I will admit it. I get so nervous that Holden gets all upset and makes it almsot impossible. The closest that I can get to doing it in public while feeling comfortable is when I am in the car. So, when we're out...and Holden gets hungry...I go to the car. I really want to become more comfortable and able to just sit down on a bench at the mall and " whip it out " , because I really believe in what Tammy and some others have said---that it is our only form of advertising...but it's proving to be such a challenge. I don't know if it's a self-image problem, or what. But I just can't get comfortable. ~

This will help you see how very little actually shows. Plus try to remember most of the time people don't pay much attention to a mother sitting on a bench. : ) I used to be nervous nursing in public but then I just decided I was going to just do it. Once I did it a few times and became more comfortable it became a piece of cake!! : ) In my previous post, I mentioned being able to nurse Philip while walking around. Well, one day a friend and I were shopping in the mall and Philip wanted to nurse. So, I picked him up, latched him on and started nursing him all while strolling through the mall without missing a beat. My friend looked over and was SHOCKED to find me nursing!! You should've seen the look on her face! She's not a bf'ing mom and she just kept saying over and over, I can't believe you were able to do that! You're amazing!! LOL It was so funny! Anyhow, back to helping you... Do you have any nursing shirts? I've found that these really made it easier for me and made me feel more comfortable. Now, it doesn't matter so much but they did help in the beginning. If you don't have any nursing shirts you can just wear button up shirts and un button from the bottom. In the winter I always wear button up shirts and if I'm going out somewhere sometimes I'll wear a nursing " shell " underneath. There are lots of little tips you can learn to make it easier and more comfortable for you... You'll figure it out. Just remember practice makes perfect!! : ) Let me know if I can help you any more!! Guest guest
I'm with you . I have a very hard time nursing in public. As I get ready to leave the house I think " well I have his food with me if he gets hungry " but then if he gets hungry I just can't do it and go to a dressing room or the car. Guest guest
Dana~ Thanks for all the suggestions. You're right. I do just need to get over it. Gradually, I guess ;-) Once I get Holden latched on, I'm okay- it's just the " latching on " part that's scary---it's hard to be discreet when I have to pull his lip out. I don't have any nursing shirts as of yet- haven't found any in the maternity stores that I like. I did, however, get a catalog from Lee and plan to have my mom make me at least a few t-shirts. Again, thanks for the tips. I really appreciate your help ;-) I'll keep ya posted. ~

But now I don't have a second thought about it. The more tense you feel about it the more upset and frantic he is going to get. My advise is when you think he is GETTING hungry (but not starved yet) find a nice quiet bench at a mall or where get him out nice and calm and just relax and latch him on and be proud of yourself. If you try to put it off he will have a major fit which makes you 100 times more upset about nursing in public. I can relate. Once you get the hang of it you'll never go abck to the car. Try the net, there are some great sites out there, and if you want a start, I have some in my bookmarks..
