Guest guest
Thanks Maybe the Ketek is why my appetite has died. Have lost weight since I've been on it. Phil Re: [ ] Ketek PhiI, I have been on different abx over time, but I am now on Ketek. One reason my doc wanted to try it is that the Lyme spirochetes have not built up a resistance to it since it is a newer drug, like they have w/some other abx. It seems to be helping me, although lately I am having stomach aches, prob from the Ketek, & I have always had an iron stomach no matter what I was on! In the past, I had a lot of stomach probs after IV, w/all negative GI tests, so the GI doc finally put me on Nexium which helped a lot, then after awhile, we stopped it, then my Lyme doc preferred to try Pepcid when I started to have stomach aches again, but that does not seem to help as much. Since he is both DO & Alternative, he gave me the option to try a Licorice supplement that coates the stomach or I can go back on the Nexium. If I remember correctly (there is so much to remember w/all the different meds & supplements!) , when I first went on the Ketek, I was ready to go off of it & the doc asked me to give it a little more time & I have been on it awhile now. I hope that helps a little! Jeannie
Guest guest
Phil, I am on Ketek and had more stomach problems with it than any other antibiotics to date. I like you, had a rock solid stomach. I had slight nausea with Zithromax so I split the oral doses of Zithromax to help the stomach and that helped. I also do the same with the Ketek. It also may be that you have spirocetes in your Gall bladder (difficult for the ab to get into it and...... it may serve as a reservoir for live bacteria). If the Ketek is getting into the gall bladder, it may be acting up as a form of herx. The Ketek coupled with a low carb diet (and higher fat diet) sent me into what appear to be gall bladder attacks but maybe a form of a herx. Do you have upset stomach (acid stomach) in which pepto bismal helps or more like a gall bladder attack- intense pain and cramping and gas? Guest guest
I don't have pains in that area. Just no appeptite. I've lost 10 pounds on this drug. I am eating more carbs now;beans ,rice and other grains. I have resumed coffee enemas as they seem to increase body temp and energy. I just don't remeber feeling this awful when I started any other antibiotic. Phil Re: [ ] Ketek Phil, I am on Ketek and had more stomach problems with it than any other antibiotics to date. Ketek is just a new generation of erythromycin that the drug company is trying to profit from by altering the molecule ever so slightly so they can obtain a different patent, while the other erythromycins are available as generics (excluding Zithromax). Erythromycins in general are 4th line choices for lyme in patients who are allergic to penicillins and cephalasporins, and they are not as effective. Ketek is very expensive, is not worth the price, and is not safe to take on a long-term basis. Greg Greg, You keep stating this but did you know that a lot of LLMDs are recommending this now as a first line drug for Lyme including some of the more well-known LLMDs. Just wondering if you knew that. Not disagreeing with you as I don't know. But what are you basing your information on and are you sure. This is one drug that was recommended to me at Columbia and I know Dr. B in NY is recommending it for patients.
Guest guest
I did not know this, but earlier I posted the article about Ketek to this list from worstpills.org, which says it's a baddie. None of us here worship doctors, although most of us must rely on them (and coax them into treating us right). The fact is that doctors are beholden to the pharmaceutical companies that bring free samples to them and market their " new " drugs heavily. In fact, most doctors learn about new drugs from these pharmaceutical representatives and they prescribe these new drugs routinely as they learn of them. Ketek is essentially brand new and is being pushed heavily. Whereas it is in the macrolide family - a family which includes third tier lyme choices like erythromycin/clarithromycin and Zithromax, logic dictates that it would work for lyme just like these other macrolides do. But that doesn't make it the best choice, and in fact it occurs no greater efficacy than the aforementioned antibiotics. I will forward the article from worstpills.org separately. Greg RE: Ketek..price Again, Ketek is a dangerous antibiotic (you can read all about it on worstpills.org) and it is not a good choice for lyme because the erythromycins work much better and are less expensive. Guest guest
Hi Greg, and too, I just have to say I have been on Ketek for awhile for Lyme & Mycoplasma & I am doing the best ever in 10 years of being sick and also as compared to when I was on any other abx, & I have been on many since I was dx in 2000! My doc has helped me so much & explained why it is a good choice for Lyme (don't ask me to try to repeat it!). Actually he wants me to stop it to see how I do & I don't want to!! None of them are really good for you on a long term basis, but the risk we have to take to try to get our lives back, unfortunately. Just my experience, that's all. Guest guest
you are using two very hard hitters and you may herx badly so be prepared ... eric <betneal@...> wrote: I remember we had several posts about Ketek. I am starting it in one week along with miniocin for bartenella. Anyone on any of these who can give me a heads up on side effects, herxes, anything I should look out for, and what time is best to take it? By the way it looks like the tindamax, zithromax and artemisinin hit the babesia hard. Time to hit the bartenella. Thanks Lizzie
Guest guest
Lizzie -- Dec 26. I started Ketek 400mg 2x/day combined with Amox 500mg 3x/day and increased to 100mg after two weeks. Initially I developed bad diarrhea. I take all abx with my meals. I introduced hard cheese ( at my LLMD's nurse recommendation) and chestnuts into my diet. My stools are better but still soft. So far I haven't developed any other side effects or herx reaction. Good luck! -- Lida > > I remember we had several posts about Ketek. Guest guest
Anyone who has been on Ketek should be aware that it has been withdrawn from the shelves. High liver enzymes in patients was apparently the reason. My daughter's doctor advised her to stop using it immediately and to throw away any remaining pills.
