I recently started taking a product called Moducare

and actually can feel it working. Its suppose to

balance back the immune system. I bought it at

http://www.vitaminshoppe.com for a great price.

For more info go to http://www.moducare.com

Also, I recently posted a question regarding

Proamatine for low blood pressure. Has anyone else

ever taken it??

My husband takes it for a totally different reason than cancer. He has an

autoimmune disorder that has resulted in a bile duct disease, primary

sclerosing cholangitis.....so he has started on that a few weeks ago and

does feel a difference in the way he feels....I have noticed a difference in

the way he has been also since starting it. For the first few days he was

tired but that passed and from there it has been on the upswing.

Hi Jill -

Yes, I have been taking Moducare for about 6-7 months.

I did notice an improvement in energy and reduction

in infections at first. I'm discontinuing it now

because my doctors want me to try to reduce the total

load on my liver (my ALT function is elevated), so I'm

trying to take a baseline of meds and supplements to

ease liver stress.

I think Moducare is a safe product and I didn't

experience any side effects with it. Now I'll have to

see how I do without it!

Good luck! Jennie

Hi Vilik;

I haven't tried it but I've just read " The Immune System Cure: Nature's Way

To Superpowered Health " by Lorna R. Vanderhaeghe and J.D. Bouic.

Lorna is co-author of Udo's Erasmus' book " Fats That Heal, Fats That Kill " .

I'd highly recommend this book to anyone. Seems sterols and sterolins will

alleviate a wide range of problems. Moducare Sterinol, a blend and the

authors' choice, is about $75 a bottle in Canada. They've got to get the

price down or few people will look at it.

Dear Duncan,

Lorna and Udo are good friends, but she didn't

coauthor his book on fats and oils. It was actually his

PhD thesis on nutrition, originally.

She coauthored the book on sterolins, as you have said.

Hey :

What happened to the sun?

(it was sooo gorgeous yesterday!)

:>(

Anyway, I noticed in the subject line " Moducare " , but I didn't read the

posts. However, I did do a search on " Moducare " , and read some incredible

info on this product, which is made of STEROLS and STEROLINS from PINE.

My question is - doesn't Dr. D have a product made from pine also? I wonder

if it has the same STERO/by-products?

Best wishes,

Hi All -

I have been on Moducare on and off for about two

years. I feel more energetic when I am on it and

don't get the butterfly rash or visible crimson

cresent on my face when I take it. When I stop the

rash comes back within two weeks and my energy level

drops dramatically. That's all the evidence I have

that it is working but it is enough for me - I take it

all the time now, two pills when I get up an hour

before breakfast and two pills at bedtime on an empty

stomach.

How do you feel this Moducare has helped you with dealing with

I don't know - although it comes up as a recommendation a lot. I

would think the only way one could clean a liver would be to alter

one's diet. I've read about " liver " flushes but never tried one.

I am feeling a whole lot better than when I was first diagnosed.

However, I'm doing so many alternative things - it's hard for me to

say that the improvement is just because of moducare. And I don't

think moducare can just be used on it's own.

Apparently, moducare is good for inflammatory conditions. Sterols and

sterolins (plant nutrients) such as moducare, can regulate the immune

function and supposidly can control autoantibody reactions.

All of us benefit from cleansing or detoxing regularly. There are lots of

different methods out there, too. There is a Dr. Cabot who has a book

called The Liver Cleansing Diet which would be more gradual and not as hard

on your system as a liquid fasting cleanse (which I've done many many times,

but not in the past few years). I have thought of trying that - but you

give up butter for a while and I have to work myself up for it. Its a

program for several weeks at a time of a certain way of eating. You can

also eat raw for at least a day a week (nothing but - cleansing fruits and

veggies only). In fact - I think that is at least what I will do! I am not

up to a full blown cleanse and am frankly not in the mood to flush (have

before). There are ways to cleanse on the websites at the bottom of every

email from this list, too. Also Milk thistle and dandelion are a couple of

herbs that are good for the liver. There are others. Jeanie

Patty,

more info on moducare here www.moducare.com ... but watch out you may

all fall into a big whole as the site includes advertísing... and

we all know about the powers of that, don't we (so what's to worry

about).

There you can find links to research and medline abstracts.

Plant sterols are what you may find in olive oil, the fatty/waxy

components. There is a lot of high powered medical research done as

they are used to lower cholesterol and have recently been found to be

benficial in Alzheimer's Disease. Usually they are administered in

their chemical form - I think the drug is called sitosterol - a

freaky version was this non fat olestra stuff. I translated several

study reports on this from the uni where I work in the last couple of

months. It's a promising field but medical study so far has been

carried out mainly in animal models (rats and guinea pigs). I have

not found any links on plant sterols and autoimmunity but I will ask

the sterol man at the uni when I see him the next time. My own doctor

(who is a general doctor as well as a qualified naturopath) is

reluctant and wants to wait for more research to show whether immune

balance is differenzt fom immune enhancing - not something desirable

for our compromised immune systems. Anyway, my staple fat is olive

oil and olives, the only source of fat I can digest without trouble.

