Jeanie,

I hope you post a copy of that essay, I would love to read it and know

what your professor thinks of it. DAMN is it just that easy, Diet and

exercise, why the hell didnt someone tell me??????????????????

And to think we went through a huge surgery cause no one told us it was

as easy as diet. WOW

I am very nervous and excited all at once. I have a few reservations

about surgery in general and am dealing with that. I am thankful

that I have the support of my wonderful husband and children. My Mom

is even coming so that she can be here for the surgery and recovery

period. I am having this done Lap and am hoping that all goes well.

Waiting for a date is the worst part.

I agree...people on this site are very helpful and kind! :)

Good for you for being aware that you can't fix eating issues alone, without

dealing with emotional issues as well. I hope you find as much support from

this group as I do!

Welcome Amy. Your intro sounds pretty much like most I've read here so I think

you will find that you are in the right place alright. It will help you bunches

if you can get a copy of either the Intuitive Eating book or another one to help

you get acquainted with this process. Its really all about re-learning to listen

to the INternal signals that you already have, although these may be repressed

for you at this time. There's a book list in the Files section at the group site

and you ought to be able to find at least one or two of these at your local

library to help you start ASAP.

You may also benefit by reading back a few days or so in the posts here too.

After that, post your questions, concerns and whatever you want regarding this

excellent change in your life. Only one thing is not allowed here - diets! ;-)

BEST to you, Katcha

Welcome, Amy.

I think you made a smart choice by joining this group.

It might help to read the book Intuitive Eating. You are exactly right, the

diets wont work because they dont address emotional eating. Intuitive Eating

embraces your whole self so that eventually and quite naturally you wont need to

use food for comfort. You will find a balance in your life.

Make sure you take time for yourself. Your kids would want it for you. It will

help you be more " available " for them.

Warm Regards,

Deb

Hello everyone. I'm new to the group and just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Sharon. I'm 49 years old and would love to release approximately 100 pounds in order to reach my ideal weight and be in better health. I live in the country with my husband and our "fur children". The kids are all grown and live elsewhere. I have a very stressful job and am definitely a comfort/stress eater as well as a mindless eater. So, I'm working on those things. Just started the book over the holiday weekend and am looking forward to a lifetime without dieting and learning to listen to the signals by body gives me about when to eat and, perhaps more importantly, when to stop.

Welcome Sharon! The IE book is

fabulous!

For me it’s easier to hear my body’s signals about when to eat.

I’m working on the signals for when to stop. I’m a binge eater – and right now choosing to eat meals and snacks without bingeing

is key. Ideally I’d like to get to where I’m eating for “true” hunger only – and not taste hunger...and stopping when satisfied. But I’m taking it in baby steps.

I REALLY want to lose some weight – and I get panicked feelings all the time “I should just go back to dieting”....but then I remind myself to stop and take a deep

breath....really give IE a try.....really learn to appreciate and like my body

as it is now.....and realize I would honestly and truly rather lose only .5

pound a month for the next 5 years....than to be plagued with the bingeing

monster and do what I have been doing the last almost 2 years (gain 5, lose 10,

gain 15, lose 5, gain 10, lose 2, gain 5, lose 5.....etc.) One binge and one

diet followed by the next! It’s true insanity.

Welcome! You’ve found a great place to be.

Thanks for the welcome and encouragement, Jolene. I remember when I was in high school and used to eat whenever I was hungry and truly ate only what I wanted. My mother used to ask if I was okay because she hadn't seen me eat for a couple of days. Then somehow (maybe when I went out into the working world) I lost the ability to receive signals from my brain very clearly and began eating by the clock. After that, the comfort eating started, then chaotic stress-leaving eating, etc., etc. Oh, to be able to go back in time and right that wrong. But, I start now and will just have to be happy with the baby steps, like you said. The dieting absolutly has contributed to the 100 excess pounds that I'm lugging around daily. Looking foward to this

journey along with all my new friends. :-)

Thank you, Laurie. Yes, it will be interesting to see just how I deal with life without the comfort and support of food if I'm not actually hungry. My hubby and I have known each other for 18 years, but have just been married a little over a year (we each chose the wrong person 1st time around ... LOL). So our children grew up together and think of each other more as cousins ... it was an easy transition to our step-family. Since the kids live in TX, FL and OH while we're in WV, we've allowed our Golden Retriever, Yellow Lab mix and mostly ferel cat (mother-in-law caught her and gave her to me as a kitten but she's only tame when she wants to be) to become our "children".

Blessings,

Sharon

Hi Sharon,

I love dogs and cats, but I rent a house so can have only cats. My cat, tommy, is a feral cat also; it took one year for me to be allowed to pet him, lol, and about 6 years before I could pick him up!! But now he is so affectionate. I have Allie, who was not feral and she's super tame, but a bit moody about whether she wants attention and petting. I am super tempted, for Christmas, to adopt one more kitten, but Allie and Tommy are just now getting along, and I'm not sure I want to do anything that may spoil that. What do you think? I am very, very tempted (like a kid, lol).

Oh, Laurie, you sound like me when it comes to animals. Here's my story (and advice for what it's worth). I am a property manager and a manager at a sister site knew that my hubby wasn't fond of our cat because he likes a cat that will sit on your lap to be petted, etc. A gorgeous cat (looks like a Nebelung which is quite rare ... a beautiful steel gray color medium length coat with emerald eyes) literally wandered into her office one day. So, naturally she called me thinking we would like to give him a home. We already have the 2 dogs and the ferel cat. So, I asked him just so he could say "no" and be the bad guy. But, he said, "Sure, Honey. If you want to do that, it's fine with me". I couldn't believe how he laid in my arms the entire

drive home and didn't even try to jump out of them when we were met at our front door by the 2 dogs jumping all over the place. The cat seemed to look at them and say "Hey guys. I'm your new brother." (LOL .. Yes, I humanize my animals! LOL!) I expected him to hide for a few days as any cat does in a new environment, but he didn't. He ate right away and was just a happy camper in his new home. Then, Sweet Pea (the ferel cat) came in the house and let him know that she was not going to be a fan of his. Of course, we thought she'd make up to him in a few days when she decided he wasn't going away. Anyway, we've tried him out for 2 weeks and found that while he's quite settled in and has made himself at home, he started spraying. My hubby put our Christmas tree up Friday and by Sunday we found the skirt saturated with cat urine (definite ammonia smell ... not the dogs). And, when we realized that

Sweet Pea was outside all night long when this obviously happened, we decided that the new cat had to go back to the apartments and hopefully find a new home. So, while I understand your desire to get a new "fur kid" (my mother-in-law has 8 indoor cats but you wouldn't know and countless outdoor ferels that she feeds and waters daily so she'd understand us too. LOL), I would probably say leave well enough alone and enjoy the 2 that you already have. Keep the peace! :-)

Blessings,

Sharon

Hi Sharon,

Wow, the new cat was super comfy but very unfortunate that he started spraying. Maybe he was just too comfortable!

Boy, if you knew that I once had 11 cats, you'd think I was looney tunes!!! I learned my lesson though because I had to find good homes for most of them when I had to move. And it was crazy having that many because I had five litter boxes and I was scooping two times a day which wasn't really enough!!! I did that in my twenties when I was young and not so brilliant. I'm 46 now and know my limit is two or three at most. But cats are each so individual and each so beautiful; they are nearly irresistable, lol.

I do like your advice because that's also where my common sense is leading; my two are starting to get along better and why ruin the start of something nice?

Thanks for your email; I enjoyed reading it very much.
