Callista,

Our daughter seems to be sensitive to flax oil resulting in more seizure

activity. Yes, coconut oil can be used as the primary oil (we did this with

our daughter for the first 6 months on the diet.....was living in the

Philippines where it is plentiful). It is an MCT oil so it can raise

ketones easier than most oils. You want to give it steady throughout the

day and not give it in one big dose. We did this one time (menue containing

coconut milk and coconut oil) and several hours later it shot her ketones

way up resulting in a sudden drop seizure (her worse head bang on

tile...thankfully the last awake seizure).

Hi,

Has anyone experienced any allergies to oils, in particular, olive

oil? My son's face seems to get red and itchy after he has some.

Also, for those of you that have used coconut oil, can this be used

as the main staple for fat or does it have to be used in small

amounts?

Thanks so much,

Callista (mom to Evan)

Callista,

I know someone who is allergic to olives.... so I suppose that is a possibility.

But, another thing is that some oils are processed with chemicals. Make sure

you're using a high quality extra-virgin olive oil...... you might want to

spend a little more and buy a brand like Spectrum, from a natural foods store.

Spectrum has both organic olive oil and regular (non-organic).... but I think

either one would be a good quality oil, not refined using any chemical solvents.

If you try that and he still reacts, you probably want to stay away from it.

Coconut oil is an excellent oil......pure, non-hydrogenated coconut oil, that

is. It probably shouldn't be his only fat source, though. It is a saturated fat

for one thing. When Katera was on the Keto diet, I used about half butter and

half oils......... and of that quantity of oil, I gave her about one third

coconut oil and one third olive oil...... the rest was flax oil, hemp oil,

sunflower oil or canola. I always bought my oils from the natural foods

store...... the regular grocery store cooking oils are generally refined with

solvents and have been exposed to heat which really affects their health value.

Stay completely away from all hydrogenated oils (aka " trans fats " ).

I have an article saved on the health benefits of coconut oil if you would want

me to forward it. Oh, and also....... it was my experience that coconut oil

made Katera's ketones run higher.... so we had to reduce ratio. She was

EXTREMELY healthy while eating coconut oil every day..... I don't know if that

was the reason but I do know that it's supposed to have anti-viral properties. I

also used a lot of canned coconut milk..... and mixed her other oils into it

(sweetened with a tidge of stevia).
