Guest guest
Hello all, I've had a crazy few months, and the last month or so has been especially hard, so I thought I'd share with all of you and see if you have any thoughts/suggestions to offer. The main stressor was going back and forth over my job -- to stay in the old one (where I had been laid off, and then hired back two months later) or leave and go to the new one (where I interviewed while laid off from the first one). Anyway, the situation was awful enough that I finally gave notice last week. Which rather broke my heart -- leaving all my amazing kiddos behind. But the decision is behind me and I am sure the new situation will be great. I never had doubt about that, it was just leaving the old that was hard. Anyway, so that's the background. In the foreground... I've been reading WWSHTB, and finished it, and started re-reading. And it was amazing and empowering... but somehow got me in a bad place, because I felt like whenever I craved a food (mouth hunger, if I understand the terminology correctly) I felt like I was supposed to eat it. And I felt totally out of control and uncomfortable, and kept saying things along the " who says... smaller is better? " but I just felt BAD. Yesterday I decided to go back to McKenna, which means I can eat anything I want, whenever I want, as long as I was hungry. And felt worlds better as soon as I made that decision. And I even allow myself the out that I can also eat when I am not hungry if i feel like i am REALLY craving/needing something. So does this mean I am falling back into dieting? Is it bad that I made that decision? I felt like I needed that structure. But the structure is still based on me -- MY hunger. But it doesn't feel like dieting to me, because I can still eat whatever I want. I know I dont need permission from any of you to eat however i want but I'd love any input you care to offer... Guest guest
Hi Abby, Sounds like you have had lots on your 'plate'!! I'm sure now that you have made a decision, your life will settle down more. As I understand it, what these authors mean by 'mouth' hunger is what I think of as taste hunger. Not really internal body hunger, but something that appeals to you in other ways. The challenging part is to find what is really driving this urge. I find this tough to do because it does present itself as a 'taste' which =s food to me. What I remember reading is to see if you can back track a bit and find what you were doing just before the urge hit. That is supposed to help give you a clue as to what, other than eating, is welling up for you. BEST wishes!! Isn't it when we are legalizing a food that we may need to give ourselves permission to eat 'it' anyway, but with awareness, because to NOT eat it could trigger a deprivation/rebellion reaction? If you are feeling better when you eat only for real body hunger, I can't see one thing wrong with that. I know that when I feel such a guideline is a 'rule' - set in stone (ha ha), that I rebel and its more like diet mentality than IE then. It seems so easy to just have 'rules'! But I'm more and more finding that this body of mine is not a bit of clockwork that requires X every Y hours. It really wants variety and some days this and some days more other days less etc. Could it be that this type of flexibility makes you uneasy? Just some random thougths. Guest guest
Hi Abby, I’m new here. What’s WWSHTB? And what did McKenna write? I ordered Intuitive Eating off Amazon yesterday. Are these other books you’re talking about? For now I’m reading posts and trying to catch up on everyone/everything. Thanks! Guest guest
Jolene, WWSHTB is When Women Stop Hating Their Bodies. Its a great title but rather a bother to type out so most of us have come to use the letters only. I also would like to tell you that there is a Book List in the Files section (left/pink column) at the group site. There you will find titles, authors and even reviews by members here. Many people have printed this list and found copies at local libraries which is faster and cheaper than buying. And if you are one who likes to highlight or underline important passages, consider taking notes instead. I find that the writing re-enforces my memory and when I want to go back over what I read, the notes make that a quicker re-read too. Good job back reading some of the posts - bet you got some answers to questions you hadn't even formed yet - lol!! Best to you, Katcha IEing since March 2007 > > Hi Abby, > > I'm new here.
