr. wasn't good at listening, or I was not good at telling my history. Somehow I think it was the drs, as I had to tell my history so many times I know it by heart. Anyway, ask to get a copy of all your reports and get your medical team involved in the process. You shouldn't need a lawyer unless you are turned down. I did recieve my ssdi but not on the date I thought it should have been. Oh well. I also recieved medicare immediately, under the ALS waiver. It really depends on the severity of your disease. I think most with the speech problems will be classifed as ALS. Good luck, and welcome to the group. Thomson als-pls.org
Guest guest
Larry back when I applied (1995) nobody knew about PLS there were no websites for it either and I had a dx of ALS. It took 6 months before I got it after being denied the first time. I also did not get the back pay either, I did ask for it but they said that's not the way it works here in Florida!!........ I had plenty of data from my neurologist and PCP. Since then many of us have plowed the way for other people. SSDI now knows about PLS. Glad you got it so quickly.............Flora
Guest guest
Great knowledge. Thanks as I applied for Social Security Disability and SSDI in early May and I was just diagnosed with PLS two weeks ago. Rick Pallas 4855 Lakeridge Drive Apt 2B Ypsilanti, MI 48197 rpallas@... SSDI Hi everyone, I would just like to share my experience with the SSDI application process and to encourage anyone and everyone to apply if you haven't already. I THINK my claim was approved because 1) the social security website stated that " a decision has been made on my claim and 2) a large deposit has been made to my bank account balance. I still have not received the official notification letter from social security (sent via snail mail). When I started my application adventure, I thought I'd be dealing with a bunch of government beaureacrats. Nothing could have been further from the truth. They were all very courteous and extremely helpful. What was orginally described as 2-4 month decision process, only took 4 weeks. Initial interview: 1)Direct the initial interviewer to the www.ALS- PLS.com website, 2) have copies of all the required information, 3) make your appoinment for late in the day (you want to be tired and to put your " worse foot " forward, and 4) complete everything in cursive no matter how bad your writing is. Written questionaire: 1)again make mention of the ALS-PLS website, 2) complete all questions in cursive, and 3) don't lie or falsify any records (you won't have to). It really is a fairly " painless " process. Good luck to all. Larry M. s