Hope this helps,

Sophie, Thanks, this is interesting. I excerpted some of the data from the

site. It certainly looks like they are trying to be responsible, I was first

under the impression this was an alternative medicine, it looks like a

natural medication [like urso/actigall which is a synthetic black bear

bile].

It says it it for:

" Daily stress

Runny nose, itchy eyes

Minor joint pain / stiffness

Fatigue

Minor digestive problems

Feeling run down

Dizziness / brain fog

Frequent urination

Premature aging

Mild depression

Slow recovery / over-training "

It then says:

" If you said 'yes' to any of the above, your immune system needs to be

restored, strengthened and balanced " .

I don't like the STRENGTHENED...

.............But then there is an interesting article......................

''Autoimmunity – when your body turns on itself'' by Bouic, PhD,

Healthy Immunity First Edition

Lupus, psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis are just a few of the many

autoimmune diseases that cause debilitating illness. Until recently,

treatment options were few and many had serious side effects. Standard

medical treatments keep the immune system suppressed, increasing the risk of

cancer and infectious diseases.

Now a simple complex of plant fats has changed all that. Sterols and

sterolins now offer relief of autoimmune symptoms. Inflammation, pain and

destruction of body tissues are stopped in their tracks by these powerful

plant nutrients.

Reseachers believe that stress, viral infections, poor nutrition and

pollution play a role in the development of autoimmune diseases causing the

immune system to become confused and attack the very body it is supposed to

protect.

Complex sequences of events take place on a minute-to-minute basis as our

immune system protects us from invaders. Several important cells make up

this system, but two types of T helper cells, Th-1 and Th-2, determine

whether we become ill or stay healthy. When Th-1 cell function is low our

ability to fight off cancer, bacteria and viruses is reduced. And when Th-2

cell function is high our production of antibodies is increased and

secretion of Interleukin-6, a powerful inflammatory factor, also increases.

Both these factors are implicated in the development and progression of

autoimmune disease. The key to health is keeping Th-1 and Th-2 cells in

harmonious balance.

Scientists in South Africa have found a way to naturally balance the

activity of these cells using a proprietary blend of plant sterols and

sterolins. Several double-blind, placebo controlled studies have shown that

sterols and sterolins in the correct ratio will keep Th-1 cells functioning

at their optimal level and keep Th-2 cells from over producing antibodies

and inflammatory agents such as Interleukin-6. Inflammation decreases, pain

subsides and damaged tissues begin to heal. As symptoms subside, many of

those with lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune disorders find

their joy of life returns as they can again take part in normal daily

activities.

......................this part of the article caught my

eye.......................

To date, no drug-drug interactions have been observed in patients using

Moducare®. It is advisable for patients to inform their clinicians of their

intention to use this supplement. It has to be understood that it does not

replace conventional medication, especially those used for life-threatening

diseases. Moducare® should be viewed as an adjunct to help shift the immune

responses to a more balanced status and to control chronic inflammation.

At present, patients having received solid organ or tissue transplants

should avoid the use of this immune modulator. This is based on the ability

of the sterols/sterolins in the current formulation to promote cellular

immune mechanisms, the same mechanisms being responsible for graft

rejection.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>I read things with a jaded eye sometimes. Remember I have a

transplant. It sounds like there are some cautionary alerts; that the

effect on people who want to suppress their immune systems is not understood

enough to encourage use of this drug. It's worth some discussion, remember I

am not the norm in this group, I want to suppress my immune system as much

as I can without being a host to the types of bacterias and viruses that

will kill me. But before the transplant I wanted to heal after the

flare-ups...

Interesting drug. I will be interested in hearing from some of you that

tried it.

I used Moducare for 6 months exactly as described in their information with

no change. I even bought the book that was written about it; the book

described a number of dietary changes which I had already successfully

implemented prior to starting Moducare.

I don't actually know of anyone else who has had any benefit from Moducare.

I think it's a waste of money. You're better off with things like vegetable

juicing.

meristoleate, acidophelus and sterols/sterolins since July and saw a difference

within 6

weeks.I have been able to drop my MTX from 10mg to 3.6 without seizing up and am

running just about normally.I was very upsey that after 3 years on assorted

versions of AP

that I was not improving ,it seemed that the more antibiotics I took the worse

things got.Several people advised me to lower the dosage and it did make an

improvement.This

stopped after a few months, figuring that I just might need a change my doc put

me on generic tetra, this is really helping also.Guess I have been lucky again.

Hi, I have taken Moducare for quite some time. It was a life saver for me

while undergoing chemotherapy for Lymphoma. The information on the web page

said that it would help bone marrow during chemo. It did that for me. It has

also helped my immune system stay strong enough to avoid the flu, colds, etc

when my family comes down with either. I stopped it for a while after the

chemo was finished, thinking that I did not need it any more, and caught

the first cold I had had in 4 years.

It does work for some.

Hi everyone. Quite a long time ago, the group was talking about Moducare for

boosting your immune system. Is this a good supplement to take for scleroderma?

Thanks.
