Guest guest
Hello I am new here. I have insulin resistance which hasn't developed into type 2 diabetes yet. My question is what should diabetics eat to get energy?

My question is what should diabetics eat to > get energy? Tamie - The American Diabetes Association recommends a well balanced diet that includes all 4 food groups... and specifically mentions carbohydrates and protein as energy sources: " Carbohydrates give you energy. Healthy choices are dried beans, peas, and lentils; whole grain breads, cereals, and crackers; and fruits and vegetables. Protein is needed for growth and is a good back-up supply of energy. Healthy choices include lean meats and low- fat dairy products. " I particularly like brown rice, dried beans, steel-cut oatmeal, and plenty of fruits and green vegetables. , Charlotte NC T2 since 1998, diet and exercise
Guest guest
> (snip) Diabetics and insulin resistants should minimize their intake of carbohydrates, as diabetes and insulin resistance is the inability to properly metabolize them. One would not put a lactose intolerant on a high dairy diet, nor would you advise a wheat-diet to one afflicted with celiac sprue, and by that logic diabetics and insulin resistants should not base their diets on carbohydrates. > (snip) > [, Bruce] > Bruce - I did not say we should " base our diets on carbohydrates " . But I don't think we can avoid carbs either. There are " good carbs " and " bad carbs " , as well as " good fats " and " bad fats " . When we eat carbs we should try for the good ones (lower glycemic index), and when we eat fats we should strive for the monosaturated good fats (like olive oil). People with celiac disease should avoid ALL wheat, but I have not seen a single reputable institution or study to say diabetics should avoid ALL carbohydrates. It is a matter of choices. ADA and Joslin say to make the good choices. They do say carbohydrates are a vital source of energy, even for diabetics. , Charlotte NC
