Guest guest
Amy I have the same hyper- gag reflex ...and very sensative throat /back of the tounge ect ...this can happen as a result of some dammage to the nerve much like neuropathic pain can follow some compression dammage to other nerves ....and the medications used for neuropathic pain like neurontin or tegratol may help some . I recently discussed just this with my very good neurologist ...he sugested too that seeing a speach therapist for swollowing intervention therapy would be a good idea ...one thing thats simple but may help ...suck on /chew icechips for a few mins/eat a popsicle -icecream or use a frozen metal spoon ....to help numb your mouth /throat some before brushing your teath ect ... and avoid dry foods ..add sauces . that actually has helped me some when its acting up at its worst for me . Do discuss getting some swollowing /speach therapy with your primary care or neurologist /physiatrist ...it can be a true big problem if it leads to aspriation /choking /gagging and severe coughing like it has for me ! sarah in paradise
