Here we go: I had on my first day for breakfast 3 soft boiled eggs. Then I had a few snacks like Jerky and Cashews. We had an early supper which was the Stir Fry out of the diet book and I ate a good portion of that. The next morning when I got up I was so weak I could barely make it out of bed. Just figured it was the change in food. So we had a big breakfast and I had two omelets made of 3 eggs each with Ham, Cheese and black Olives. It was around 11:30AM so I just had snacks in the early afternoon. For supper we had the creamy Mushroom Chicken dish out of the book. I had a salad made of lettuce, parmesan cheese and a little dressing. That is it. I have been loosing weight and I would like to keep it up but this morning when I got up I was so sick that just the thought of eating eggs was sending me to the bathroom to throw up. Do I need to eat more? I just had a 1/2 cup of milk and a toast so I could function today and I am feeling a bit better. I would like to find out what I did wrong so I can continue this. I don't have much weight to loose but I still want to give it a try. Oh, and I have taken a Centrum vitamin every day.

Thanks for all your help.

We are in the process of moving back to the states. We are in England right now and next Tuesday the movers will come and pick up our stuff. Hubby is in the Air Force.

Hi Marina,

Don't despair.

Just post exactly what you have had to eat ( if you can remember)

over the last 2 days.

If you were a coffee & cola addict, this could be hard at first.

If you are eating a lot of dairy & that was not part of your diet

before, that could make you feel unwell.

I have actually been feeling jittery today & craving things - so I

just blew it.

As it is evening here, I sent DH out to get some takeaway.

I'm going to start afresh tomorrow.

This doesn't happen very often to me.

I recall from your first post that you are returning to the States.

Whereabouts are you now?

What kind of weak are you feeling? Muscle weak or just generally tired?

Getting into ketosis and burning fat instead of carbs is a big adjiustment for our bodies. It is fairly normal to feel sort of icky for a few days as the glucose stores in our muscles get used us and the body starts burning fat instead. Try eating more frequently and have a couple of extra servings of veggies until you start feeling a bit better. Make sure you are eating enough fat so that your body has the fuel it now needs.

If you are feeling muscle weak, you may need some extra potassium or calcium/magnesium. As the glucose stores are burned, you are losing the water that has been stored with it. This can effect your electrolyte balance. Some people take potassium supplements (be careful not to overdo it though!), but I find that using Half Salt (half potassium, half sodium), works well enough for me.

Hi a,

Even though you ate a late breakfast, you seem to have missed out an

entire meal each day.

There is a meal called lunch.

I'm not trying to be funny here.

You need 3 main meals & some snacks.

Did you drink at least 8 glasses of water?

You should be having vegetables like brocolli, or cauliflower or

zucchini.

I know the meat situation in England is not the best.

When you had " breakfast " how soon was it after you got up?

If you had already been up for a couple of hours, that's too long to

wait.

I vitamin tablet a day is not enough on this WOE.

I go completely the other way.

I spend a fortune on vitamins.

Even my husband, who should, but doesn't follow this WOE, gets upset

if I don't put out his vitamins for hom.

He thinks I don't care about his well being.

Have you calculated the carbs on what you ate?

You know that you need to stay under 20 to lose, but that dsoesn't

mean cutting them out all together.

I don't know how many cashews you ate. If you must eat nuts, Brazils.

Macadamias or Almonds are a better alternative.

I personally can't stand olives.

I don't know if they are a good idea.

Try to get your carbs from green veggies like I said before.

If you don't like eggs, try tuna or salmon or some other type of fish.

I do hope that you feel better.

Just keep on trying.

Good luck

Have you tried fried eggs instead of boiled? I fry mine in a big dollop of

butter. That gives added taste and the fat acts as your energy and fills you

up.

a,

Hang in there!!! The one thing that you don't see unless you are looking

for it at the same time another newbie is starting Atkins is that most

people go through a day or two that they feel terrible. That is because

your body is using up the stores of glycogen and adjusting to your new way

of eating. Most of us also found out that if we could just not give in to

that weak and flu type feeling the next day we felt better than we had in

years! You are almost there, really you are. Trust me, don't give in now.

You say you are taking your vitamins, which is excellent. The one thing I

wasn't taking when I started that really helped me was a potassium

supplement. This WOE is so diuretic at first that many people find they

must take a potassium supplement or use lite salt to add extra potassium.

Another one that I have heard helps with the way you are feeling is a

calcium/magnesium combination. Are you taking either one of those? If not,

go get some today and I think you will feel better. Make sure that you are

eating enough LC foods to not be hungry also. You can do this!

I think you need to eat more veggies that are LC and more period. It sounds

like you are hardly eating. Try adding more meat and veggies, no more toast

and no more milk because that adds glycogen stores back and you may have to

go through that withdrawal process again to some extent. Next, I can't

blame you for not wanting more eggs. I hate eggs myself and wouldn't have

eaten nearly as many as you had in an entire year! That's just me, but if

you are tired of eggs, just eat something else. Also, try adding more fat

to you plan. That will help you feel full and when you are keeping carbs

low, fat is you friend, it helps you lose weight! It really does, but you

might not want to bulk up on fat today since you had milk and toast you are

probably over 20 carbs for today already.

Also get those extra supplements and drink lots of water.

Ok, I will give this another try. Yes, I did skip the lunch but I had

been snacking on things all day.I also ate right when I got up.

Guess I really didn't have enough veggies in my diet. Can't get to

the vitamin store until tomorrow.

