Guest guest
but using this resource while hospitalized could have negative repercussions down the road. *********** Sue, I understand where you are coming from, I have been there too.... But... I totally disagree. But being " outside " the system in my work as a Risk Manager has helped me understand this more fully. God knows I have been IN THE SYSTEM as a patient and a healthcare provider for a long time but I got a whole different read on it being " outside " the system, teaching doctors and patients how not to get sued. This has really prepared me for the world of the other side and patient advocacy rather than physician advocacy! The Patient Bill of Rights was developed so that patients can understand AND act upon those rights.... More later ... but in some institutions there are immediate grounds for dismissal of an employee who shows predigest against an individual who wants to discuss (key word discuss not scream about) their rights. Truly, It is all in the way it is approached. The patient bill of right is only useful when you know about it, understand it and are willing and able to go thru the right sources to get THE PERSON who can effect change. I am looking into the methods in which a patient can get what they need because they can talk intelligently to the persons or person AHEAD OF TIME and/or at the time or after. For example, the last time I was hospitalized in a Catholic hospital I made an appointment with the Head of nurses and spoke to Sister about my past experiences. People are always horrified to here about how a patient was treated and will make all efforts to do better than that OTHER hospital. Information is powerful, but in the health care arena it is ESSENTIAL. Information that will not just place the patient at the mercy of the Health Care industry but give them ammunition that will assist (or at least alert them) to have the best medical care possible. My mom used to say that honey catches more flies..... this is true with health care more than any other industry I have been involved it. It is just that we are so frustrated, mad, hurt, sick and simply tired to fighting that we are angry (which DOES NO GOOD) at the system and most importantly the individuals who have no control. That is the first and most deadly mistake any patient can make! I will get to this a bit later.. It is just important to know that a very long time was spent on this and it has helped very many individuals. And I must say it has been helpful WHEN THE PATIENT brings it to the institutions attention not the other way around. Debbi
