Sara,I'm so glad you brought this up! I've really been struggling with this lately as well. Nothing ever really sounds good, and I just dont feel interested in food, and i find i am walking around hungry a lot. and then I end up starving, which predisposes me to just grabbing whatever is quick, food that i know wont make me feel the way i want to feel. but i look through cookbooks to try to find something that looks good and nothing ever appeals. restaurant food still appeals but that's not a good plan for me, financially, to do all the time. 

my acupuncturist says this has something to do with my spleen being cleansed or something, which is interesting, but he suggests just having some foods around that i am willing to eat. sounds good but i'm having trouble putting it into practice. 

i'm worried that i am setting myself up for a binge. abby

 

I've been reading in WWSHTB about the importance of eating as soon as you're hungry, and of keeping the food you want near you at all times in a food bag. They put it in terms of properly caring for yourself. Before I did this, I didn't realize how much I had been neglecting my hunger. I kind of took the approach of 'I'll get to it when it's convenient'. Here lately, I find I'm losing interest in eating. I'm finding it hard to satisfy my stomach hunger, because I don't seem to have much mouth hunger. But I really have to make sure that I satisfy that stomach hunger regardless, because it feels like my stomach hunger is truly just enough food to get by on. If I don't fully satisfy it (even if I'm not enjoying the food), then I start feeling weak and sick. It's actually kind of unpleasant. I've had moments like this in the past, too, under similar circumstances. Has anyone had this?

Hi Sara,

If I get hungry and then eat right away, the whole process feels really great; like I'm taking care of myself by allowing the hunger and then responding to it. But if I get hungry and then can't eat for another half hour or more, it begins to feel really unpleasant. I hate to be over-dramatic but it feels really tortuous to be absolutely starving and not be able to eat. In my dieting days I spent much time in starving mode and just forced myself to adapt to it, but now that my goal is to feed myself as soon as I get hungry, I don't want to adapt to starving! lol I hate it! And that's why I love the food bag because it really limits the times that I can't eat when I first feel hungry. If I absolutely just can't eat because I'm in the middle of a piano lesson, I do start to get a head ache and I feel light-headed.

I am sorry to say I can't relate to losing interest in eating; I've been the sort to treat food as my greatest comfort and best friend. I've actually tried to tone down my total joy at the prospect of eating when I'm hungry. I try to see food as pleasurable, but not as the best activity that life has to offer, lol :.)

i'm so glad you got WWSHTB because it's totally awesome. Do you have Overcoming Overeating by the same authors?

I read OO a couple of years ago, and liked it, but not like WWSHTB. I should

re-read it though. Sometimes things mean more to me on the second read.

Sara I too have been noticing that I am not as focused and even interested

strongly in food. I do find myself eating somethings without really wanting it

probably because I am currently making seasonal treats that I generally don't

have around. The neat part is that a few bites are enough whereas before I would

have picked at these until GONE. That's progress for sure.

I haven't made a 'food bag' because I am at home all the time (retired) so its

all available any time. But I do find that I am more likely to go for what is

readily available rather than take more time to cook/make something that I would

prefer.

My biggest difficulty to overcome is too get over slipping into not eating

because I feel I have been 'packing on' rather than adjusting down weight wise.

I am catching my bad body thoughts and eating as soon as I think about food

(first sign of hunger for me) as much as possible.

After I woke up with a very b ad case of BBF this morning I think I

should re-read that book again. Really. I hope it will make a

difference.
