Guest guest
I am just curious to know if any of you mommies have had any experience with wet nursing and what your views on the subject are. I am somewhat torn on the issue...on one hand, I wouldn't have a problem nursing someone else's baby...especially in an emercency. But, I think I would be extremely jealous if someone else were to feed my little nursling! I am just curious to know your view points as well. SAHM to NIcholas (3 yrs) and Madeline (3 mths) >> - I am with you completely (that is I am torn on the subject). I have an older sister who is currently pregnant and not taking very good care of herself. She's smokes ciggarettes and pot and is planning on breastfeeding. I sometimes think I could nurse her baby for her or pump so that her baby could get the nourishment of breastmilk but then again I think this baby is her responsibility and if she's to selfish to quit smoking (both pot and ciggs) then that's her own problem. I don't mean to sound like a b*tch here but I have major issues with my sister and the way she's treating this unborn daughter of hers thourghout this pregnancy. I guess she's planning on bf, smoking ciggs, and getting high. :-( Like you though, I could not imagine someone else nursing Davian. I think that for an emergency I wouldn't mind UNLESS it were my sister - know what I mean?

My best friend and I are having babies 5 weeks apart (and both plan to do baby-led weaning as she has done with her older two). We have discussed the possibility of trading baby-sitting when the other wants to go out for a couple hours with their husband. Since we will both be nursing we could nurse the baby of the other if necessary. I am perfectly fine with the idea. She thinks it's just weird. When I was a baby my " boyfriend " was aout 3 weeks younger than me. Our moms were best friends. My dad got a collapsed lung when we were still very little and my mom had to go to the hospital with him, so I was left at her house. Since she was nursing and we were both hungry she nursed both of us at once. My mom thought that was wonderful that she would be willing to do it since at the time the hospital would not allow a mother (even a nursing one) to bring a baby into the hospital (12 year old limit - now they have no limit if the kid is not extremely disruptive and does not cause problems at the hospital). It didn't harm me in any way, that's for sure, and probably helped since 's mom said I had no trouble nursing and fell right to sleep (I was probably about 6 months at the time). ~ EDD 2/8/

My girlfriend and I had children at the same time, and we would leave our infant children with each other when we had to, because each of us could nurse the others baby, since neither of our children would take a bottle!! Anyone in the Seattle area that would do this?? dh and I would love to go out for a night, but little miss Amandelyn will have nothing to do with a bottle, paci or anything else but mom!! SAHM to NIcholas (3 yrs) and Madeline (3 mths) , As a matter of fact i just approached this subject with a neighbor of mine a few weeks ago. Remember i had my wisdom tooth pulled? Well, i KNEW wouldn't take a bottle and when all of these apts started coming up, i got scared that she would get hungry and i wouldn't be there for her...i even had milk pumped for her but she will have nothing to do with it (So what do i do with it NOW???? LOL) I asked a neighbor if she would nurse her for me...but she felt very uncomfortable with it. I don't think i would have a problem with someone else nursing her for me IF THEY HAD TO. I would rather her be fed than for her to scream from hunger. Wet nurses were the norm for someone who really didn't make enough milk....(where did the wet nurse live...? With the baby? or the baby with the wet nurse?) I don't think it should be such a freaky thing ....but it is. --Debbie ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it. I have told this story before, so oldtimers, bare with me. My Mom was still nursing my brother when a friend asked her to babysit her 6 week old daughter. (she had to go back to work) My mom agreed with the stiuplation that she would not use any bottles. The day her friend dropped the baby off, she brought a bag full of bottles and formula. My mom gave her the option of taking them with her or she would throw them away. (probably said in a joking manner as they were really good friends) From that day on, my mom nursed this baby when she babysat her. It never seemed odd to me as a child at all. With the communicable diseases now, we do need to be careful in that manner, but other than that...I think it is great. Both parties would need to agree, of course, to the arrangement. I had a friend whose baby was ULTRA sensitive to what she ate. When she ate things that didn't agree with him, she would pump and give the milk to me for my son as my milk supply stunk. I was so grateful! - Mommy to Jake (3-11-94), Clay (10-22-97) and due Feb 00 Wife to

I am somewhat I honestly think that it's ok. My sister has a daughter who is 3 mos old and if she needed it, I'd have no problem nursing her baby, and no problem with her nursing mine (although I wonder if he'd get upset?) Now her on the other hand finds that totally repulsive and would never consider it and neither would my other sister who is due in Feb00..so I know it's a bit taboo in this day and age but I think it's fine (especially within the family) Gazley Mom to (Oct 8, 1998) http://members.tripod.com/~MysticMom
