But mostly I agree with Barb, it should wane fairly soon if there isn't an ongoing exposure, and if you are taking antihistamines, cortisone and so on. There are a lot of variables, and everyone is different. With my contact allergies, how long the skin stays affected depends also on how long and how severe the contact was, and how much damage the skin suffered --- nickel will actually eat away my skin, leaving not just a reaction, but a raw area like a scrape wound. Contact allergies usually cause reactions only at the point(s) of contact, though. Another thing is you could be reacting to something you commonly ingest that doesn't bother you at a lower level of exposure. But once a reaction is in full spate, sensitivity is greatly increased. And again, if you are in a very low level state of exposure below your level of reactivity to one thing, but with a slightly heightened sensitivity, when a second allergen exposure occurs you are likely to react more severely to the second allergen. And even more fun, scratching can introduce bacteria which can cause secondary skin infections, which can also cause their own allergic reactions.
