Guest guest
Sue, we haven't seen that one yet, but we did watch King Corn which was also an eyebrow lifter to say the least. The great % of corn grown is not EATABLE by humans or even animals until it is 'processed'. And that stuff gets put into so many other 'foods' that it boggles the mind. No wonder the meat we buy has a 'soft' texture - no muscle tone from NO exercise - just 'tissue'. We have been slowly doing more personal gardening and after seeing that will plant even more next year. We are what we eat?!? Take care, Katcha IEing since March 2007 > > Has anyone else seen this documentary? My husband and I watched the DVD version on the night after Thanksgiving. We were both shocked by what we saw and pleasantly surprised to learn that we already follow many of the 'Food, Inc.' suggestions for preparing, growing and buying safer food. > > If you're interested in more than just the taste or calorie content of the food you eat, see this documentary. You may be surprised or even shocked when you learn how big food industry conglomerates control how many farmers raise and grow our food. Guest guest
I haven't seen or heard anything about a documentary. What's the name, Sue? My 22 year old daughter has been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for about 4 years now and quickly released all her excess weight during the process. She went from a tight size 16 to a size 2/4 now. I can hardly believe it. Of course, she's had braces on which just made it hard for her to eat much anyway during that same time period. But, she looks amazing. I tried the vegetarian route but my hubby is a definite meat and potatoes guy so I didn't want the hassle of making 2 meals all the time. Any suggestions? Has anyone else seen this documentary? Guest guest
Hi Sharon: The name of the documentary is FOOD, INC., just like the subject line of my post. I wouldn't recommend going vegetarian or vegan merely to lose weight. Restricting whole categories of food just to lose weight can influence episodes of binge eating those restricted foods. That's what most weight loss diets do. However, if you have difficulties with digesting meat or have diagnosed food allergies to any meats or other protein sources, you might benefit from trying a vegetarian or vegan diet. Because I already had diagnosed food allergy restrictions for gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, cane sugar, vanilla and nutmeg, I didn't want to eliminate more food categories. However the documentary 'Food, Inc.' showed how the corn and soybean industries dictate how many farmers grow those crops with unsafe techniques. That documentary also revealed how large poultry and meat companies forced plants to use unsanitary practices to produce bigger animals more quickly. After being diagnosed and treated for 3 intestinal bacteria, a parasite and a fungus during the past 4 years, I don't want to risk more food born bacteria from unsanitary farming practices. So we intend to increase the number of vegan meals we eat and cut waaay back on poultry and meats until we can find guaranteed safe sources of those meats, which means grown organic, free range and free of antibiotics. Fortunately our local food coop offers just those kinds of meats, but at a higher price. So we will consume those higher priced, but safer meats sparingly, and consume more inexpensive vegan meals to stay within our grocery budget. Guest guest
Thanks for the info, Sue. I wasn't really thinking of going the whole vegetarian route for just the reasons you outlined. I'm very proud of my daughter and she did it initially for animal rights consciousness reasons but after she saw the health benefits, that became a big motivator. West Virginia is SO far behind the times. Don't have a food coop anywhere nearby. Wish we did. I'd learn to stretch the already tight budget to eat healthier. Sometimes my vegetarian daughter tells me some info about how animals are treated/handled during the entire process before they get to my table and it makes me sick. Many blessings to you! Guest guest
Hi Sue,I don't know what area you live in, but Open Space Meats ships meat overnight to California, Oregon & Nevada...they do not use hormones or antibiotics. He has very large pastures, and says it would cost too much to certify every pasture organic, so I took him at his word that he has only organic meat. I don't think he is any pricier than our local organic grocery store. Something to try if you are in those areas. I have been thinking of trying it because he does deliver in my area. http://openspacemeats.com/online-store.php(Hope it was ok to post that!) Guest guest
Thanks, . Unfortunately I live just beyond those areas. However, I found a local source of free range, antibiotic free, organic poultry. 'Hormone free' is not an issue with poultry, because hormone use in poultry was outlawed years ago. I'm not so concerned about beef or other forms of meat, because I don't digest those as easily. I'm really glad that Food, Inc. motivated my husband to eat more vegan meals and predominantly local foods. I'm concerned about food born bacteria after suffering through intestinal infections from 3 different bacteria, a parasite and a fungus. I can more easily digest vegan foods. So I'm excited about persuading my husband to eat less meat based entrees. Guest guest
I'm glad you found a source, Sue. Yes, I'm aware of poultry not having hormones...guess I should have clarified that Open Space Meats is beef only, lol. How wonderful that your hubby is willing to try more local fresh foods! I love that IE has given me such an awareness of flavor and how important it is to me to have the freedom to choose the most delicious, good foods...I often end up with fresh local because it just tastes so good!
