Intuitive Eating SupportI know I don't post a lot. But I read here everyday and love it. Everyone on here is amazing! Anyway I wanted to reply about the running. There is a program called Couch to 5k that is very good. It is great for new runners. There are podcasts too! Can someone fill me in on this Couch to 5k program? I've heard to mentioned in

Hi Agnieszka and welcome!

I have done the Couch to 5K program and have nothing but good things to say

about it.

Basically you start running very short intervals and build up your endurance

until you are running for ~30-45 min. with no rest breaks (it's been a while

since I did it so I can't remember the exact specifics). I downloaded MP3 files

that have music and a guy's voice telling you when to start running and when to

take a walk break, those were GREAT.

As for the comment that it's a schedule, I would say yes and no. There is a

" schedule " but you can certainly take it at your own pace and stretch out each

" week " longer than an actual week, adding in more rest days if that feels right

for your body. I certainly didn't complete the three run/ walk sessions each

week, if I needed extra days off, I would just do the next scheduled workout

when it fit for me.

But since you are new to exercise in general, may I suggest you start by

walking? Running can be very hard on the joints, especially for a heavier

person, and you will get all the same benefits without the wear and tear by

walking, and you can still do it outside, without the scrutiny that concerns you

about a gym. If walking seems too " easy " for you, try adding some hills to your

route or going faster. You will be amazed that it will get your heartrate up!

The website is great - may I ask where you found the MP3's with the

walking/running intervals you mentioned? Those would be very helpful.

And yes, I totally agree that it's not necessary to follow the " week " schedule

to the " t " ... I'll be starting at a different level of ability than someone

else, so I may need more time...

By the way, I'm not officially starting until after my baby is born in January.

In the meantime, I'm all into walking, well, more like waddling at this point

but it's still nice to do...

I've been walking for a while so I'm not totally new to exercise, just new to

running. And I realize it's going to a while before I actually run. Maybe by

next fall?? I'd like to be able to do the 5k by the time I turn 35 (next

September). It's a lot of time, but considering that I'll have a new baby, in

addition to my two preschoolers, and I'm at 300 lbs right now, maybe it's not

such a long long time after all... (it's amazing how much I've changed since

having children - this kind of planning would have driven me nuts b.c. (before

children)... having to WAIT to start something???? Having to give it a whole

lot of time??? Yiykes.

But, I see these changes as things I want to sustain for my whole life, not just

a brief window when I feel excited and then promptly move on to something brand

new and exciting...

Now, in the meantime, these next 10 weeks till my baby is due, I'm practicing

listening to my body for its desires for food. And there is one thing I want to

ask some of you with more experience:

how do you distinguish hunger that is genuine hunger versus cravings/desire for

certain flavours or textures...?? I know it's a bit different when I'm

pregnant, but still, I find that I eat more than I think I need... but I'm not

sure whether what I " think " I need is the same as " intuiting " what I need.

It breaks down running into bite-sized pieces so it doesn't feel so overwhelming

:) When I started jogging I could barely run for 30 seconds without being

winded, but the longer you do it, the easier it gets. Now I trail run regulary

and I find a good run can always make me feel empowered and give me a brighter

perspective on life :)

Sounds like you have a wonderful long-term plan to start enjoying running!

Here's the podcasts I used, by Ullrey. They're kind of techno/ trance

type music, not my favorite but the voice cues were so nice that I didn't mind

too much. And he's very encouraging!