I have not been hungry these two days just had these horrible

headaches and this weakness. At times I didn't even want to lift my

hand to brush my hair. Got two little kids to take care of so this is

something I really need to get fixed.

Could some of you that are starting out tell me what they are having

to eat so I can match this and see if I am better tomorrow?

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.

At the bottom of each message is a link to the " Turtle Menu. " This is an

EXCELENT menu plan with induction level carbs.

You WILL feel better soon; what you are feeling is the actual carb withdrawl,

and it is really nasty, but it is worth it in the long run. You might want to

write down exactly how you feel right now, use as many adjectives as you can to

make the description as vivid as you can. Keep this handy, so that as you get

further into the lifestyle and you become tempted by one of those nasty

cravings and the little carb demon says " ahhh, come on, just one slice of

cheese cake won't hurt... after all you HAVE been good for soooo long.... " You

will be able to take out your list read through it and recall just how bad you

are feeling right now... and then decide if in fact that cheese cake is worth

those feelings.... because you will have to go through it all again...

Just stick to your plan.... no more toast, or milk.... have a bit more dressing

in you salad, (make sure it isn't low fat) make some tuna with extra mayo....

have plenty of snacks ready.

You're going thru withdrawal, and it's a trip!

But worth it. Make sure you're eating enough,

try the " fat fast " I think it's called on the links,

and stay the course, as Bush used to say.

you know you're eating enough when you aren't hungry,

and when you don't have any cravings, but when you

have the energy to do what you need to do.

Bored with eggs for breakfast? That's the time I go

out and get myself a juicy steak for breakfast.

Yes!

The Fat Fast is supposed to be used only by those that are *extreamly*

resistant to going into ketosis...

Of course when you think of it... when you are getting almost all fat, of

course you will show ketosis... but it may be showing a " dietary " fat loss

instead of a " body " fat loss... does that make sense?

are you possibly hypoglycemic? it sounds like your blood sugar levels are too low and perhaps you need to try to divide your food up into 5-7 smaller meals evenly spaced throughout the day....??

I have no idea. How can I find out?

I have ate much better today. I had fried zucchini and cheese and for supper we had coleslaw, salad and I had the stir fry again. Drank a lot of water and Crystal Light tea. Will see how I feel in the morning.

The reason the fat fast works for is that it gets you into ketosis. For

metabolically resistant, it really doesn't matter how much is dietary vs

body fat. Their first obstacle is to burn fat. If you can't get into

ketosis [and you're not losing], you can't confirm that you have switched

from carb-based metabolism. If your body thinks it is burning carbs for

fuel, and you are eating a reduced carb diet, you may start cannibalizing

protein [58% convertible to glucose], including muscle and vital organs. It

is really important that you eat enough protein/fat and few enough carbs

that you get your metabolism switched to fat burning.

It is FAR too soon for a to worry about the fat fast. No one else

should be doing it, unless they are truly metabolically resistant [it is not

a shortcut back to ketosis from cheating], and should only do it for a few

days.

Hang in there a! I felt terrible the first several days too. Those withdraws are not fun at all. I was just so happy to not only be eating so much but eating all that fat I kept thinking if the scales shows me this works I can get through this! Listen to the pro's on the list, they definitely know how to keep ya going!

Correct.

BUT, fat (not the fat fast) *is* your friend during induction. Every time

I go on induction I buy some cream cheese and wrap some kind of thin,

flavorful protein around it-- such as lox, or i just found a source for

uncured salami (I'm one of the nitrite sensitive ones here). If you can

have lunch meats I imagine those work too... I also make sure to have some

bacon with those eggs, and cook them in plenty of butter. I generally do

this for breakfast and afternoon snack for the first 3-4 days of

induction; it gets me into the pink so fast and seems to help with that

whole withdrawal/low blood sugar thing as well. Normal (for induction)

lunch and dinner with meat + salad or meat + LC veggie. After 3-4 days I

can't stand all that thick cream cheese anymore and once I've seen the

pink on the ketostix I'm no longer motivated, and I go back to regular

induction.

I've never done the fat fast, this is just the method I've come up with

after doing this induction thing 8 or 10 times. hmmm. it's not a good

sign to have this much experience with induction, is it? At least it's

" no big deal " enough that I come right back after a bad day.

like the party today when some lovely burgers were served hot off the

grill and nobody blinked when i took just the patty and not the bun (this

was a party with coworkers, and they've seen me pick through enough

lunches not to flinch at this behavior of mine). i noticed they were

heavily seasoned... but then after I'd finished my snack-size patty, I

heard people talking about veggie burgers, and I suddenly remembered that

the host's girlfriend is vegetarian! that was probably a 19 gram mistake

if I recall correctly, and I'll be watching the ketostix tomorrow to see

if I'm still okay.

Just follow those turtle menu plans and you will do fine. Feel free to

substitute any protein for the eggs, I avoid those at all costs, eggs are

awful. That's why they are a four letter word in the plural. Still trying

to figure out why exercise has more than four letters. LOL

With all do respect to Donna, you need the turtle menu plan not the fat

fast. The fat fast is a last resort for those who are extremely

metabolically resistant. I don't think this applies to you.

Are you serious? You take 27 different pills each day? Have you always done

this or is this something recent when you started this WOE?

There is no way I could take 27 pills each day unless my life depended on it

(and I don't personally think mine does depend on it just because I follow a

low carb WOE).
