Hi, I'm new here and thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Aidan, and I'm a single mom with four kids. Yes, I have alot of stress in my life! I'm learning a lot about coping and beinghappy "anyway", not just around food issues.Some of my history with food. My mother has struggled with her weightsince she was a child. So I grew up immersed in diets, binging, severeguilt over food choices- my mom really has this stuff running herlife. I have always had the diet mentality too, though until I hadfour kids, I was very slim; so it never seemed like a problem. But itIS a problem, and always was! Even though I was slim, that depended onfactors like the work I did, which was very physical, and keepingmyself out and busy so I never experienced eating from boredom orloneliness. I don't want my own kids to have an unhealthy relationshipwith food and with their own bodies. My struggles right now are around eating unconsciously- I eat all day,every day. I also soothe myself with treats. The guilt keeps me fromwanting to exercise, and I'm struggling to find hope and themotivation to care for myself. I'm used to that coming from the desireto be slim like I used to be, and thinking that if I could just workup some more self discipline, I would lose weight, learn to lovemyself (but not till I lose the weight!), and be happy.I haven't read Intuitive Eating all the way through, but so far I likewhat I've read. I am hoping to get some real-life advice and supportthrough this group. Thanks for having me!Aidan------------------------------------

Hello everyone, I just came across this group over the weekend and have been reading a few posts. I thought I would introduce myself and tell you a little about me. I'm in my early 30's with my first baby on the way. I'm happily married and have a great job (self-employed). My weight is something that I've struggled with since childhood. I was a very obese girl/adolescent, but when I moved into junior high started to exercise and "eat right" (10 grams of fat a day!?!). I soon went the other way--though I never became anorexic, I definitely had disordered feelings around food and my body. I still have some of these feelings. I first read Geneen Roth's books in 2001. That was the time when I "legalized" foods, or at least attempted to. Since that time, I have definitely felt more comfortable with food and my body. In fact, I would say I've had long periods of time where food just wasn't much of an issue for me. Getting pregnant however, has been a real challenge in the weight/body issues area. I've read so much on what is healthy for the baby to have, and not have. Sweets should be avoided at all costs. Not too much salt. Tons of fruits and veggies. Lots of protein. No junk food. Good grief!I did my best throughout my pregnancy (I'm expecting any day now) and still gained a fairly large amount of weight. What has been bothering me most though, is that my obession with food and all the things I "can't" have is back. That makes me really, really upset because I thought that that portion of my life was over. I have started the Thin Within program (a Christian based IE program) as well as reading "Healing from Within". I'm also going to try to get a copy of "Intuitive Eating" which I read years ago. I have been trying to return to eating intuitively for the past week and have already noticed huge changes. The cravings are about 1/3 what they've been for the past months. I feel more content and less anxious. And I feel hopeful that I will someday get back to that place where food isn't so important to me. So, that's a rather long-winded introduction! Thanks for letting me join your group. And if I don't post back right away it may be because I've gone into labor! :)-Joy------------------------------------

an 'enlarged heart' since she was around 80+ years old. The dame made it to 102

years only losing weight in the last couple of years of her life!

Yup, yup and yup-- my grandmother lived to 92 and was overweight all her life.

Statistics can sometimes seem like unnecessary scare tactics to me.

I do however have a friend who is a reflexologist. She laughs at the high blood pressure chlosteral figures (sp. wrong sorry!) they say are dangerous as her Mother who lived to 102 had the highest figures in that regard that any doctor would ever want to see and had no health problems. Her Mother stayed instead in the loving health care hands of her Daughter rather than the medical profession and lived a long and healthy life.

I've been reading about how keeping higher levels of Vitamin C in the blood

stream helps to 'condition' the vessels, even negating placate build up. We

humans do NOT produce our own Vitamin C - must get it from foods. Bears have

cholestrol rates of over 400 and they don't have heart attacks like we do

probably because their bodies make high levels of Vit. C for themselves.

