I think an outbreak from a large enough exposure can last quite a while

until the allergen is gone, and if you are continually ingesting or

contacting the allergen, the attack continues. But mostly I agree with

Barb, it should wane fairly soon if there isn't an ongoing exposure, and

if you are taking antihistamines, cortisone and so on. There are a lot

of variables, and everyone is different.

With my contact allergies, how long the skin stays affected depends also

on how long and how severe the contact was, and how much damage the skin

suffered --- nickel will actually eat away my skin, leaving not just a

reaction, but a raw area like a scrape wound. Contact allergies usually

cause reactions only at the point(s) of contact, though.

Another thing is you could be reacting to something you commonly ingest

that doesn't bother you at a lower level of exposure. But once a

reaction is in full spate, sensitivity is greatly increased. And again,

if you are in a very low level state of exposure below your level of

reactivity to one thing, but with a slightly heightened sensitivity,

when a second allergen exposure occurs you are likely to react more

severely to the second allergen.

And even more fun, scratching can introduce bacteria which can cause

secondary skin infections, which can also cause their own allergic

reactions.

Ain't nature grand?
