The intro diet is a sort of clearing of the deck. It prepares the system for changes that are impending. Although gut problems are not always evident, there is a strong gut/brain connection that is believed to influence autism as over 50% of the children have digestive malabsorption. Often instead of a calmer child, beginners see their kids experience die off, with irritability, dark circles under the eyes and a worsening of symptoms before healing gets under way, so you are indeed fortunate. Miracles? :-) It depends on what constitutes a miracle in your eyes. Over 80% of Pecanbread children experience improvement. Some have lost their diagnosis and made complete recoveries. Others who improved on other diets but then stalled have started to advance again once on SCD. SCD is a healthy well balanced diet that potentially can benefit a majority of adults and children. On the other hand, nothing suits everyone and we don't attempt to hide problem cases but deal with them when alerted through the filing of problem reports. I hope this satisfies some of your concerns at that your little one will continue to show positive improvements. Please do keep us posted. Carol F. Guest guest
Eveline, The intro diet is ideal..... but other families here have simply shifted to all legal foods. Many have decided to go back and do the intro diet for a couple of days, after having been SCD legal for a while, because they weren't quite satisfied with the results they had seen. So, you might consider that, too. The most important thing is that you've removed all the illegal starches and sugars..... but going back to intro is always an option. It only needs to be for a couple of days. Really helps you start with a " clean slate " , so to speak. At only two weeks into SCD, please try to be patient...... gut healing takes time. It's great that you are seeing some positive changes, but hang in there, you won't see an overnight, instant healing. This diet is not just a matter of removing all the offenders, it's focused on healing damaged tissue in the lining of the gut and closing all the teeny perforations that let those toxins get into the child's bloodstream. Patti, mom to Katera, SCD 14 months intro diet necessary, when no gut problems? I am asking again the same question. I could find no clear answer on the different websites or the book. Is it ok to start sc diet without intro diet when the child has no gut problems? We started two weeks ago and had almost no problems with the change. The boy is calmer and more sensitive for feelings, but there are no miracles. Should there be? Guest guest
We never started with the intro diet either. I can't say that it affected us negatively that way. I'm glad your boy shows improvement. " Miricles " come slow and you have to work to get them. Give this diet time. No cheating. After a few months you'll see him in a situation that you realize he couldn't handle as well before SCD. There are more subtle changes in our kids who are less impacted with autism, but it is really important to be strict as those sublte changes are changes for the good. Besides, as your boy gets older you want his differences to be less obvious than more. Take it from me, I thought my boy was just " quirky " and would grow out of it. As he gets older his differences and difficulties are more apparent and set him apart from his peers. Keep at it, next year he will be 10 weather you keep with SCD or not. His healing, however, will depend upon what you do this year. Helen, mom to (9, ASD, SCD 4/04)