All that said, I think no matter what 'size' one is, if one has 'encouraged'

factors like shortness of breath (smoking or extreme size constriction

conditions) and has a family history of heart attacks, especially at under 60

years of age, then medical information could be useful. But to take statistics

and use these as 'the word of God' for each and everyone with one or two of the

'factors' seems excessive to me and too much 'quick/single cause-effect' to me.

(sounds like diet mentality too ;-)

Hello,

I found this group by googling Christian and weight loss. I was led to the Thin Within program. As I was reading about it I found a link to someone's blog. They were discussing their combination of different ideas and programs and mentioned this group. So, now I'm here.

I am very intrigued by the fact that it never occurred to me that we had our own internal messaging system for when and how much to eat. I mean, I hate counting calories! I guess it just never dawned on me that within my own body there was this message I could listen to for when to eat. I love this concept and feel somewhat dense for not realizing it myself.

Our bodies are quite the miracle, huh? So, intuitive eating is just listening to your hunger signal and then eating until you're satisfied but not stuffed, right? Is that it in a nutshell?

I must admit that my biggest fear about intuitive eating is how often I'll get to eat. You see, I love to eat. If I ate only when I felt hungry, I might only get to eat once a day. I don't know...I've never tried it. How about you all? How often do you actually get hungry?

I was thining about my kids and their eating habits. They often come to me at times I find inconvenient because they are not " meal times " saying they are hungry. They snack on something and then go about their business. Then I blame them not eating at meal times on this snacking. I am rethinking this now. They actually DO listen to thier bodies. They are not always hungry at the exact times I serve meals. They do not eat willingly during a time they don't feel hungry. Eating is not " fun " to them like it is to me. They truly eat because they're hungry and then move on to play. Eating is more like the " play " in my day, I guess. I'd rather be doing that because everything else I'm doing (save from sitting on the computer) is work. Does that make sense?

Well, I'm rambling. It's nice to put these thoughts out here. I will be 36 years old tomorrow. My husband of 11 years decided to join the Army National Guard in Nov. 2008. He is currently away doing his Initial Active Duty Training. So, he is getting very fit and has lost over 50 lbs. I would like to lose weight before he comes home this October. I have two kids aged 11 and 8. We homeschool. I work part-time as a clinical microbiologist. It's nice to meet you all. I look forward to learning more.

Welcome Bobbi, I can understand the feel being big when someone a partner who is

not. However bear in mind you got to love your body that would possible success

lose weights when you are starting to listen your body as your children did.

Even though every children are not same as others how they response to foods.

As my mother did same with my sister and myself. Until that foster mother had

ruined it completely though I am slowly go back as I once was.

So, be patient with yourself Bobbi.

So far this group has been fantastic in sharing. I have learned more from this group than any other. School is not forever, only 6 months and then I hope be employed again. I sometimes wonder if I am doing too much at one time. School, Budgeting, Dieting and Exercising. The walks help me to calm down and stretch my back. I was in a accident in March and April (I was rear ended) and I get back pain. When stressed it is worst. I am not sure which area should be priority. Everything seems important at this time.

Lora, you may want to check out Overcoming Overeating, especially their suggestion of carrying a food bag. It seems that when one thinks about it for yourself, you manage to find 'portable' foods that you love so that you CAN eat when (body) hungry.

Welcome , I think you will find good input here. Most members have also

struggled with various methods and find IE to be what they were seeking. Being

able to 'get' this early in your life is big bonus - you have less 'stuff' to

wade thru and disengage from you life than we who have lived without IE for many

more years.

Do go to the group site and open the Book List that is found in the Files

section (left column) there. Many of these books are available at libraries.

Hi,

My name is Cheri. I was looking for a group to share things with that

understood where I was coming from. I am currently going through the

" Don't Diet, Live It " workbook and realized that I don't share much of

myself with most people.

I started intuitive eating years ago and got away from it, but I have

found that that is the only way I can be more peaceful with food. So, I

need to get back to working on it, and Lord willing, accomplish eating

that way on a regular basis. I am over 100 pounds over weight.

I have been married for coming up on 17 years, have an 8 year old

daughter, and we go to the Church of Christ. My daughter and I are

involved in Girl Scouts. I am blessed with being a stay at home

mom/wife. We live in San Diego, CA.
