you had surgery? Not anything? Maybe I am weird because I was allowed

ice chips, water, Gatorade, juice and broth. Although it was mostly the

ice chips that I " ate " . Is this unusual?

I had my surgery on a Wednesday. My last real meal was Monday night. I

wasn't allowed to eat anything on Tuesday, and of course, nothing to drink after

midnight on Tuesday. (fortunately, I did not have a bowel prep..woohoo) I was

not allowed to have anything to drink anything until after my leak test,

which wasn't until Friday evening. I wasn't even allowed ice chips -although my

mom snuck me some after my leak test and before we got the results...but i

figured if I could handle all that nasty barium stuff...heh! That was horrid, I

thought I was so thirsty I could pretend it was water or something...no such

luck! So anyways, I didn't get anything to drink from Tuesday night until

Saturday night, and wasn't officially cleared to drink anything until Saturday

late

morning after the dr. came by. My first meal (broth, jello, crystal light)

wasn't until lunch Saturday. Oh, those were the days...LOL

I can't believe they made you wait for so long. I mean I do believe it but

that was a terrible ordeal for you!

I think it depends on the doctor. I have heard some were and some weren't. I

was lucky. I woke up with nothing hanging off me but my central line. The

catheter and ng tube were definitely not on. Of course they wanted us to walk

two

hours after surgery and I was ready to walk. Clotting is not something I

wanted to have to be worried about. So make sure you walk new posties! They also

kept inflatables on me while I was in the bed.

Oops, I forgot about that. I did have the drain. And was more than glad to

have it removed along with the staples a week later. I felt like a completely

new person that day!

Nope. I had nothing that morning. My surgery was early in the morning, so I

didn't suffer too much. :) When I got out of surgery I had an N/G tube up my

nose and was still allowed nothing until the next day after the upper GI. (leak

test) As soon as that came back OK, the tube was taken out and I was started on

clear liquids.

I have heard that some people do wake up with the ng tubes in. I was

fortunate. I only had the drain and the central line.
