Guest guest Posted December 10, 2009 Report Share Posted December 10, 2009 Two things have struck me in recent discussions on here. Firstly, how ageless everyone is in their online presence. As people have talked of their ages recently, I’ve been surprised at how different my perception of them has been compared with the number they have talked about. Secondly, how we are all influenced by the age that our loved ones died. My dad was in his early 40s when he died so I watched my DH very closely until he was past that age – as if my scrutiny or fear could do anything to influence it! Both observations have made me think about even if we’re not scale users anymore, we still get hung up on arbitrary numbers. Even funnier, I spend my life among them as I’m an accountant! There are plenty of associations for us to pack along in our lives without adding those EXternal 'should' ones like weight ;-) Many times I wish that Yahoo would allow a avatar and brief info signature for each member as that would help with remembering/associating us apart from each other. Self-acceptance and being comfortable in one's own skin can be so difficult, especially in our celebrity worshipping culture. (Still have trouble with that one, but I've decided to fight old age every step of the way, like the old Olay ads!) Don't think nor can I believe it is ever too late really to stop judging yourself by what we see on TV, in the movies and magazines. And instead appreciate the wonderful and unique individual, albeit imperfect, YOU that God created. I don’t know where I read it, but I do remember reading that no matter what the beautiful, the rich, the thin do, they will (if they are lucky) grow old, get wrinkles, lose muscle tone and like the rest of humanity eventually pass on. I find that weirdly comforting and a call to acceptance. I’m in my 40s and can now see my life being written on my body. Sure I sag, have varicose veins, grey hairs and the rest and am anticipating many more changes as I age, but bring it on! I say. Far better old, well lived and happy with memories than old, thin, scared of ‘losing’ to a younger version and not having had a chance of life – you get my drift Maybe I’ll feel different when I’m nearing 60 too, who knows! I do find it heart wrenching that so many in our group must have spent a large proportion of their lives disliking their bodies - another wake up call to me to love and appreciate what I have now, in all its flawed glory. After all, if we are facing inevitable decay and degradation, we’ll never again be as lovely as we are this second I didn’t intend to write most of that – it had to come out somehow!
