Guest guest
Well we actually had a decent experience for my older son's IEP yesterday and actually ended up with what we wanted and what was best for him. If you do not recall - Jake is 9, very small - size of a 6 year old, fine motor delays (significant - cant barely write - print is legible when he writes slowly but has nto been taught cursive) and some delays. Problem is he is very smart - but has problem putting his thoughts on paper and hates writign as it frustrates him. Anyone this summer they did all the testing. Initally they wanted to retain him in 3rd grade - this was not out choice as we know he is very smart. Well we got his Terranova tests - standarized tests for 3rd grade and he was 90th% across the board - kind of hard to keep a child back with those scores to begin with. Second the pyschologist said he could do age appropriate work. and Finally the educational consultant did a bunch of tests and he scored pretty wella nd in fact in reading comnprehension was at a college level. Had some gaps in math and spelling and do forth - BUT they all agreed that he should be placed in 4th grade with accomadations. So here is what we decided: 1) OT pull out 2x per week 1/2 hour. 2) OT accomadations in classroom 3) work in getting him an alpha smart 4) in regular class for all specials, science history and gym 5) pull out for language arts and math 6) special ed teached assistance in classroom 7) during study hall he will get extra help 2- 3 times a week. He is happy that he will be with his friends in the new upper elementary school - 4,5 6 grade in one school - just opened last year. We are also going to get an OT to come to the house to give him extra ot for his writing and for his sensory issues. ALso we are going to get him a keyboarding program. And also a tutor to help him. Thank you all for you help and suggestions. Also, we have sent all the records of Jake (9), Clay and cole (twins 5) to Dr. Shoffner to review per our pediatricians request. Clay was diagnosed with a mitochondrial disorder 3 years ago by Dr. RIchard and my ped now really thinks that Jake is also affected. Will keep you posted.
