Guest guest
Mel, You will keep wondering what might have been and what could be. My son also has MELAS and everyday he surprises me with something I thought he wouldn't know or understand. He has had this disease for nearly four years and I can tell you that life does get better when you learn to live with your child's special needs. Today we are packing to go interstate for a four day holiday. We took Hayden there about two years ago and he can not remember anything about it. This trip should be better as we will have family support ( all eleven members ) and his social skills have improved with the help of his "hayden high fat diet " to assist with seizure control and his diabetes. Please keep on asking questions as this is one way to learn more about MELAS. Best wishes Simone -----Original Message-----From: gavin Sent: Wednesday, 30 October 2002 21:54To: mito Subject: Re:new memberHi MisieI too have just found this group and so understand how you feel.I feel sorobbed of my healthy little girl before she became ill in March thisyear. And although she was only two and a half at that time,I so miss herrunning and shouting.Sofie has had three strokes since then,is physicallydisabled in all parts of her body and has very little speech though that isimproving. She is thought to have MELAS Syndrome though we are still awaitingresults from a muscle biopsy to confirm this.Life seems very hopeless and Icant bear to think of how she was just seven months ago.I tell myself sheshappy and that's what matters but its so hard to stop missing the child shewas. I just wanted to let you know, you are not alone.I feel how you feel andhate this disease more than I`ve hated anything.MelPlease contact mito-owner with any problems or questions. Guest guest
I don't have any answers for you, but I can sympathize. My insurance company (Premera BC) will not cover any of the surgery or anything relating to it. This isn't the greatest option, but you could check with the surgeon's office and see if they would be willing to work out a payment plan for you. If worse comes to worse, you could always charge it and then make payments as you can. > Hi, > I am new here. > I suppose to have surgery this month, but insurance denied. > I have United healthcare. > Any suggesstion what I should do. > Thanks
Guest guest
I have to agree with Yooli. I had UHC and had to go to their second level of appeal--their grievance advisory panel--before gaining approval. Then, when I had to find a new surgeon because mine dropped UHC, they denied me again, even though I provided them with the letter that said my surgery (upper/lower) was approved. You have to be very persistent. If you exhaust all appeals with UHC, you can file a claim with your state department of insurance. Luckily, I didn't have to go that far, but I had obtained the form and was ready to move to that next step. Although I did my appeal on my own, you may need to make sure your surgeon's office is using the proper terminology. Many people here have said that they were approved because their surgery was listed as a medical necessity due to a skeletal abnormality or deformity. It doesn't sound very nice, but it may help you to gain approval. Good luck with your insurance and your surgery. Guest guest
Chasta, congrats on getting through the qualifying! That's a big one. Keep reading the posts and ask questions on anything you can think of. There's a lot of information that comes out that you don't get from the dieticians or doctors. Welcome, welcome!!! Guest guest
Hi all! My name is and I am debating on getting the surgery. I'm 30 years old, 280 lbs. 5' 4". My BMI is 48.5 and my husband is gently encouraging me to go this route. He is concerned for my future health. We have Kaiser ins., and I am calling tomorrow to set up a consultation. I have read back through many of the posts and know that this is a great group of supportive people! - Get more from the Web.
