Your symptoms are mild - sometimes doctors advise patients to wait it out until menopause. Are you going to get a second opinion (or, like me, a third and fourth opinion :-)? Did he tell you why he recommends a hyst? If you do want to take action on the fibroids rather than wait, you should definitely research on myomectomies and something called Uterine Artery Embolization, which is designed to cut off the blood flow to the fibroids and shrink them. You're in the right place for lots of advice and support! What state/city are you in? Someone on this list might be able to recommend a good gyn near you. Guest guest Posted July 1, 2003 Report Share Posted July 1, 2003 Hi Kim, I'm scheduled to have a myo with Dr. Glassner Aug. 5th. After talking with him on the phone a couple of times, doing research and getting input from the list I feel very comfortable with my decision. I'd suggest doing a search on this board with Glassner as your search topic. Also, if you go into the database link in the left hand column it has a doctor director listing post numbers that mention docs and there are a number of posts that mention Dr. Glassner. Someone on the list (and I'm blanking on her name, sorry!) just had surgery with him maybe 2 weeks ago, and was extremely pleased with her results. She did a couple of posts on her experience that you should find if you search under Glassner. Good luck to you! G I'm thinking about having the fibroids removed and would appreciate any input on Dr. Glassner and anyone else in Pennsylvania who performs either myomectomies or UAE. Thanks. I am not TTC right now, am older than you, my fibroids are bigger than yours and no one has said that I won't be able to conceive or ordered an immediate surgery. Maybe the reason your doctor said stat is because you are TTC and he thinks you will have better success after the surgery. In fact, myo is the common treament for women whose fibroids are hindering pregnancy. Women definitely do conceive after myo. From what you have disclosed I see no reason you shouldn't have hope. Also, is your doctor an RE? If not it might be good to see one. In any case, I don't think it is a good idea to rush into surgery in panic mode. Even if you do CHOOSE to have surgery your current doc may not be the best person to do it. I think what you need right now is to slow down, get informed, and make your own decision about what to do. Carla Dionne's book is an excellent start if you haven't already read it. Guest guest Posted July 24, 2003 Report Share Posted July 24, 2003 As I understand it, you should be able to have children after a myomectomy, as this removes the fibroids and leaves the uterus. For this reason, I'm going with that option. (The type of myo selected will depend on the type, size and location of your fibroids and influenced by your surgeon's specialisms). It could be that a cesarean section is needed when delivering after a myomectomy, and I haven't yet discovered how often that's the case. Some women do have children despite having fibroids, but they can interfere with pregnancies. There'll be posts about that in the older messages. Some women have become pregnant after uterine arterial embolisation (UAE), but it's not the reccommended option for someone who wants to get pregnant in case the embolisation interferes with fertility. Guest guest Posted July 24, 2003 Report Share Posted July 24, 2003 Hi! i recently had a myo...my fibroid was bigger than yours and i had 2 cysts on each ovary as well as endometriosis. i was devastated when i found out that i had to have surgery. i thought i would never be able to have children. now, although i haven't tried to get pregnant as of yet (since the operation...it's been 2 months now). i saw my doctor yesterday and asked him how long i had to wait before i could start trying. he told me 2 more months. so, it will be a total of 4 months from the surgery. he told me that i shouldn't have any problems conceiving at all. i would not be able to have natural childbirth...rather a c section because my uterus has been reconstructed...a precaution. i had heard some horror stories about women post myo having to have hysterectomies immediately after a c section and he said that's not true. don't you worry, they'll take out the things you don't need and put everything you do need back in it's right place. ; ) i also asked about trying to conceive with fibroids. he told me that during pregnancy fibroids get bigger and can cause miscarriage and premature labor. my gyno prior to him suggested that i try and get pregnant to degenerate the fibroids? i was curious and asked him...he does not recommend it. daniela Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was told to " go ahead and try " to conceive with the fibroids (I had 3 large and 2 small) and I did conceive. But ultimately miscarried due to the fibroids enlarging so much that my uterus went to term size while I was only at 5 months. My RE said sometimes these fibroids don't cause problems but in my case they did. They can never predict. He sounds very optimistic about conceiving after having my myo. I had 2 fibroids removed in January, am not currently trying to conceive, but my doctor was very positive about my chances to conceive should I try. Please ask your doctor if he/she will have to make an incision all the way through the uterine wall to get the fibroids out. They may not actually know this before they go in, but it's worth asking. I found it helpful to know as much as possible before my surgery. Make sure you have an experienced surgeon, and that you trust this person to do right by you. Being scared and overwhelmed is very normal. I was scared right up to the time I went under for the surgery. Please try to be positive - it will help so much with preparing for surgery and for good healing afterwards. Many women have successful pregnancies after a myo and you can, too!! Stay well and positive (as much as possible!) and keep us posted!
